ASUU Has No Power To Dictate How Much To Fund Universities Or Payroll System by Nfora: 3:06pm On Mar 14, 2022 |
It is high time sane members of the academia and the Nigerian community call ASUU to order, before they co-destroy Nigeria's university system. Yes,Nigerian universities and lecturers deserve better deal, but it is never the mandate of ASUU to dictate to government how much to be given out before they go back to the class room. Let ASSU tell us they are going on strike because they deserve better welfare and working environment plus well funded university system with all required infrastructure. This is 100% legitimate. But it is quite mischievous for ASUU to demand from government ,specified amount of monies(circaN1trillion) for the funding of universities. I also find it very ridiculous and annoying for an academic staff union to dictate to their employer, the type of payroll system to deploy. Has any body cared to dissect why ASUU had been going on strike for almost a century? The reason is simple:Lack of focus and stupid agreements signed under duress. ASUU should focus on their core mandate which is staff welfare and conducive working environment. ASUU can go on strike for better salaries and allowances and lack of infrastructure and good working and learning environment. But I find it very stupid and annoying when ASUU dictate the type of payroll system to be adopted and specific amounts to be provided by govt, before they go back to the classrooms. ASUU should focus on their legitimate mandate and stop forcing government to sign stupid agreements under duress and expect the latter to honour same! A sane person should realise that it is easier for government to honour an agreement that says fund universities well and pay us certain specified amounts as salaries and allowances, than the one that says provide us with a specified amount to fund universities .Employees dictating to employer, how much to fund the organisation!!! When you give government so much to chew by mixing your core mandate with others, how do you expect positive results. Only a stupid government will not sign any stupid agreement under duress, just to ensure students go back to school, after a long period of strike. Moreover agreements are not cast in Stone, they are renegotiable. ASUU should go back to the renegotiation table as offered by government, for a much more SANE agreement. They should also learn to use strike with sense. Protest should be distinguished from strike action. Frequent strikes does not hurt the government, it hurts only the university system! 1 Like |

you might be right but what you are doing right now is why people don't fight for each other, if they are just fighting for there own pocket and don't put the student into consideration who will fight for the student welfare. 2 Likes |

yuping: Please read my article again. I pray God gives you the power of understanding. Well let me help you summarise: ASUU should demand for better university infrastructure and good learning and working environment,in addition to better salaries and allowances, earned and unearned. Does that not cover the interest of others, including students? BUT WHY SHOULD ASUU DICTATE THAT CERTAIN SPECIFIC AMOUNTS MUST BE RELEASED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CERTAIN VERY STUPID AGREEMENTS OR CERTAIN PAyROLLL SYSTEM MUST BE USED? |

My major concern is the masses who've refused to receive sense. When it's time for election, we allow these politicians to let us vote based on ethnic and religious grounds, some even sell their votes with no sight of the big picture. It's high time people realise that these politicians don't care about you They deceive and divide you based on religious and ethnic grounds, but they Unite at the top to milk the country dry Now that there's fuel scarcity , you won't see specific fuel stations for APC or PDP supporters, neither would they give you fuel because you're a Christian or a Muslim . Whether you vote good or bad leaders, na everybody go hear am ASUU Strike all their children are abroad getting quality education , you that voted based on ethnoreligious ground is at home, no special school for you that's Christian, Muslim, APC or PDP supporter Una must receive sense by Force 1 Like |

Dumb OP, if ASUU cannot dictate to the government, why did the Government present themselves for Negotiations and an Agreement?? ASUU is not dictating for the government, rather, the government has failed to honor an agreement they both had for YEARS. Police dey go on strike, another failed agreement. Doctors strike, failed agreement, DISCO’s underfunded. Even court don strike for lack of implementation of a federal law. But you’re too blind and sentimental to see that theirs a problem with the government. If na to lie about moving 1million ghosts from poverty, they know where to channel the country’s resources except the issues that really needs funding. |

Nfora:The only thing you failed to understand is that ASUU did not dictate any amount to the FG, it was the committee set up during GEJ regime that came up with the amount in question! Which GEJ FG agreed to be paying yearly, because the amount was much. GEJ FG only paid for one year and stopped! |

KaluwisxPRO: A dump person is the one that does not know that the so called agreement dates back to 2009! Stupidity and insanity is when you do the same thing and expect different result. I have tried to prove the reasons why a 13year old agreement has not been and can never be honoured by successive and current governments, without renegotiation. |

Nfora: Olodo, how many times has this government sat with ASUU since 7years?? None If they have, what was their agreement? If none, then that is even worst. You see how stupid you’ve made yourself. Perhaps you didn’t learn shit going by your grammar and lack of critical thinking. Ask FG to sack those lecturers if they cannot meet their demand. All Universities should be privatized and not subsidize let’s see if Northerns can go close to the four walls of any University in the country. |

Nfora:But there was re-negotiation with this same set of FG team and an MOA was arrived at on May of 2020 (or there about), it was only left for the FG to implement, only for the very same FG trying to change the goal post at the middle of the match now! |

Nfora:Good points. It's crazy ASUU is holding the system to a standstill over a method that they want to be paid (other things included i know) . |

sinkhole:The FG have their hands full of the mess we're in, no denying that. But the op spoke about both parties renegotiating under duress . |

SirWarlock:Hmmmm, that is funny! Under duress in 2009 and still under duress in 2020, two different FG regimes o and they are justing waking up now |
