I recall their male counterpart winning some big matches, even beating the US pre-Olympics, got all the support and hype, only to get to the tourney proper and flop big time...same was the hype around the Super Eagles; we know how it all ended.

No one should place unrealistic expections on these super ladies...let them and the fans alike take it game by game.

I hope and pray they claw and bite their way to the Quater Finals at the very least....then from there we see how far we can go.

Why is it that Nigerian sports athletes are such local champions though? Conquering Africa doesn't have to be the be-all and end-all na. Mediocrity is a disease out here, from the political/elite class down to the poorest commoner

When it comes to sports so many factors contribute to our dismal performances on the global stage as Africans...in my opinion, they are but not restricted to the f/f:
1. Grassroot discovery and development of raw talents by the authorities is close to non existence on the continent.
2. Corruption: Connections and the financial muscle to buy your way to selection ensures that the best brains, legs and hands aren't selected.
3. And due to no 1 and 2, by the time these real talents crawl their ways to the peak, they are already getting old and their glory days already leaving them...
*they falsify age...
*do well at age grade levels...excel against much younger opponents globally.
*at the senior level, they are able to compete excellently against Africans who grew up in the same system.
* on the world stage, and at the senior level, you now get to see Africans who are mostly in their early to mid 30s competing against guys and ladies in their early to mid 20s...my brother, what do you expect?
