No fewer than 120 students may have been expelled by the authorities of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, for what has been described as “wilful disobedience and insubordination” on the part of the students. Sunday Sun sources informed that already 66 of them have been served letters of dismissal. The affected students, however, say it is victimization and nothing more. In an interview with Sunday Sun, a father of one of the affected students, who was visibly miffed by the action of the school authorities, threatened legal action. According to him, his son, Akwa Bassey, a third year student of Accounting in the university was expelled along with more than a hundred others for coming to the assembly hall without their bibles. Mr Bassey said the action was rather hasty for an inordinately expensive institution where parents pay several millions of Naira for their children’s education. Sunday Sun investigation revealed that the Accounting student had gone for early morning fitness exercise shortly before the general assembly on that day. By the time he got back to his hostel, his roommate had locked the door to their room. So he couldn’t take his bible to the general assembly. When students were asked to raise their bibles at the gathering, some obviously did not come with theirs. The defaulting students were reportedly ordered out from the assembly and summarily expelled. “They were not even suspended for some days or reprimanded verbally but were dismissed just like that. It is unheard of and simply inhuman,” Mr. Bassey fumed. But responding to Sunday Sun enquiry, the institution’s corporate/ public affairs officer, Mr Egban Emmanuel Kalu, denied knowledge of the expulsion of the students. “I am not aware of any such dismissal in the school,” he said in a telephone conversation. He, however, promised to get back to the newspaper an hour later, saying he wanted to get confirmation and because he was driving at the time. But he never did. Much later and several calls after, Mr Egban still refused to pick his call even though his cell phone rang incessantly about 7pm. However, Sunday Sun learnt that a meeting had been hastily convened at press time by the university to bar any person or official of the school from speaking with the press on the matter.

@ ryhmz, liberal minded people know that what all you have said is true. I see no need trying to convince one whose mind has been made up. The problem with the generality of Nigerians is that we let religion becloud our sense of reasoning. Nigeria is one of the most religious Nation in the world yet we suffer as if God never exists in our Country.

It is not called a private University so that can have their own rules different from what others are doing, my dear.
It is private because the funding and management of the schools are in the hands of private individuals and organization. Of course they are allowed to make laws in their school but with stipulated guidlines from NUC. Convenant to the best of my knowledge is not a convent or a nun, so why the heavy emphasis on religious doctrines It would have been a very different case if they had registered as a theology University or some ascetic academy so everyone knows that is what is expected when you go there. Not decieve people into believing you that you run a University only for you to start slipping in strict religious doctrines on everyone without respecting anyone's private beliefs or right to believe in what they want. There are church run Universities abroad they don't make their church doctrines binding on anyone neither are their VCs or Deans neccessarily pastors, evangelists and the likes, convenant is no theology school so why run it like one and make adult students miserable. Do you know how that hinders effectiveness in thought progress and social skills? Come on!

At the end of the day it is privately owned. What makes this difficult to accept. If they charge 1 billion naira and ask students to wear uniforms whose rights do they breach. Which laws do they break exactly. I don't like that product, I don't feel its worth the cost so it should not exist. C'mon, there's something else. Speak.

I have very little regards for religion but I have very high regards for rules. And am not hypocritical about things. Nigerians have very scant regards for rules from the top to the bottom in every phase of life. If those students has the rules in black and white and signed up for them at matric. Then they have no case. There is no organisation that does not have rules and standards and most are not open to debate. Continue to wear danshiki to work at the bank and eventually you will be treated like a child. There are organisations that sack for smoking, eating out of place and not wearing seat belts when driving through the gates. The unions are aware of this and sign up to it. As you criticize there are many parents who are all too glad to have their wards obey someone or something for once in their life. It is afterall a choice.

rhymz: I am so surprise that most of these church run schools did not make the list.
Apart from the fact that many of the schools did not meet the NUC's operational requirements, the way these schools are run leave a lot to be concern about. Schools like Convenant and Redeemer Universities should have been on the list, their owners probably have NUC officials as members, little wonder they did not show on the list.
Nigerian private Universities are a joke and a mockery of what a good religious run University should be. Schools where very unqualified people hold the post of VC all because they own the school, they arbitrarily choose pastors and evangelists to head sensitive positions in the school management. People who hitherto have had no prior experience in running a University are allowed to make very humanly demeaning rules fashioned by their intolerant religious sense of right and wrong; little wonder you go to such schools and all you hear is how the management busies themselves with laws that add little or no progress to the academic development of such schools. Imagine after paying truckloads of cash to educate your kid only for one to hear that s/he had been rusticated from school cos he did not attend the assemble with his bible, imagine making christian religious study a major course for a person studying medicine, engineering, law, and other sciences. If you fail this religious course, you are forced to write them or else you will not graduate. In convenant you are not even allowed to wear a jersey, own a camera phone, have independent academic thoughts or even disagree intellectually with the authorities, yet it is a University. Is there any difference between these so-called church run Universities and rehabilitation centres? Are the students there being taught what they came there to know or what the school Church authorities want them to know. Why should a muslim student be forced to observe prayers different from his own or even study christian religious studies as a major even when his program should have no bearing on such study. Are the NUC aware of this arbitrariness in the way these church gangstars operate?? As if the mass indoctrinations in their churches are not enough they have to still drag it to the school? We want investment in our education but not these ones abeg!! Gone are the days when churches make claims of running any business outside the church as a way to help the poor; that argument has become stale and redundant, they are all profit driven with little or no quality education as they like to claim. Having beautiful buildings inside an enclosed landmass space does not transcend to quality education.
NUC should also take that aspect seriously, there is too much arbitrariness in the way these bible wielding conmen run these schools and put a price tag on education.

