(a + b) (a + b +c) = a(a + b + c) + b(a + b + c)
= a² + ab + ac + ab + b² + bc
= a² + 2ab + ac+ bc + b²

Considering the following Algebraic Laws of Real Numbers
Closure: a + b and ab are real numbers
Commutative: a + b = b + a, ab = ba
Associative: (a+b) + c = a + (b+c), (ab)c = a(bc)
Distributive: (a+b)c = ac+bc

(a+b) (a+b+c) will therefore be
a(a+b+c) +b(a+b+c)
a^2 + ab + ac + ab + b^2 + bc
a^2 + b^2 + ab + ab + ac + bc
a^2 + b^2 + 2ab + ac + bc
