Miracle indeed. That Nigerian team was full of grandfathers pretending to be teenagers. That was one of the reasons Nigeria was once suspended from participating in age grade competitions.

The Miracle of Dammam

February 25th, 1989.

This was a quarter-final match between Nigerian and the Soviet Union at the 1989 FIFA Under 20 World Championship in Saudi Arabia. The Soviet Union was leading 4-0 in the 60th minute when Nigeria began its fight back. A pair of freekick goals by Christopher Ohenhen (61st and 75th minutes) and goals by Samuel Elijah (83rd minute) and captain Nduka Ugbade (84th minute) made the scores 4-4 at full time. Dimeji Lawal missed a chance to give Nigeria victory before full time. It went to penalties and Samuel Elijah defeated the Prophets of Baal to score the winning freekick for Nigeria.

Oleg Salenko, who scored one of the goals for the Soviet Union, scored a record 5 goals for Russia in the 6-1 victory over Cameroon in the 1994 FIFA World Cup.


The NTA did not show the matches live because they were played in the middle of the afternoon (Nigerian time). The whole country was hooked on Radio Nigeria for commentaries of the matches. However, NTA showed the matches later at night at 10pm.

It was when Luis Figo of Portugal beat us 2-0 in the finals,Raskimono released that song.

Even FIFA U 20 1985,THAT we won,NTA aired it.

NTA showed it at 10pm in the night. The commentator that talked about the bible was the great Ernest Okonkwo on Radio Nigeria. He spoke about Prophet Elijah and the Prophets of Baal (Samuel Elijah scored our last penalty, that's why he brought it up). Radio Nigeria broadcast it live, but NTA broadcast it at 10 o'clock in the night (I posted a clip of the NTA's coverage).

I felt really sorry for Akinloye Oyebanji after the final of Canada '87. The man's eyes were red when they went back to the studio after Nigeria lost. He looked like he had been crying.

This was one of the funniest things that I remember about Saudi '89. We were going from Glover Road, Ikoyi towards Obalende when Nigeria scored a goal. We got to Kingsway Road and the traffic warden stopped us right in the middle of the road. "Who scored? What's the scores"? he shouted. We told him that Nigeria had scored and Nigeria was leading and the man started dancing right in the middle of the road.

When Samuel Elijah came up to play the last penalty and as I listened attentively on the radio with silent prayer said and heartbeat raised to power ten. Elijah, the ball and the Russian keeper were all set. Lanipekun now said “Samuel Elijah, Man of God, what can he do”. Samuel indeed scored and Nigeria won. Those were days of pure Glory.
May his soul Rest In Peace. Amen.

He appeared on TV and presented a few shows, but by that time he was already in a senior position, so he didn't appear as frequently as Modele or Akinloye (he was their boss). He was already head of sports at NTA by that time.

I was a teenager in the '90s and NTA was still using it even well into the 2000s.