Not surprised at comments like these. Same thing was used when LAMIDO SANUSI was being defended by some over his actions in the Banking sector. A prominent northern spokesman say that their grouse was that southerners and especially "Christians" dominated the ownership of Banks, and that they were out to reverse the trend. they further went head that, the best they way should do is to Nationalize these Private Banks, built by individual sweat and put in their stooges to Head and buy up this investments. Others added that a Bank that can further Islamic interests is the answer. So they tried to introduce SHARIA COMPLIANT BANKs with government money. this type of sentiments was what necessitated the take over of Schools built by the sweat, blood and labour Missionaries years back. The Result, a steady decline in the quality of Education.

But using your own arguments and grouse against these Establishments as being set up to further christian views. This is the very reason BOKO Haramites are slicing the throats of "christian infidels" in the North. same reason why Northeners are apprehensive of western Education. Its root are actually Christian in Nature. Most of the Schools in Nigeria's Pre independence history were actually missionary built. However the missionaries did not close their doors to those willing to have an education in their domains.
Try and do a search, the first 150 Universities in the Western world were actually Christian theological institutions.. that includes the likes of Harvard, oxford etc. And i can confirm to you that any muslim Man of notable Ranking in this country has had missionaries contribute to their Enlightenement one way or another.

In the Far Northern Part of the Country where i grew up, Islamic religious Knowledge was forced on us when i was in primary school. And by Schools I mean Govt owned Schools. If it happens to be a Sharia compliant school, it is not even a question. You saw it before you opted for it.
Thoughts like yours is what stifles the spirit of free enterprise and liberty. Some of the Best intitutions of these country are owned by the Catholics. And when they do these things they give it all it takes, and that includes their vows, sacrifice, discipline, heart and sometimes their entire lifetime/Life. The Government owned institution are there who do not demand such discipline and sacrifice, why dont you focus your attention there or else get something of your taste that can be as good or better. To build Great institutions is not by empty talk, (Ask most Governments why they are not able to do things right). Instead of lets PULL THEM(ChristianINFIDEL CONMEN) DOWN down Bad-belle syndrome.. without any better alternative of your own to show on Ground, Give Kudos to individuals who are able to lift up he Quality of life of their own constituency and hope to emulate them for your constituency as well!!!! Thats how things get better done!!

On the contrary lead city VC isnt the owner of the school the owner of the school was retired professor from the university of ile-ife. church owned schools cant be on this list because they have members and freind in the power. e.g fed govt offer 1st class grads of convenant scholarship, what happened to those in MAULAG? okojie has been requesting for money from lCU for years now and the school took him to court.
The truth his all this other university are there because of LEAD CITY UNIVERSITY. this school has been challenging nuc for years over their accreditation. some years back wanted to scrap biochemistry in lcu, Lcu simply asked them to withdraw that of bowen 1st coz bowen dont have the facilities they, and ((((poom)))) NUC dropped that. Okojie is just a greedy man. i fnk lcu shld try to give ote-farouk treatment

rhymz: I want to assume your school was Madonna. Thank God for you but I dare say, that even if you had not attended your school you still would have been better off, perhaps more intelligent sef. Seriously, there is something fundamentally wrong with the way most private Universities are run, most of the times by individuals with little or no experience in Acadamic management. It even shows in the kind of restrictions that hinders independent thoughts and ideas needed to fit in in this ever conpetetive world. Currently, I have 2 of my cousins in Madonna, one chose Madona because she did not do well in her WAEC exams. Her experience in the school is not so flattery neither is she an academic firebrand. Seriously, NUC has not been proactive.

