Reasons are simple - he threw Boris under the bus while Liz Truss is a Boris ally and Conservative party members love Boris.

Another 2 blots on his name among Conservative party members is he was holding an American green card till last year and his wife is registered as a non domiciliary and pays no tax in UK. I just read that in some quarters his agent is not comfortable with him coming from bench to play LB. I hope it won't affect his world cup chances, if he continues to start from bench.
