our defense is poor...
Very poor. They make easy inroad into our paint but we are finding it extremely difficult to go into theirs. Curious about what our total and percentage FGs is

I seriously doubt we will make the world cup. Seriously doubt it.

I tell you. This game was ours to lose and we are doing a very good job at it.

Why insist on 3 balls when you need to close the gap.
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread! by Danielnino00(m): 9:54pm On Aug 26, 2022
8/38 3 pointers made... We don't have good three point shooters..Why waste our shots on threes?

...thats the new way, i guess golden state warriors had a hand in this style of play, however, those guys are some of the best shooters in the world, steph, klay et al..the problem is when you are nt scoring you look very horrible.

...that sthe problem, we do not have good shooters, but want to shoot....recipe fr disaster, the guards are not creaative enough too....to be honest, they do not have to go with this atitude, my own mind don dey Rwanda 2023, when our ladies will win the Afro basket for the 4 time in a row, and six editions in total.
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread! by carbonado(m): 10:00pm On Aug 26, 2022
the old school guys hate this way of playing by basically just spaming 3 pointers, Barkley, shaq et al....do not like it at all, also it makes the big man not too active. i guess i will be rooting for south sudan, they play my kind of basketball, high tempo, high octane basketball, not this sluggish way we play.

My emphasis is on game management really. It's obvious we were better shooters of the ball beyond the arch, but when you have less than 25% 3pts throws and you're behind in a game, your primary goal is to close the game by looking for easy lay ups of driving in and picking fouls.

We didn't do that and turned over the ball more for them to increase their lead.

Truth is, the ladies have always been out best bet in achieving anything worthwhile on that world stage. We bunked that chance by depriving them of the world cup.

None of the key players of Dtigress would have missed this qualifiers if they were the ones playing. This was the year they were supposed to show up on the world stage, sadly Sunday Dare made that impossible.
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread! by lovewins: 10:16pm On Aug 26, 2022
To have a chance at qualification, we have to win our last 2 games and even that may likely not be enough for automatic qualification.

........none of the dtigress will miss such, were is jordan nwora, guess what, Jokic and Gianis were going at each other yesterday(serbia vs greece....it is well, we do not have to qualify, let the best in africa at the moment represent us....for the ladies, we still have some young bulls that are eligble to play for naija, also some of our team are in Japan as we speak, they are holding scrimmage against the Japanese squad, just to prepare the Japanese team for the world cup.....i think they will be there for a week.

I'm even surprised Nwora didn't show.. His foundation has been holding basketball camps across Nigeria for the past one month, though he didn't show up for any of them . Perhaps he is trying to sort out a new team since his contract with the bucks is up .
Achiuwa too was a no show..

If we qualify for the world cup now, they will all be available..

Sunday Dare no do us well at all .. I saw USA rooster for the world cup training camp and the Ogwumikes were absent...They could be playing for us next month!

I'm interested in seeing only Nneka in the green jersey. Chiney hasn't regained her touch quite frankly. I watched all of their games this season and Nneka is still balling at 32. Sadly her team cost her a playoff cause she literally did most of the scoring for the sparks this season.

Hoping that they get a visionary GM and a great coach that will build around her.

Queen Egbo is another fantastic prospect for the Dtigress. Her defensive play is top notch and she made top 5 rookie player of the season.

Arike was invited to camp for team USA but I sincerely doubt she will make the team. She's making exactly the same mistake Elizabeth Williams made. At least Nneka always made the US team, she only got left out during the Olympics. Arike should start seriously considering joining the Dtigress and shouldn't wait till she's in her 30s. The US right now is a bundle of talent and I also sincerely wouldn't pick her.

Missing the world cup is quite painful..But on the brighter side, we still have the Afrobasket and Olympics next year and 2024.. I believe Nneka will still have some active years left in her by that time..
Lets hope coach Otis and the girls aren't too angry not.to turn up again..Cus given how hard they worked to get that ticket, the ministry of sport did them dirty ..

The girls will turn up. They were at the for front of advocacy for the return of Nigeria from the self ban even though they knew it wouldn't suffice for them making the world cup. It of course was a painful experience especially because of what the world cup could have done for their individual careers. They'll however come back stronger.

I don't think it's accurate..
Even the FIBA website is showing that all the teams in group F have played the same number of games.. I believe Central African Republic results from their group was chalked off so as to create an even playing ground for the teams from group A
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread! by Danielnino00(m): 9:11am On Aug 28, 2022
Last game of the window today at 2pm against Angola... .If we fail to win, then we'll face an uphill task to qualify as we will have to win the remaining second leg games... It could be worse cus the final window is in February and we won't have our NBA players available..we may not even have our top players in Europe available...

I thought as much.

So how many games to go and any hope of finishing at least 3rd for the playoffs?

What I don't get is; why should our best players never available during qualifiers only to be present when or if we qualify?

All the serious countries playing qualifiers have their best players representing them so what's the excuse here?

Yes.

This is what the table currently looks like. We'll have 3 more games in February 2023

We'll definitely be 3rd this window if we defeat Angola.

I don't know how this current squad can defeat Angola.

I pray they prove me wrong today.

Angola aren't unbeatable, but are obviously going into this game as the favourite. If everyone in the team wakes up and try to do the simple things then we may just win.