I agree with you on most counts but on my being more intelligent if I hadn't attended Madonna, well guess we will both never now would we? And yes, NUC does need to be proactive. Universities are citadels of learning preparing people to cope in every aspect of life - academic and social. Stifling social interactions should be to a limit and forcing students to pass courses (was it Bible Knowledge you mentioned earlier?) not directly related to their academic majors is just unfair. But let's keep our fingers crossed, hopefully things are now going to change

Some of these so called private universities will go the way the banks went in the 80s. Anybody that has money to throw about now go into private varsity business. The NUC on the other hand issue licenses to every dick and harry without carrying out background search and research on who are behind the idea. Nigeria still has a very long way to go. We seem not learn even from our own past mistakes.

Wonder why Caleb and covenant are not in the list. When i heard the news on wazobia this morning, i said well done to NUC but it is coming very late.
Graduates from most of these church owned universities are chaffs......my boss children are examples. My boss brings their assignments, term papers and projects in the office for various staff to do.
Yesterday i was asking my boss how is his son going to defend a project he didn't write and knows nothing about....his reply was he will see the school authorities before the defense. What a father!

Something NL are saying they are beefing churches.......for crying out loud, churches should lead by example jor. Am a catholic, i think that Madonna, Caleb, Caritas, Universities should be closed definitely with immediate effect.

Okojie is only out to extort Owoeye. NUC arbitrarilly shut down the law faculty of Lead City university, the school instituted a prima fascie case against the Okojie-led NUC and won based on the fact that they met all the provisions entrenched in the NUC Act. And till date, the NUC have yet to comply with the pronouncement of the court. I think it's time the house of assembly intervened in this matter before Okojie drag the NUC's name in the mud merely because of a personal vendetta he has with prof.Owoeye(Chairman, governing council,Lead City University)f

Nigga please shut up you are mouthing off useless redundant platitudes. What has bokoharam and sanusi got to do with anything here. Do you even understand the gibberish you are spewing here?? Which Oxford, Cambridge and Havard are church owned?? How old is this kid that is incapable of comprehension? You keep contradicting yourself with incoherent argument and muddling up issues. You are a pathetic lier that whose words worths nothing to even the mouth that speaks it, which Northern state is sharia compliant? Until between 2000-2002 when Northerners felt OBJ had shortchanged them and started using the issue of making the 19 northern state compliant, No northern state has actually practised it before then and after it died down. Where in the north did you attend government owned school that enforced islamic studies on you? Whicg government school by the way? State or FG? Don't come here using generic statements to argue with me I care less about such a stooopid antics of argument. I attended a missionary school myself, we had alot of muslim students there too, my class captain was a muslim yoruba named Wahab, I am talking of St Finbarr's college in Akoka. Nobody was forced to observe catholic prayers or even attend the ash wednesday mass inside the school. Neither was any muslim punished for expressing his faith.
The basis of your argument is so faulty, petty and contraductory that it unwittingly strengthened my argument that emphasizing religion in higher institutions of learning has further divided us and create more acrimony amongst us. The method of forceful forcing people to observe some setdown religious creed as done in CU is nothing different from those Bokoharam goons you are demonizing, both methods smirks off ignorance and intolerance, simple. Your argument is weak and contradictory plus you don't need to lie to butress your point. You are just as intolerant and arrogant as the people you accuse, your types are obviously the reason why I made the statement in the first place .

Mr Reference
I understand where you are coming from, I am not so much in contention with their rules and regulations cos as you said it is a matter of choice. However, it behoves on the authorities in this country to ensure that no operator do things arbitrarily all because they are a private institution.
The level of abitrary exertion of power one sees in these schools especially the church run ones is so appalling and exploitative. This people most times make rules and regulations that are stiffling and have no regards to efforts of the parents and guidance that dutifully send their wards to these schools.
Imagine suspending close to 500 students for four weeks just because instead of resuming on saturday 3rd january, they came in 5th january. And these are students due to write exams on the 12th of thesame month. What kind of punishment do one call that? How can you call such a calous set-back punishment? How is anyone supposed to learn from such a wickedness. Amongst those expelled are final year students, how do you explain such to a parents that pays school fees as much as 400k and above? What that means is that they will have to miss the semester exam. What kind of rules be that one? In a civilized clime they would be sued for such a wicked act.
You need to hear the kind of frivolous things that people get suspended for. To a point, they appoint fellow student to spy on their coleagues and give report to the authorities, are all that neccessary in a University. Whatever happened to privacy!! What effect does all thes kind of nonesense have in improving their academics if not to mentally assault their psychy and forcefully make people conform.
The fact is this, NUC are not doing their jobs that is why such things happen. No University else where whether faith based or not arbitrarily wield authority like our so-called "private Universitis" do especially the ones that claim to hear from God himself.

Unfortunately, most of them do not deserve the license in the first place.

Reference:

What rules are we talking about here my bro? Am sure those rules don't infringe on fundamental human right? Am dead sure if what these private institutions make thier students go through are were to be put in black and white the free minded students wouldn't append thier signatures to such improsonment. For Christ sake, Uni's are meant to impact general knowledge in to students and students are meant to pass through school so as to better fit in to the society after thier studies. Even in seminaries (catholic), there are rooms for intellectual discourse and exploration.

