The Best And Worst Of Nigerian Footballers Abroad by ghettokid1(op): 8:37am On Aug 16, 2022
GOAL reviews the nation’s best performers around the world this weekend, and picked out a few who must improve

GOAL analyses how talents from the West African side performed in various European countries.

Taiwo Awoniyi, Joe Aribo, and Ademola Lookman are among the Nigerian stars that put up impressive displays.

However, the same could not be said about Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi as the Foxes were caged at the Emirates Stadium.

Review of Nigerians abroad
Taiwo Awoniyi inspired Nottingham Forest's huge win, as Joe Aribo opened his English elite division account against Leeds United.

Too Good: Taiwo Awoniyi

After not scoring in the English top-flight opener against Newcastle United, the Nottingham Forest striker scored his maiden Premier League goal in the 1-0 triumph over West Ham United.

Twelve minutes into the game, the former Union Berlin man had missed the target, but he made amends by tucking the ball home before the half-time break.

With that, he became the 37th Nigerian to find the net in the English elite division. After playing for 72 minutes, he was replaced by Sam Surridge as the Reds held on to pick their first victory in the 2022-23 campaign.

Too Bad: Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho

Leicester City suffered a 4-2 defeat to Arsenal as Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi could do little in preventing the Foxes from crumbling at the Emirates Stadium.

Ndidi – who was on parade from start to finish – put up a below-par outing while Iheanacho who was brought in for Jamie Vardy could not trouble the Gunners' backline.

With this result, Brendan Rodgers’ men have failed in their last two matches in the current season.

Too Good: Moses Simon
https://assets.goal.com/v3/assets/bltcc7a7ffd2fbf71f5/blteb057ce835beabff/62f726881a0149116842190e/Moses_Simon_of_Nantes_and_Nigeria.jpg?quality=80&width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp
Moses Simon scored his first goal of the season as Nantes played out a 1-1 draw against Lille in Friday’s Ligue 1 fixture.

The winger had given the Canaries a well-deserved 28th-minute lead at Stade de la Beaujoire, however, super-sub Ismaily restored parity for the Mastiff with 14 minutes left on the clock.

While Simon was in action from start to finish, the result left Nantes in ninth position with two points to their credit.

Too Good: Joe Aribo
https://assets.goal.com/v3/assets/bltcc7a7ffd2fbf71f5/blt562938cf463e399d/62ed3d9b17185c1147a8c2ed/Joe_Aribo_Southampton_2022-23-2.jpg?quality=80&width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp
Super-sub Aribo came off the bench to score his debut Premier League goal as Southampton erased a two-goal deficit to play a 2-2 draw with Leeds United.

Having replaced Stuart Armstrong in the 61st minute, the former Rangers man inspired Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men to get a point at home.

Adam Armstrong’s blistering pace down the left allowed him the space to cross and find Aribo, who showed great composure to round Illan Meslier and find the bottom corner for his first goal.

Too Good: Ademola Lookman
https://assets.goal.com/v3/assets/bltcc7a7ffd2fbf71f5/blta1a8a32cf3eee648/62f801bf6d5e0c0f1dc294a2/lookman.jpg?quality=80&width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp
Atalanta secured a huge 2-0 win over hosts Sampdoria, with Lookman scoring his debut Italian top-flight goal.

The Nigeria international was introduced for Luis Muriel in the 63rd minute by manager Gian Piero Gasperini, and he did not disappoint as he scored late in the game to give the visitors a well-deserved victory in the 2022-23 opener despite having his initial effort chalked off by VAR.

Atalanta have now won their debut Serie A season game played away from home without conceding any goal for the first time in history.

Too Good: David Okereke
https://assets.goal.com/v3/assets/bltcc7a7ffd2fbf71f5/bltecd12861d6320211/619a78a664fa2c1174c7b337/mumudu.jpg?quality=80&width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp
Okereke scored on his Serie A debut although Cremonese suffered a 3-2 defeat against Fiorentina on Sunday.

Giacomo Bonaventura had given the hosts a 16th-minute lead, albeit, the Nigerian levelled matters for his team after finishing off a low cross past Fiorentina goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

Although he was cautioned in the 82nd minute, that did not rule out the fact that he put up an impressive shift at Artemio Franchi in Firenze.

This OP dey watch football so? grin

Awoniyi missed a clear chance but got lucky when the ball hit his feet and went in.

Iheanacho and Ndidi played well. My beloved Arsenal were just stronger and faster than the entire team. Iheanacho even set up Maddi for his goal and Ndidi denied Jesus his hatrick.

Go watch football abeg!

Op that a club lost does not mean all the players were bad. Iheanacho came in for Vardy and provided an assist and you rate him as bad?

But Kelechi needs to go to a club that has no Nigerian in it. He plays too much.

Nigerian players are overrated as fvck smiley

The last nigerian player that made an impact in Europe was Kanu nwankwo smiley

It's either they are inconsistent, play in a shitty club, plagued by injuries or just there undecided

Even Mikel obi who played for the Almighty Chelsea ain't iconic or revered in Europe.
