Ex-IGP Tafa Balogun Is Dead by ArewaNorth(op): 9:08pm On Aug 04, 2022
Mustapha Balogun, a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), is dead.

Family sources confirmed the death of Balogun, who became IGP in March 2002, to Daily Trust on Thursday night, but did not go into details.

Born on August 8, 1947 at Ila-Orangun in Osun State, Tafa Balogun, was the 21st Inspector-General of Police. He was a member of cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Course 3. Having worked in various Police commands throughout the federation, and earning his promotions as at when due, Tafa, was at a time, the Principal Staff Officer (PSO) to former Inspector-General of Police, Muhammadu Gambo, Deputy Commission of Police Edo State, the pioneer Commissioner of Police in Delta State. He was also CP in Rivers and Abia states.

Tafa, a fellow of the premier highest military institution in Nigeria, the National War College, later became the Assistant Inspector General of Police A.I.G Zone One, Kano, from where he was named the 21st IGP of Police on March 6, 2002.

His infamous trial drew global attention in 2005. On April 4, 2005, Tafa Balogun was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja for stealing and laundering of over $100 million in his three years as Inspector General of Police from the Police treasury.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under Nuhu Ribadu brought 70 charges against him, covering the period from 2002 to 2004 when he was the Inspector General of Police. He made a plea bargain with the court in exchange for returning much of the property and money. He was sentenced to six months in jail.

Judge Binta Nyako said her sentence reflected that Balogun was a first offender and had shown remorse. He was directed by the court to pay N500, 000 on each of eight counts charges totaling N4 million.

His trial was full of drama. One of such was when he collapsed on his seat on June 29, 2005, at the Abuja High Court.

The former police boss, who pleaded guilty to eight of the 56 count-charges directly affecting him, was convicted and sentenced to six months in each of the charges, which is however to run concurrently.

He was released on February 9, 2006 after serving his sentence, part of it at Abuja’s National Hospital.

Tafa Balogun is a classic example of "na di person wey day catch be thief".

Yes, Tafa Balogun was an annoyingly corrupt IGP but NOT any different from the other top police officers or senior civil servants like the former Accountant General of the Federation.

Tafa Balogun. Obasanjo showed him shege. As in real shege. Himself and Samuel Afolabi were throughly embarrassed by the EFCC and Obasanjo that employed them

Tafa Balogun is the grandmaster of people collapsing in court

Served only 6months in prison and part of it was served at the Natonals hospital Abuja. If Mr. Bologna was an unknown poor man would they allow him serve his term in hospital? I doubt it.

Useless piece of law!

May God console the family and associates.

He was one of those who forgot what made them top of the pack and sacrificed the value system and sound character that made them phenomenally successful soon as they got to the peak of their career. It was a huge lesson I learnt from his avoidable downfall; stay true to your values no matter what. Even that tough temptation will pass.

He , including others like the disgraced, recently sacked Auditor General Idris on trial for stealing and corruption, remains a lesson for others out there; "sebi this is Nigeria" nonsense rhetoric won't help you when you allow people push you into crime. By the time you do their bidding because of your greed, they will wreck you, your career and abandon you .You will be convicted alone because you are naive, greedy, lazy youth okanjua with get rich quick mentality. You will suffer alone ni o.

He was lucky to be alive to make amends with his Creator and be at relative peace before exiting this world. He was even the Chairman or Director of a well run profitable bank listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

During his time as IGP, if you see him professionally attired in his mopol police uniform, you will love to join the police! He was a dashing handsome poster boy for how a Mopol officer should appear on duty .He was equally very eloquent, brilliant and talented but talent is not enough.

Adieu Alhaji Tafa Balogun.

Re: Ex-IGP Tafa Balogun Is Dead by 7victor(m):
That's why it's good to do good, help people, be kind, be loving, be gentle, be caring, because there's nothing you can take out of this life except your good works.

This instruction is evident in 1 timothy 6:18-19

As Christians, we are of the absolute conviction that Jesus Christ's righteousness is what matters. This is true.

But the Bible asserts that faith without work is dead.

The righteousness of Jesus Christ is defined similarly with our righteousness.

That's why every one who believes in Jesus Christ and has His righteousness in him, would automatically begin to live a righteous life.

Towards this understanding, each person should endeavor to uphold the principles of kindness, goodness and righteousness.

If you are going on the road and you see someone stranded without transport fare, help him or her.

Feed the hungry, give clothes to the naked, etc. Remember that in the Bible, Jesus Christ spoke of this as what will determine our eternal destination, when the sheep will be separated from the goats.

These are the things that would matter when you die and not your material possession because you won't go with your physical possession when you die.

Faith in Jesus Christ is the proximate reason you are saved.

But you need to concretize your faith by being good, kind, caring, gentle and loving.

Live and let live.

Show love to people and to animals.