Most of these private university do not deserve their license in the first place.the students there are treated like babies, why must they enforce church things on the students, yet it hadly makes impact.the robbery that took place sometimes ago at that prison yard called covenant univ has the involvement of some of the students according to testimony given by the slowpoke members.the students are subjected to ridiculous things all in the name of church,at the end, they end up being made a robot..its all simply the failure of the regulatory body.any attempt to criticize such, would be met by been called blasphemy by the ready made robots

rhymz: No fewer than 120 students may have been expelled by the authorities of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, for what has been described as “wilful disobedience and insubordination” on the part of the students.

All the things u guys have said so far cuts through both private and public schools.
There are intelligent students in both. And there are also Lazy students who have the option of bribing their lecturers.
Infrastructures in most private schools are better than their public counterparts Infact most of them borrow equipment to present to the nuc staffs when they come for accreditation.
The truth is the whole educational system in this country is in shambles.

Define "poor education" please? I graduated on time, served in the NYSC programe, got a job in less than 2 months by dint of hard work, in my second job now which is in a senior management position and quite comfortable. I won't have been able to achieve all this without some help from my "poor education" as you call it. My school was not the best especially in terms of infrastructure but show me the Fed or State Uni that has it all in Naija? I hope my school sorts out the issue with NUC on time but I am happy it happened in a way. Let them correct the mistakes they made with their pioneer students so that new undergrads don't go through the hardship some of us did.
Vivacious vivi, thumbs up swirrie, i luv ur maturity. Though u were insulted by dat dude but u kept ur cool, if not dat u r gainfully employed, i wud hav recommended u 2 work as a HR manager in a big firm!

rhymz: Nigga please shut up you are mouthing off useless redundant platitudes.
You are just as intolerant and arrogant as

the people you accuse, your types are obviously the reason why I made the statement in the first place .
\

Let others be is what i am saying. These are not Government "owned" Schools. I am sure you went to St Finbarrs after the schools were taken over by the government and are run as government schools with the former name still intact. the same way you feel irked because of your religious view is the same way it happens in muslim climes and in their institutions up north. seems to me that your world view is only restricted to Yorubaland. This was how the missionaries raised the quality students of yore. And before you castigate me for oxford and havard please do your research lest you sound like an ignoramus. Tolerance means respecting other peoples views as well. since you value education that much , this should challenge you to offer alternatives to this if you feel you dont like the way these private institutions are operating; let me hear of Imams or Big business Muslim moguls building institutions themselves rather than giving alms ,feeding poor people during ramadan and only sponsoring their people on holy pilgrimages. deeds that make one really look pious but is not enough to add meaningful value to the quality of lives affected.I wont be surprised that if you had your way, you could actually burn or tear down these institutions the way you are talking. Ala BOKO Haram style. Build your own and lets see how you run it. My own na my own. Our own no belong to anybody and as such it is really no body's business at the end of the day. Thats the secret behind the continued relevance and standards they continually turn out.

Tansian university is the main reason why i coundn't finish my part time studies up till today , all because their fees are so expensive, I think they deserve it, After all the money they still can't get all the facilities required of them.

Like seriously how old are you? Are like 5 or something cos you sure present your case worse than a toddler. Mr Man, the establishment of Oxford, Havard or even Cambrige had little or nothing to do with any religious sect let alone catholics. Stop citing them as examples and asking me to do research on them like you know any better, it is you who should check your facts here before making very dumb and unfounded claims you can not prove. I dare you to bring evidence of any of these schools connections to a religious sect or order.
Again I warn you stop this your zig-zag argument that is contradictory and pointless. What have muslims got to do with the point I am trying to make. I went to St Finbarr's College and my kid brother was there when the management became full time missionary, it did not turn the school intolerant, till date they still take in students of all background and religious belief, they still maintain thesame tenets of respecting people's freedom to express their own belief through their own religious tenets. You sounded like a Fool trying to guage my views as based on the fact that I grew up in Lagos. Do you know how many Nigerian and African cities that I have visited since I left secondary school? Do I come across to you as some parochial local champion that views issues from the confines of regional boundaries? Matter of fact am not even in Lagos. Nigga, stop trying to psychoanalyze me and just address the issues, you barely know me.
From your myopic view, you are of the opinion that since Christian churches are busy erecting Universities they run like monastries, muslims should go ahead and build Universities run with strict sharia laws. Do you know how divisive such a situation will be. The last thing any educated person need is religiously bias orientation and psyche. People go to Universities to broaden their educational experience and gather more knowledge not to be reformed, religiously re-orienred and indoctrinated.
