The issue is people that has never pass through school or training of likes will wake up and claim to be building engineers, secondly most of this buildings are built by developers who are only after their profits and are ready to build in few weeks with substandard materials that will only last their time of contract to control the building then after 5yrs or less you see ground zero and developer don cash out not considering the casualties of collapse. Thirdly Nigeria bribe syndrome will not allow government officials to investigate properly the standard of the materials and capacity of the so called engineers.

Who are we to blame here.

The cement company whose cement were used to build the building?

The civil engineer contracted to set the building?

The Architect contracted to draw the building plan?

Too many weight lifters with enormous weight above average( hard body Niggas) living in said building?

Buhari?

Poor contruction of such building is the may reason it collapsed.
Not entirely true.
That area is old land and most of those buildings existed precolonial time.
What often happens is that they have been 'renovated' time and again over the years without due consideration to what happens beneath the surface of the ground. Close to the lagoon and with high water table foundation failures are bound when salt dances with concrete over a long period of time.

In the coming years more buildings are likely to come down all over Lagos Island and its shorelines as the 'sell by date' of their foundations arrive no matter what cosmetics are done to their facades.

What government should do should is to float a PPP Engineering outfit that specializes in foundation works and can offer shoring, underpinning and short piling services at a discount to landlords in these foreshore areas particularly for older buildings some of which have significant historical or archaeological value.

Ask yourself, how many buildings have collapsed in other parts of the country in the past 2 years?

Na only Lagos?

Aren't people constructing in other parts of the country?

Lagos needs extensive soil tests and classification into zones, with a strict code for foundation construction in each zone.

The proem is peculiar to Lagos for a reason. That reason must be stamped out.
the quickest way to loose a job is to mention soil test or structural design to a client. clients can be very daft, if you doubt me go through comments on property section. they hate following due process, they dont mind using a stacked illiterate as long as it gets them a good deal at the expense of quality

Wrong. This isn't the reason for the rampant collapse of buildings in Lagos.

In the late 1980s and early 90s ( Babangida's regime), some illiterate Yoruba developers swooped on various locations in Lagos eg Yaba, Lagos Island and convinced the landlords to allow them demolish their Brazilian styled Bungalows and build multi-storey apartment buildings with shops on the ground floor in exchange for agreed number of years rent to recoup invested funds while the land owners retain an apartment.

These developers built these shoddy buildings all around the state and got away with it due to the administrative rot ushered in by the Babangida administration ( Buhari's administration would never have tolerated this). They made their money back and disappeared, leaving those shoddy buildings all over the place.

Back then as a kid in Lagos Island, I knew those buildings weren't going to last and I'm not surprised they're collapsing every rainy season. They will keep collapsing and taking lives till an administration is bold enough to demolish every single one of them.

A possible solution is the govt arrange the same sort of joint venture with those same families but this time, building well designed apartments that will stand the test of time.

Those of you saying the buildings were old as an excuse for collapse dont really know whatsup in that area.

Make i yarn you as a bonafide ebute-metta breed, dating back to july 18th 2006, about the first building collapse i know of on Bola by Ibadan street, i can confidently tell you that subseqent collapse structures were built between 2004 to 2022. Those are structures under 20yrs. Will you say they are old?

This particular building, i gues it was constructed around 2004- or 2005. I am not too sure. I only know that the landlord of my mums shop was residing in the bungalow that was on the land before it was redevelop.

Those structures are extremely design and constructed to fail. I remember my dad once told me that all this building will start coming down max 15yrs because of the extremely poor mode of construction, substandard materials and low technical know-how, and yes, the old man was damn right.

That year, those developers were kings,. They owe suppliers, workers and also intending tenants. They collect money from different people for a flat and yet none of them will still get the flat. They will use their money to develop the house, increase rent far more than the agreed rent, and those people will have to forfeit their cash or wait till eternity to get refund.

Landlords of those years, gave their old solid buildings to developers to manage which the will be demolish and 3- storey building of extremely failed structure to be manage by him as agreed for 15years or more will be constructed. By then, thats if the structure lives to see 15yrs, the structure is already dilapidated or collapsed. The developer smiled to bank while landlord cry and continue crying after those years.

The face-me and slap you i grew up in was given to developer in 2014 and i can tell u the building is already a shadow of itself. Another structure intending to collapse is on Oloto by Herbert macaulay. Mehn, i was shocked one day when i saw them fixing column to brace the dead building. This same oloto street, about 2 buildings have already gone down.

Untill when we the citizen get rid of our grid, we cannot move forward.

You're welcome. I witnessed this as a kid. My family house wasn't spared too. It was the rave of the moment and landlords were excited about this developments.

One moment, peaceful environment with Brazilian bungalows where families come out to receive the cool breeze and watch kids play in the evening.............. Next moment, crowd influx from everywhere shops and crowded markets choking out the initial residents.

Most of the crowd, market women, thugs and traders you see there aren't indigenes, they migrated there.

i have one now currently doing the construction himself without any structural design. i got to site to see things and met on old baba that couldn't even decipher a simple English with tribal marks all over his face. imagine doing a design with 0.9m cantilever without a professional on site. thank God i didn't add my company name on that design.

If LASG is not super-strict, with some crazy legislation on this matter, this is how buildings will keep collapsing in Lagos and people will keep dying
