South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday his country had been asked to mediate in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and that he had told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a phone call it should be settled through negotiations.

Ramaphosa did not say who had made the request or give more details on how he planned to work with the two sides.

SA approached to play a mediation role

"Based on our relations with the Russian Federation and as a member of BRICS, South Africa has been approached to play a mediation role," Ramaphosa said, referring to the emerging market group of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

There were no immediate announcements from Moscow or Kyiv confirming South Africa's role.

Talks between Ukraine and Russia's foreign ministers on Thursday failed to bring any respite in the conflict as hundreds of thousands of civilians remained trapped in Ukrainian cities sheltering from Russian air raids and shelling.

SA's strong ties with Russia

South Africa's ruling African National Congress has strong historical ties to the former Soviet Union, which provided training and support to anti-apartheid activists during the Cold War era.

South Africa has also tended to punch above its weight diplomatically since its relatively peaceful transition to democracy in 1994.

Ramaphosa said in a statement on his LinkedIn page he had talked with Putin by phone.

"I outlined our position on the conflict ... as well as our belief that the conflict should be resolved through mediation and negotiation between the parties and - if need be - with the help of agencies that can help," Ramaphosa said.

How this crisis would turn out, without negotiations and mediation

The West would not want to back out and appear to have lost to Russia, as this conflict cannot be sustained for long, it would affect the world economically or militarily especially now China is issuing warnings. Expect North Korea, India and co to issue its own warnings to their enemies. Which might trigger a 3rd world war which no one wants (especially the west).

The only solution for the west might be to murder Zelensky to end this crisis, (the guy is hell bent on fighting and causing a 3rd world war, remember Biden tried airlifting him out of Ukraine) and definitely pin the murder on Putin. Another leader would emerge and tow the line of reason and peace.

Winners would be

The west - succeeded in delaying Russia's economic development for a while. Also tarnished to an extent Russia's international reputation.

Russia - succeeded in letting the US and NATO know that their expansion would never be tolerated anymore close to it's borders.
Succeeded in exposing the hypocrisy of the west and how they almost dominate every facet of our lives. Which would lead to...
More nations would see the need not to develop their own tech and not rely too much on the west.

Rest of the world - the world would be a bipolar or multi polar world with many powerful players. Which would ensure more checks and balances in the international system and ensure to an extent peace and stability.
