EX MILITANTS THREATEN STRIKE OVER PIPELINE SURVEILLANCE CONTRACT

The Federal Government has been given a seven-day deadline to cancel its N4 billion monthly surveillance award to Mr. Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, the erstwhile head of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, or face a large-scale uprising.

If the contract was not withdrawn and re-awarded to accommodate former Niger Delta agitators from the state, the organization threatened to halt oil production in the state.

According to The PUNCH, the FG renewed an N4 billion monthly contract with the ex-militant Tompolo on Monday for the surveillance of oil pipelines.

This was stated in a letter of petition signed by the State Coordinator, Johnson Solomon, and the Secretary, Godwin Edohoaqua, and addressed to Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

The group argued that it was wrong for the FG to award such a contract without engaging any of the youths of the state, whose communities had suffered many years of environmental degradation due to oil exploration and exploitation. The petition, which was also addressed to security agencies, was obtained by our correspondent on Sunday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

"In 2015, when President Goodluck Jonathan was preparing to pass over to President Buhari, ex-militants from Akwa Ibom State objected to the National Assembly about a similar contract which did not meet their expectations," the petition stated in part.

"It is wrong for the Federal Government to marginalize the youths of Akwa Ibom State by awarding such a bogus contract to a sectional former leader of ex-militants while oil and gas pipelines cross our land but we are not engaged. We won't accept such marginalization," the protest letter reads. "The leadership of the National Assembly, with the heads of security agencies, received our protest letter and assured us that Akwa Ibom ex-militants will be We are giving the federal government seven days to take action, after which we'll start a long-term protest that would halt oil and gas production in Akwa Ibom State.

The agreement we signed with the Federal Government during Amnesty and our patriotism for Nigeria have prevented our youth from participating in pipeline damage and oil theft, but this should not be a criterion for excluding us from consideration for the contract.

In order to prevent further unrest and any unfavorable acts that would undermine government aims, the committee suggested the federal government award the contract in segments to accommodate adolescents from all the oil-producing states in the region.

"Only young people from the state can defend the pipes better than a visitor since we are familiar with the geography and pipeline routes flowing across the state." The group asserted that if our youth participate in such an initiative, the unemployment rate will go down.
