THE 12 WNNERS AND LOSERS OF THE APC SPECIAL PRESIDENTIAL CONVENTION: 1. President Mohammadu Buhari Against so such rumours of a certain anointing bottle and a last minute shocker of the emergence of Lawan as consensus candidate, an incumbent President defied pressure from cabal, washed his hands off and clean, stood his ground to ensure a first of its kind, free, fair and credible party primaries that has all but saved the Party from implosion contrary to the expectations of naysayers. VERDICT: Winner! 2. Abdulahi Adamu The National Chairman has stained his white beyond the magic of the laundry man. Take this 3 odds for free, Adamu is going, he will be booted out as soon as next years elections are over. Few political analysts will understand and digest this now. VERDICT: Loser! 3. RIVERS STATE AND RIVERS PEOPLE After the highhandedness and the smearing loud mouth of Gov Nyesom Wike had painted us all black. About 38Billion Naira was pilfered from the state tax payers account for a Presidential bazaar that was all but a national disgrace. Thankfully, The Rt The Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi came to launder our battered images. He refused to give a dime to a delegate and never tasted a drop of alcohol before mounting the rostrum on the biggest political stage of anybody's life. The dignity of the Rivers man was restored that we are not all alcoholics, loud mouthed and profligate. VERDICT: Winner! 4. KOGI STATE AND KOGI PEOPLE Gov Yahaha Bello in a parody of the youth president so much touted, squandered and wasted millions of naira of the good people of Kogi. Just like Rivers people, salaries have not been paid to Kogi workers, pensioneers are dying before their time, no promotion in the state, no impactful project, yet there was enough money for a Presidential bargain that was anything but phantom. With no Rotimi Amaechi to launder their image and no salary to come possibly till Yahaha hands over as the state is plunged into humongous debt, you can only feel sorry for Kogi People. VERDICT: Loser! 5. S.E. AND THE IGBO RACE As all the SW candidates baring Vice President Osinbajo, took turn to step down for a man they called 'their senior brother, their father, their leader' all the SE candidates took to podium to decry marginalization at the end of which nobody stepped down for nobody, or better put, everybody contested against everybody. Whereas 5 SW states emptied their votes into Lagos, 5 SE states emptied greedily into 'SELF'. Rochas stayed with 92 Imo votes, Umahi with Ebonyi votes, Nnamani with Enugu, Ogbonaya pocketed Abia own, the SE was divided into pieces by her very own leaders. With the region's next realistic shot at the Presidency now to come after 16years should Asiwaju win the general election, you can only but feel disappointed. VERDICT: Loser! 6. THE NORTHERN GOVERNORS No politician will do you a favour for free. There are 3 interests in politics - Personal Interest, Constituency Interest i.e interest of your people or tribe and then National interest. This is how it is world wide. Which ever one you place first as a leader goes on to define you. Whether its personal interest first as an Obasanjo, tribal interest first as people have alleged of Buhari, or National first in the way and manner Goodluck did. In insisting on a Southern Presidency, the northern Govs may have been scheming for Vice ticket and their chances of vying for President in 8 years time instead of 16years that a Lawan presidency would have spelt for them. They worked for their permutation and they got it. VERDICT: Winner! 7. PROF YEMI OSINBAJO Its been 64years since Chinua Achebe in his Things fall apart first declared "Those whose Palm-kernels were cracked for them by a benevolent spirit should not forget to be humble". Here, Asiwaju has been the benevolent spirit behind the success of Osinbajo and it is for that reason that south westerners had demanded for his humility by not daring his master. And like the Igbo proverb will go, "a fly that does not heel advice follows the corpse to the grave". At the risk of political ostracization in the SW, the man who was tagged "Judas Iscariot" last good friday, shrugged off all wise counsel not to dig it out toe to toe, face to face with Asiwaju. Now things have fallen apart and uncertainties are upon him. VERDICT: Loser 8. GOV DAVE UMAHI Cited PDP's reluctance to zone the Presidency to the SE as his reason for dumping the party so much so that analysts were left wondering if President Buhari had promised him the ticket in the APC. He began his open romance with President Buhari at a time the 95% V 5% saga was still very fresh in the region. Fast forward to the convention, he contested, cried marginalization, refused to step down for a southeasterner and a southeasterner refused to step down for him. Failure was the out come and questions will be asked if Gov Dave Umahi could have mounted a better challenge in the PDP than he did in the APC. VERDICT: Loser! 