Not anymore the fools were given 60m dollars after they had paid Orange (France) 250M dollars for the stake - they kept crying- and Telkom now is back as SOE - because gov say it's strategic asset.

Their Helios divestment from Equity group to Telkom kenya will go down in history as one of most boneheaded investment decision ever - not only did they lose huge opportunity in Equity (One of Africa fastest bank) - but they have also literally thrown 200M dollars down the drain.

The Treasury has acquired a 60 percent stake in Telkom Kenya from UK-based private equity fund, Helios Investment Partners, for Sh6.09 billion, making the company fully State-owned.

Kenya has 200 5G sites by now. Recently Nokia and Safaricom completed Africa’s first Fixed Wireless Access 5G slicing trial - which allows network to be split/sliced for target users/app.

Kenya remember is heading to a million Fiber to Home. Nigeria doesnt even have 100K. Meaning majority of you are connected to Nairaland through mobile broadband - while most kenyans have fiber to home.

Shaytun:
Stop smoking Igbo.

In August 2019, the broadband coverage was 33.7% and today it is 44.65%, representing close to 13 million new broadband users. There were 13,823 4G base stations and we now have 36,751, representing a 165.86% increase.

“The percentage of 4G coverage across the country also increased from 23% to 77.52%. The expansion has also been helped by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy directly engaging the.”

He then spoke about Nigeria’s 5G ambition, pointing out the benefits of the fifth-generation network and how it will contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.

“We now have Presidential approval for the 5G policy. In terms of density, 4G allows connection to about 1 million devices in 500 square kilometers, while 5G will allow the same number of devices in just 1 square kilometer. There are also very fast data rates of the 5G and more efficient energy usage.”

Again remember these magic words always - Kenya has a resilient well diversified economy - that has breezed through global crisis - before and the current one will just pass - and will continue to grow. Our macro-economic fundamentals speak for themselves. Having base interest rate of 7.5% alone should shut you, underlying inflation has never gone beyond 6%, overaly inflation still single digit. Minerals are source of weakness - not strength.
obaaderemi:
Kenya is lost. The post-covid issues will continue to mess up Kenya for a long time to come. Debt keeps rising, inflation is rising, climate change is affecting the country worse than most other African countries, the ksh is going down, etc. And you can't expect them to have a boom from any minerals. Minerals wouldn't really matter but in a continent like Africa where hci and investments are low, minerals matter. They absorb some of the shock.

There are times when I wonder if these little Indians have any brains in their heads, especially the gallipig guy. grin Helios, the Nigerian company has been raping Kenya for a long time. Their divestment from Telkom Kenya is a blessing to them and a big loss to Kenyan government and taxpayers.

How much did Helios
pay France Telecom?
The details of the
transaction were not made public. But
from the available documents, we know
that, as part of the transaction, Helios
bought and took over shareholder loans,
which France Telecom had extended to
Telkom Kenya at a consideration of Sh1
(one shilling).

Flipped for no value
Then, the shareholder loans amounted to
$199 million (Sh24 billion). There was
another important detail on that complex
transaction: Helios then transferred 40
per cent of that liability to the
government for a nominal consideration
of Sh1. Simultaneously, Helios also
transferred 10 per cent of its shares to
the government for a nominal
consideration of Sh1. That is how the
government’s stake moved from 30 per
cent to 40 per cent. Shares were being
flipped for literally no value.

The big question here is this: What has
the taxpayer earned from these complex
transactions? Zero.
First, the government
is given 10 per cent of the company for
Sh1. In the fine print of the deal, the
taxpayer is made to assume a liability of
circa $80 million (Sh9.6 billion).
The foreign investor sits pretty because
he can make billions from repayments of
interest on the dollar shareholder loans
he has advanced to Telkom and from
stripping it of valuable assets.
The Nigerians played a smart one on the Kenyans again. Helios got the company for a song, sold valuable assets and sold the shell to the government. grin grin

Then you don't know anything about investments. Helios made money from the Equity deal and cashed out to spread its funds more across Africa. There's nothing Nigerians can learn from little Indians in terms of investment skills. By the time Helios left Equity, they had made their money back in multiple folds and it was time to move on to other things like Telkom Kenya where they made a killing again. grin You must wonder why Nigerians are buying up and selling Kenyan firms. The Nigerians see Kenya as low hanging fruit. grin Read this:

The value of Helios’ stake in Equity grew
exponentially during the seven years it
was in the bank, forcing it to rely on deep-
pocketed buyers for a smooth exit.

“Helios’s shares were seen as an overhang
(a sizeable block of shares which, if
released in the market in one go, would
flood it and push prices downward). They
have surprisingly managed to sell at a
premium on the market
(NSE) price,” Mr
Mwangi said.
That second bolded, how did the Nigerians achieve that? grin Wow, you have a lot to learn, little Indians.

I think it's the Kenyan populace that is guilty of what you say. Why do you find it hard to speak against your oppressors the Kenyan government? Even on this thread we have seen several Nigerians talk against the Nigerian government. Why are Kenyans reluctant to do same, that's if you are a little Indian?

My brother this is just not it. I've not interacted with Kenyans enough to understand their situation but I've witnessed the progress of countries like Tanzania and Ethiopia and I want to believe this is the case for all the other East African nations. I'm of the understanding that this countries are pulling together for a federation that will span from the East to the West Coast creating a land bridge for global trade. You're equally smart and I think you know what this means for the federation and the continent in whole. Yet when I look over to the West I'm lost for words. Why stick with retrogressive leaders who've been pulling you back since independence. The crop of leaders in your respective countries don't inspire any hope in me.

Oga, you are more probably than not, a little Indian. Ethiopia that's gone to the dogs is the country you are hyping here. Or Kenya with its slums and consistent starvation. East Africa is far poorer than West Africa. East Africa is hungrier than West Africa, so what are you saying?

Investing in Equity was smart - Investing whopping 250M in Telkom was dumb - and they have cried for years - I suspect they bribed Uhuru in the last days of his regime to buy them out - 60B - that is 200M dollars down - without even factoring the opportunity cost.

Again understand how such funds work - the money doesnt belong to Nigeria or Nigerians - this investment fund - they need to make money for their investors in London. Their play is Africa - but when they start burning money like in Telkom Kenya - then you know they will not only close shop - but will malign africa as investment destination for other such funds.

I hope new gov can offer incentive for this and scale it up.
I think there is another that already in business - they own the batteries - as that is main fear.
We can lead Africa in this - if gov seriously invest in this.
