I do not believe colonialism is a reason why Africans are poor. Infact, it should be a reason why Africans or black nations should be rich. Colonialism brought about orderliness, massive infrastructural developments. As a matter of fact, most of the federal roads we have in Nigeria are the ones paved and constructed by the whites. Every subsequent government only renovates it.

This was Lagos during colonialism.

And please, don’t talk about increase in population. It has nothing to do with orderliness and development. We are our own problems. Yes the westerners add to it, but that’s because we invite them either through our actions or inactions. Today, Jamaica and Canada, are still under the United Kingdom with the Queen as their head of state, but check out the difference between the two countries.

According to trading economics, Nigeria is expected to earn $250b in 2020 and projected to be up to $450b in 2021 and 2022, yet every year, we borrow money from China even to pay salaries! The investigations by the senate and other revelations have shown how much wealth is being looted by government officials! Imagine how far the economy would have spurred if these monies were actually invested in infrastructural development or other factors of the economy.

I read in one of the answers, someone said China is taking over Zambia’s international airport. Well, China lent money to Zambia and they failed to meet up with the payment. What do you expect?

Until African countries begin to look inward for their own progress, they’ll always be ‘the other people’, poor and debtors. AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH COLONIALISM.
This is Lagos now.

In other words, “Are the events of 1880 to 1960 the main reason Africa is poor today?” And the answer is NO!!! Africa is poor today because of Africa’s failure to manage her resources! And the aim of the pictures attached is to illustrate the difference between the orderliness during colonialism as against the chaos we have today, portraying my initial statement that colonialism should actually be a reason why Africa should be rich if we continued on the good strides the whites left us, like infrastructure, etc.

People post this picture to show that 'lagos was orderly' but what they're not willing to have the intelligence to find out is that it's easy to be orderly when almost nobody in the country has or can afford a vehicle. How many people were driving in this time? Also, this picture is from after colonialism lol

Africans hardly give back to the community. They prefer to be the only man standing. It's very not the entertainment sector that is trying to spread wealth among talented individuals especially in Nigeria.

It is true. It’s why I get vexed when Afrocentrists/ Pan Africanists state that “the reason the West is rich and Africa is poor is because they looted the resources” They make it seem as if Africa was some sort of haven before Europeans arrived. They also act like the resources that the west “looted” from them that they would have made good use of it. Even if the West never colonised Africa, All the natural resources they took from Africa would just have been looted by the elites of Africa. Africans wouldn’t have used those resources to anywhere near the extent that the west has used it to develop their society, not by any stretch of imagination. 21st century economics is not about the resources you have. It’s about how you use them. It’s about creating demand for a good or service. The West didn’t just become rich. They industrialised centuries ago. Westerners use that bit of matter between their ears to get to where they are now. Look at Ethiopia and Liberia, It was never colonised but still poor as Bleep. Who there’s to blame now?

Are those not cars to you?
Also,in a disordered environment, the traffic wouldn't be this streamlined.

I beg to differ slightly. Africa is poor not necessarily because it failed to manage its natural resources, but because it failed to manage its natural resources. We rely too heavily on natural resources which in reality cannot by itself make any country rich. Japan has no natural resources, but is one of the top 6 or 7 economies I the world. Switzeland is a mountainous landlocked country with no natural resources, but its one of the top 10 economies by GDP per capita ranking. Congo Has about every natural resource in the world, but among the poorest nation on the planet.

Black Africas' major problems are the forcing of disparate and heterogeneous groups/ethnicities together in the same country; the replacing of neocolonialism with colonialism; and the rise of a oppresive indigenous political ruling class who suddenly came into so much wealth, power and privilege when the colonialists left and imbibed the oppressive mindset of their former colonial masters! As the colonialists left in the 60s, the black African political class moved into the recently vacated mansions and GRAs of their former colonial masters, and this was bound to have some kind of negative effect on their pysche!