9. MUSLIMS In a country sharply divided between North and South, Christians and Muslims, political advantages are also sought along these lines. After the 8years of President Buhari and the possibility of another 8years of Tinubu, its a massive advantage to the Muslim community who will now keep the steering of leadership for 16years uninterrupted. They may also point to Former Presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan as 2 Christian Presidents in quick succession but for now, the advantage lies in Islam. Fortunately though, the country will not be Islamized and that is all that matters. VERDICT: Winner! 9. SEN MAGNUS ABE Sen Abe who has always been at logger head with Rotimi Amaechi is the leader and the head of Freedom House - the APC faction in Rivers State that has campaigned and worked for Asiwaju. Will a Tinubu's Presidency offer Sen Abe the much needed political salvation?. Being a Tinubu man, will hands change and he replace Amaechi next year as the sole Minister from Rivers State?. As Minister, will he arrive in 2027 with federal might and deploy same to bulldozing whosoever will be sitting as Governor out especially if its Simi Fubara of PDP because with Tonye Cole, the APC federal government may be reluctant to do so against one of her own. Having been the weakest of the 3 gladiators of Wike, Amaechi and he - Abe, in Rivers politics owing largely to his lack of government backed powers and funds, will it be his turn to wield enormous powers from next year and deliver what has been tagged the Ogoni Governorship which many have said can only be taken by force just like Wike did in 2015?. For Sen Abe the possibilities are endless. VERDICT: Winner! 11. CHIBUIKE ROTIMI AMAECHI At 23 he was in politics and has been consistently in it for 34 good years. Uninterrupted. That's legendary. He has seen it all and has had all the positions. He is the most decorated Nigerian politician dead or alive. Speaker of the Rivers State house of Assembly for 8years, Chairman conference of Nigerian speakers for 8years. Governor of Rivers State for 8years, Chairman Nigeria Governors forum for 8years, Minister for almost 8years, and Director General of a Presidential Campaign if you like for 8years. There is no richer political resume in Nigeria from South to North, East to West. With the Dan Amanar Daura failing to clinch the Presidential ticket and the Vice Presidential ticket not feasible, there's nothing left greater for him to aspire for and in 16years time he will be 73 and out of power for way too long. Will the powerful ministerial cadre be the zenith of his long and illustrious political career or there could be one or two surprises in the offing. Will he finally return home to enthrone his candidate, Tonye Cole or will be muscled out again by Gov Nyesom Wike and Sen Abe? Whichever way things go, Rotimi Amaechi will not bury his face in shame just as he won't go about smiling. This contest has taken enormous toll on him and his physiognomy and demeanor on stage yesterday, did enough to suggest so. VERDICT: Winner/Loser! 12. ASIWAJU AHMED BOLA TINUBU Rapture is upon lagos, the city boy has done it and a life long dream about to come to pass. 'Victoria Tandem' is the song on the streets of Lagos from Lekki to Mushin, Ikorodu to Badagry. Bourdillon is the new Mecca and Jerusalem of political pilgrimages, it will host more politicians, diplomats, business tycoons and solidarity groups than Aso Rock will in the next 12 months. The joy of Lagos will be understandable. It is the biggest state in the land with the biggest economy and has given so much to Nigeria and will now be repaid with 8years Presidency, with it, the inherent promise of her 37 LCDA gaining the full status of Local Government Areas 20years after they were created by the man who created them himself. And now the debate in the coming days will now be on whether Asiwaju's outburst in Abeokuta was a calculated political master stroke to send a quick message of fire and brimstone to arm twist and swing last minutes decisions in his favour. In the end, it is Glory Glory Asiwaju! VERDICT: Winner! ©Menebue Saro Bakpo (Political Analyst) |
