A Muslim man and his wife are not observing the fast during Ramadan due to a reason, not because they intentionally don't want to, can they get intimate to the extent of sleeping together (having intercourse) during the day?

and i understand the woman's reason might be 'she's in her period, but isn't it haram to have intercourse with your wife while she's in her period?
