(CNN)Four little words — "do your own research" — " It may seem like a reasonable, even positive, attitude, and it is a favored talking point echoed by many in the right-wing media.
Renee DiResta, research manager at the Stanford Internet Observatory, said on "Reliable Sources." The notion of doing your own research is not a bad idea in itself, DiResta said, as it's important to maintain a healthy level of skepticism about information being fed to you. But in today's media environment fueled by clicks and engagement, it's all too easy to come across misleading data that confirms biases.

You Must Not ‘Do Your Own Research’ When It Comes To Science - Forbes
When laypersons espouse opinions on those matters, it’s immediately clear to us where the gaps in their understanding are and where they’ve misled themselves in their reasoning. When they take up the arguments of a contrarian scientist, we recognize what they’re overlooking, misinterpreting, or omitting. Unless we start valuing the actual expertise that legitimate experts have spent lifetimes developing, “doing our own research” could lead to immeasurable, unnecessary suffering.

In a nutshell, don't use your brain or put your trust in your instincts. When you think, your brain hurts; leave the thinking to the experts.
And discovering that experts are lying when you conduct your own research is not a good look.
Believe what you're told, sheep!

Quite true.
DYOR is used especially by crooked influencers to promote scams in Crypto.

You'll see them plainly advertising rugpulls that they know are scams while screaming DYOR

Doing one's own research depends on a number of factors, including information relevance, resource availability, time, expertise, etc.

In Nigeria where people are struggling to maintain the good old tradition of eating 3-square meals every day, doing one's own research is the least of our litany of worries.

As a result, we will always depend on the mainstream information sources to form our opinions in this part of the world because we have a bigger problem, hunger, staring us in the face.

Here's another way of looking at it.
If a known liar, tells you "DO NOT DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH", you'd instinctively want to do your own research, wouldn't you?
You owe it to yourself to do due diligence.
Research would entail asking someone else or seeking a second opinion? It doesn't have to be googling stuff up.

I am not surprised. The ignorant masses is the key to the media’s longtime supremacy when it comes to information.

Nonetheless, we should still try. Otherwise, greater problems may arise from trusting wrong information.

Most people usually listen to one side of the story and move on. This is where false impressions usually emanate from.
