Hi friends,

I'm starting a mini digital marketing company. I was worried about few things regarding the listed issues below. The office, I'm setting up is kind of like digital marketing company but i'm focusing on many different niche just to keep the revenue coming although i have my main platform which i focus on while diversifying into different niche to increase incoming.

I was planning to pay 60k to 100k per month for each workers, 8 to 9am to 5 to 6pm monthly which i am planning to employ mainly 4 to 5 at a start and expand, if things looks good aftermatch.

Worker's are to:
1. One will be a graphic designer for our social media platform, and many others may involve which also related to his/her main work etc...

2. Three workers will focus on writing content, doing research, business opportunities and to increase the user's engagement, including traveling interstate and also an affiliate summit abroad for recognition (The pay will be better than the rest and increasing every 6 months interval as along the company grow, same for the rest worker's too.) Please remember I'm on a Zero level here. They will have no idea of the abroad recognition but only interstate as things might go north, which I rejected.

3. The last will see to customer support, users care, handling issues, and daily report to me.

4. My job is to see to the development of everything we might be handling, making sure no issues and the software programming.


My friend's input was the money to be paid is too much for that kind of works.


P.S: I know many people's here are experienced, please your guildline is needed, thanks.

I need advice on the listed points below because I have no experience regarding it.

My List

1. Salary is not fixed, might increase but it will never reduce from the intial agreed terms.
2. How to get Workers from the same field in the same region and how to go about interviewing them, to know, if you are up for the work, even if you are less experienced but ready to learn.
2i. Which of this will be more effective? placing an ads on Facebook or Nairaland for workers?
3. Making the environment lively without disrespecting but focus. (I'm currently 32 but crazily young like 18 yrs old )
4. Who clean the office?
5. Who handle day to day opening/closing of the office, as I might always come late to work.
6. How should i behave at work? I love to be cheerful, encouraging, pulling the goodies out of people but at the other hand, I don't want that to be taking for granted.
7. Do I need a lawyer?

I think you should research the current pay scale for the various existing job positions in companies offering the same services as you.

Also, I'm sure you've drawn up a business plan to project possible revenues on a bad quarter and possible revenues on a very good quarter.

If you can't presently afford the services of a cleaner, you can throw in a little something after discussion with your customer care person to clean the general area, while the other staff clean up their personal space.


About how you should behave, just be kind... Set up a reward system for good work (not favouritism) - try to understand why a person may be failing in their duties via a conversation rather than a confrontation. Don't laugh around in trivia talks within the office... But you can be jovial in discussing clients briefs and all that... Allow them space and opportunity to bring their best to the office... Don't try to overly micromanage.

Point 1:
Definitely, I'm making arrangements and planning for the good and bad season for effective working environment. This is my third year handling the whole work, so it's time for expansion at my capability and giving back to the community/Nigeria.

Point 2:
Regarding a cleaner service, I might be able to afford this but the time might be at stake. Is there any recommend time? I'd go with the option 2, if this is hard to handle.

You can run ads on Facebook - very targeted ads sha (You already know this sef as the Digital Marketing Guy ) - I'll advise you also throw your net open on nairaland threads - Career and Job sections (No need to pay for ads (seun no vex o lol) - but a thread will sort of create a community where you can just hold some mock personality assessment (possibly even look thru the profile and past comments to know the kind of person each applicant is - not the pretend we all do during interviews)

You can then reach out to people who you can then discuss their portfolios (everyone lies on CV).


For graphics designers you can search for NAIJA GRAPHICS DESIGNERS on facebook and contact anyone whose posts about their works catch your fancy.. Or even post the ad description and plead with the admin to approve.


About interviewing processes

First of all, your job description before and during interview should be very honest and straight to the point - I've come across some with too many fancy English hat can be seen first hand as copy and paste from foreign companies.... Envision all the responsibilities for each position in clear terms -

But how you should access a candidate... I'm not sure sha.. But don't hire anyone who thinks THEY'RE TOO GOOD for your business.

You can give one of the cleaners a spare office key as they are usually the first to get there.

If he can’t pay a cleaner, he should cut cost and employ one. How can you be advising him to have his staff clean the office? Like you expected me to leave my house, get to the office and start sweeping and dusting everything before I start the days job proper??

You should use cleaners from a company. That is what most banks use. If anything goes south, you can hold the cleaning company responsible. It maybe more expensive, but you’d have peace of mind. Alternatively, you can employ someone you can vouch for.

For the key, cleaners are usually the first people to get to the offfice. They are suppose to clean up before the start of office hours.

If you have millions of Naira worth of properties, you should get them insured.

I run a digital marketing agency, and I have more than 7 years of experience in digital marketing, web/graphic design, online ads, SEO, PPC, etc. Fast growth has been a bit of a challenge.
