Juventus, as well as Real Madrid and Barcelona, are still backing the concept that lived a brief, doomed existence in April last year.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus have been condemned by the president of Uefa for plotting to resurrect the Super League “in the middle of a war”.

Aleksander Ceferin was scathing about plans by the rebel clubs, who he also accused of having deliberately “launched their nonsense of an idea in the middle of a pandemic”.

Speaking via video link at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit in London, at which Juventus president Andrea Agnelli was expected to lay out plans for a new breakaway, Ceferin said: “I’m sick and tired of speaking of this non-football project.

“Look, first they launched their nonsense of an idea in the middle of a pandemic; now we’re reading articles every day that they are planning to launch another idea now in the middle of a war.

Do I have to speak more about those people? They obviously live in a parallel world.


And while we are saving players together with other stakeholders, while we are working to help in a terrible situation, they work on a project like that.”

Former European Club Association (ECA) chairman Agnelli, who Ceferin branded “a snake” when the Super League was launched last year, was sitting in the front row of the summit while the Uefa president was speaking.

Addressing the man to whom he was once so close that he became godfather to the Italian’s daughter, Ceferin said: “I have quotes where he was praising the system a week before they launched the first Super League.”

Speaking at the same conference, the head of La Liga, Javier Tebas, also said of the rebels: “They lie more than [Vladimir] Putin.”

Ceferin rejected comparisons between the Super League and Uefa’s own Champions League reforms, which included awarding two places to Europe’s biggest clubs based on their historic record.

Appearing to suggest that element could be scrapped at a meeting on Thursday, he added: “I think, today, there’s a meeting of the working group between the ECA and Uefa and it will be more places for smaller and mainly, to be honest, mid-size leagues.”

Ceferin also declared Fifa’s plan for a biennial World Cup now “off the table” and talked up an alternative plan that would see European nations play South American countries competitively more often.

“Now we are discussing also with Fifa how do we do it? Do we do it together? Probably, yes. But, for now, it’s too early to share it publicly.”

The two governing bodies had previously held talks over launching a Global Nations League.

On the Ukraine invasion, Ceferin said it was “impossible to say” what it would take for the ban on Russian teams playing internationally to be lifted.

He added: “We’re all just hoping and praying that the war stops. This madness should stop as soon as possible.”

Asked who would replace Russia at this summer’s Women’s European Championship in England, he replied: “Probably – as I spoke with our director of competitions – we’ll have a draw who enters between the teams who are close to qualifying.”

That opened the door to them being replaced by Ukraine, who lost to Northern Ireland in the play-offs.
