Irresponsible leaders using religion as tool of oppression – Kukah

By Miftaudeen Raji

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, has bemoaned what he described as irresponsible leadership from among the political and religious ranks, saying religion is only being used as a tool of oppression in the country.

The Bishop noted that there is really no problem between the two major religious groups in the country; Christians and Muslims. Kukah made this assertion while speaking on TVC.

He attributed the main problem of Nigeria to ‘irresponsible leaders,’ who, according to him, use religion as a tool of oppression, rather than for liberation. He said, “There is no problem between Christians and Muslims.

“There is a problem with irresponsible leaders who don’t want to govern properly; irresponsible religious leaders who have now seen religion as a tool of oppression, instead of a tool for liberation. This has been the thrust of my argument because these are two areas of study.

“With all sense of modesty, I have spent a good part of my life studying theology and studying religion and society,” he noted.
On the roles of religion and ethnicity in the politics of Nigeria, Kukah explained that Nigeria had failed at building governance that prioritises the welfare of citizens above any other thing.

He said, “If you are watching a football match or any game at all, that’s why there are referees. If the referee does not do what needs to be done and allows supporters to jump onto the field; you can see for yourself that referees are punishing coaches who overreach themselves by stepping even if it is just one inch, into the field.

“They are punished; sometimes they are taken off the pitch. Now, this is really what a state is supposed to be, because without the state, it will be all of us against each other.

“And that is why the state is called a leviathan. You put so much power so that the state can protect us.

“The Nigerian state has proved itself to be incompetent, grossly malfunctioning, unwilling to commit to the welfare of citizens as the principal basis of governance,” he said.

Kukah appealed to Nigerians to carry a ‘Nigeria land’ mentality, which presupposes the knowledge of shared interests, saying that the Nigerian system is only wired around politics, and not science.

Noting that Nigeria operates a democracy and not a theocratic government, the clergyman emphasised the need to have a country where the rule of law is placed over religious or ethnic sentiments.

Our Father Kukah. Please put your mind at rest. There is no fire on the mountain. People usually say there is no smoke without fire.

But in this instance, we know there is no fire beneath anywhere, it is the enemy of Nigeria probably smoking shisha or marijuana with a lot smoke just to cause confusion everywhere.

There is no religious tension anywhere. No uproar and no one is trying to suppress anyone. What Nigeria is experiencing is just a matter of time. By 2023 inshallahu, when the incoming presidency of BOLA AHMED TINUBU, will take over. Normalcy will be restore. We will fish out this bad elements among us. We will deal with them like never before.

You can't ride on Nigeria's religious unity and go scott-free. You cant undermine and understimate us as a country by calling us ZOO.

By May2023, they will prefer to go hell rather than stay in Nigeria here and cause commotion everywhere.

Kukah is right on the money,

APC presidential candidate saw that he has nothing to campaign with as his personal achievements, and that placed side by side with other contestants, he will lose the election, so he went and selected a running mate that will inflame the country with religious tensions. He had other people to choose from, but he is using religion as a tool for destabilizing the focus on performance.

PDP candidate went the other way, he started using the tribal card, stating it loud in national TV that a particular section of the country will never vote for an Igbo man, are you God?

Only Peter Obi has stayed within the confines of issue based politics, others are trying to distract us with ethnic or religious politics.

Is God not wonderful?

I can remember the time nnamdi kanu madness was high a moniker @selemempe said he will pick nnamdi kanu above Jesus any day anytime n he receives likes going to over 500

it is u Igbo that the man is stylishly referring to

I have never seen any pdp supporters or any non Igbo Christian talking about the religion issue

It is u igbos that carry the matter for head n it is u igbos that are always doing political calculations by saying

Christian’s in Nigeria will vote obi
Christian’s in d north will vote obi

It is u igbos that are making d election religion base
It is u igbos n your Labour Party that are trying to cause religious chaos cos u believe the only way u can campaign is to use the religion tactics n as it stand now u have failed cos everyone has woken to your facade

I saw a video last week where a Muslim cleric made it clear that igbos have turn the election to Muslim vs Christian

The cleric made it clear that comments he’s been seeing on social media by igbos made it clear they have declare war on their religion

I pray everyone wakes up to u igbos deciet before election so your eye go clear

Obi attends occasions by invitation. Invite him in your mosque and let's see if he will refuse.
