lack of maintenance. Only Nigeria builds and thinks what they built will maintain itself.

I can bet that maintenance wasn't included in the planning stages OR someone is eating the maintenance money.

Corruption has finished Nigeria in every way.

Look at what people and investments have to suffer because of corruption.

You just read headline and rushed to come and comment.
Pls explain the maintenance you are talking about. What has corruption got to do with the story?

Yes, swampy terrain but not under water.

$140 million
Something they should have invested in Crypto or Forex
If we all invested our money in crypto, who would feed you? Bitcoin? You also do realize that some peope bought BTC at over $50-60k and it's currently less than $20k, right? Not forgetting those whose assets lost over 90%. If the whole world is only driven by greed and numerical values in a computer, we'd all eat each other.

This is not a good news at all.
This is a huge loss to the investors , Nigeria and a sign of looming famine and high cost of food .
Prudent leaders and leadership is what we need in our nation to prudently manage scarce resources and cushion such loss.
Vote wisely . Don't sell your future for rice , beans or recharge card.

Why is everything politicised. Is this not a natural disaster? Does advanced countries not experience such? Na wa for una oo. Abi uno get TV? U didn't se the German flooding, the hurricanes in America or wildfires... Abeg carry una bad belle for Nigeria shift.. This is no one's fault. Whether leaders or followers.. It s a natural disaster it happens..

I fail to see the problem here, rice thrives in swampy terrain.

Googled article has this statement, quote, "Rice is a crop that can flourish in flooded soils, whereas many other plants will die, so flooding of rice paddies is an important way to control weeds in rice fields. However, even rice plants can suffer yield loss or die if the water is too deep for a long time."

The question then is, how flooded were the actual rice paddies - the vid wasn't entirely clear - and if the flooded area depicted in the vid is the actual rice fields, then how long it remains submerged.

I think you are the aloof one here. You read the story, but didn't comprehend the mechanics of the structure

Name one thing we maintain in Nigeria if not corruption. I will wait.

Didn't you hear about the seams having problems and other effects that screams lack of maintenance.

You read it but it went over your head.

since you went under your head, you still havent answered the simple question.

What has corruption got to do with the story?

where did you "hear" about the seams? was it on nairaland? does nairaland have audio that you talking about hearing?

where in the story was it stated that the seams had problems? what type of problems? how does the so called problems automatically "screams lack of maintenance"?

Rice doesn’t mind plenty of water or even being under for a while, the problem is prolonged swamping

I'd wanted to break it down to you in details but I don't think you are worth my effort. I will just say this to you, go and do your own research about dikes if you are not aware, then factor it to the location where this incident happened. Don't you think that if maintenance was done and bypass lines were clear and functional, then the pressure wouldn't cause all this damage.

part of research is asking questions which i have asked you but so far, you cant answer. if you have done your research, then answering the simple questions shouldnt be a problem for you.

Those are the fields. After being submerged in water for 2 whole weeks and still counting, I am not sure that the leaves will not rot.
