I burst into FullStack development in 2019. Although I have about 10 years experience as a Wordpress website designer. Since then I have honed my skills and can comfortably take a job as a FullStack developer or a more specialized role as a Frontend or Backend developer. The thing is my brother relocated to UK late last year with his family. Since then he has been trying to encourage me to relocate that my skills is in high demand. Besides, he tried to compare me with some of the guys working in the same field there that I have better skill than them. Now the main issue is that I'm not keen yet on relocating. Personally I felt that there are so much problems in all sectors of the economy and the society in Nigeria and Africa as a whole which opens a lot of opportunities for developers. Besides, Nigeria is also becoming a destination of investment opportunities for startups. My first target now is to tap into these opportunities. Recently, I signed a contract worth over N11million for the expansion of my first project. And I expect more of such expansion to still take place. By my calculation if one product could generate already about N17million from one client, there is no telling what will happen when I officially roll it out in the market. I'm also working on a couple of other software to address other business and societal need which will require my presence in Nigeria to make it work. If I succumb to the pressure from my brother, I could abandoned some of these projects especially the ones in the pipeline. I know if I set my mind on it I can easily get sponsored for relocation with my level of skills. But I'm not sure if that will be a great move at this point in time. I have never really like to be employed. I like to be my own boss and possibly employ others. Now I have two options, established a startup here in Nigeria and if time permits work remotely or relocate to work in a company for around £45000 - £75000 per annum. How will you approach this. |

Always talk in dollars or pounds or Euro. Talking in naira will make one think it huge money when it's not. |
| Re: Should I Relocate Or Work Remotely As A Developer? by realunclej(op): 11:29am On Jun 16, 2022 |
parkervero:ok. If you mean my contract, it's a local project and we agreed payment should be in Naira. By the way I worked with people from around the world there is no big deal in pounds or dollar. If I'm working with a foreign client as a freelancer, I looked at what's the worth of the project at international level and charge you the dollar or pounds equivalent. And if I'm working on a local Project, I looked at what's the worth of the project at international level and bill you the Naira equivalent. What's important is not the currency but the value of financial and other rewards you get back. |

realunclej:Your stack is backend, I presume. What primary PL do you use? I might want to connect with you. I have experience in Core Java, OOP, Spring/Springboot, Spring MVC, Spring Data JPA, Hibernate and SQL. |

parkervero:I do FullStack. But for Backend I'm good with Node.js and 80% Python/Django. Others are frameworks and associated techs which I'm good to go with. |

But I'm now in the process of registering a LTD company and getting all government licences to carry out it services for government entities. I still fill that's the best situation for me but I need to convince my bro who is insisting I should relocate |

realunclej:Based on this information, I would say stay in Nigeria and build your business because you are making more money than most devs in Nigeria already. Most people I know who relocate need a second passport. If you really want a second passport, you can just acquire Citizenship by Investment in specific countries next year for $100,000 - $150,000. As you are already making money in big numbers. That money should be easy for you to get. |

motionarena:that's the point I'm trying to drive at. I know with my current skill level I can easily get engaged as a remote engineer. But I'm still taking some high paying job courses where you have less than 0.5% market supply. My approach would be to develop an application targeting Nigeria and Africa at large with these skills set and use it for my portfolio. |
