Titan Trust Bank is the bank that Buhari built. It is a shame what momentous incompetence and meddling into matters he knows nothing of and an obstinate refusal to take correction can lead to this outcome.

Ever since Buhari started pegging the Naira to the Dollar upon assuming ofice in 2015, the disparity between the official rate and the parallel has always been very high.

Buhari has always set the oicial rate at a price that is not market relective. To understand it better, if you were given $10,000 today, where would you change it- at the official rate of N425 or at the parallel rate o N700? i am sure it is the parallel or black market rate you will go for.
The primary reason is that the official exchange rate does the reflect the realities of the market or is not determined by the forces o demand and supply.

Lamido Sanusi said that the difference between the official and parallel rate should never be more than 3%, that anything above this will create distortions within the economy and fuel corruption. Presently, the disparity is over 60% and has led to massive corruption. It is this corruption that has made Emefiele and his colleague stupendious wealthy. Are you wondering how?

The buyer pays N5.25bn or the $10m, He pays the CBN $10m x 425 which is N4.25bn and he makes a billion naira doing absolutely nothing but act as a middle man. This is called round-tripping. Round-tripping is big business today and the banks are deep into it as well. If you doubt it, purchase an item or service online and check the conversion rate. It will be at least at $1=N480 rather than the official rate of N425.

That is why Lamido Sanusi condemned Buhari's meddling in the forex market but the president has remained obstinate despite the glaring failure it has been. It has also regressed economic growth. The primary reason for the poor economic growth since Buhari assumed office has been this.

I am quite certain next year June, the official rate will become market reflective once a new president is sworn in. Atiku and Obi have already said the official rate will be ,market determined. Though Tinubu has been mum about it, his tendency to appoint technocrats guarantees that only trusted hands would be appointed.

Anyway, with Buhari gone, Emefiele will no longer be dictated too by an economics challenged president and he will become the governor we knew before Buhari mounted office, who gave the currency the flexibility that the market needed.

If truth be told, it's not entirely his fault. The fault comes from Buhari who has been fixing the official rate ever since he assumed office.

Buhari has repeatedly said he does not believe in devaluation. Hence, whenever the Naira needs to devalue to find its new value, Buhari stands in the way.

For a country like Nigeria, the currency will more likely suffer from depreciation due to over dependence on crude oil for a large proportion of foreign exchange inflows and also the budget. Anytime the oil price drops, dollar inflow drops meaning you'll have to pay more for dollars.

Buhari would have none of that and we are paying for that folly. By refusing to devalue, the CBN is unable to meet up forex demand forcing disgruntled buyers to source at the parallel or black market. This causes a strain and leads to a massive divergence between the official and parallel. Lamido Sanusi said the differential should never be more than 3%. It is now over 60%.

No sane person or corporation will sell their dollars at the official rate, worsening the scarcity. It is the present artificial scarcity that has reduced monthly spend to $10.

I think the Naira's true value is around ₦500-₦550. To achieve that , all the CBN has to do is to devalue the official rate of the Naira to ₦500. The CBN now restarts the sale of $20,000 per BDC weekly. This would flood the parallel market with dollars forcing its valued to rise. I'm certain it would hit around around ₦510.

Even if it does not hit the desired mark, if the country reduced the amount spent on subsidizing fuel by increasing the price to around ₦350 per litre, this can help improve the Naira further.

Emefiele was fairly during alright as the CBN governor before PMB mounted office. He oversaw the gradual depreciation of the Naira from 155 to a dollar in June 2014 to around ₦200 by May 2015 despite crude oil prices falling from a high of over $100 per barrel to $50.

Emefiele's fault was that he refused to tell the president off. The CBN has autonomy and he has the authority to prevent political meddling. Sadly, he lacked the backbone to do so and for over 7 years, the economy has paid the price.
