Look like they actually paid the French some serious money smiley smiley smiley - There is always a bigger fool - paid 600M dollars (exchange rate of that time) - and now they taken 50M dollars smiley smiley.

They sold Equity for 52B kshs - and put the same on Telkom Kenya.

https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/business/financial-standard/article/2000182779/what-the-exit-of-orange-yumobile-tells-us-about-kenyas-telecoms-scene
The value of the deal remains a closely guarded secret for now. “Unfortunately, they are not commenting on the transaction at this stage,” said Helios’ PR handlers FTI Consulting. However, sources estimate the deal to be worth about Sh50 billion. The figure is Sh24 billion more than what the Frenchmen paid ($390 million or Sh26 billion) in 2007 to acquire 51 per cent of Telkom Kenya. In the sale, the source told Business Beat that as part of the deal, the new owners are expected to take up Telkom Kenya’s debts accumulated over the years.

Although the actual amount pocketed by Orange is unknown for now, close industry observers believe the deal brokered by the French company amounted to a hefty profit that could cover losses it incurred over the eight years since it started operations. However, Treasury is the biggest loser in the deal having seen its stake diluted from 49 per cent to 30 per cent, even though it has over time injected billions of shillings to keep the operator afloat. Also, Telkom Kenya has lost key assets.
You are quite obtuse. The French and the Nigerians only came to cheat Kenya. Read the bolded. Kenya's taxpayers money was used to run that company and you people according to your own source are the biggest losers. And the last part says the company lost valuable assets.
Concerning Equity deal, the Nigerians divested because they've made their returns in multiple folds, so it was time to cashout and spread their money. It matters little to them that equity is now bigger. There's a plan for everything. When you need your money you sell your shares to raise money.

Treasury made it's money long time ago.
Telkom started Safaricom...gov spinned off Safaricom and left Telkom with more liabilities than assets.
Now French got duped...they not only invested 390M to buy a dead thing...they didnt make a single profit....and they re-invested alot of money.
Gov refused to invest....therefore Orange shareholding grew to 70% from 50%.
Then stupid Nigerians came....they bought it for 500-600M...now have sold it for 50m under the cloud of secrecy - perhaps they bribed.
Remember to keep Telkom as going concern require lots of money.
Assest solds are re-invested to pay debts and salaries..NOBODY cash out from a dead thing. It just not possible.
The shareholders are last people to cash out.
Helios never cashed out anything except this 50m cheque... I hope they got the cheque because Ruto could as well refuse to pay
From 600m to 50m in about 10yrs smiley smiley
The worst investment decision ever.

Scrapping the bottom of the barrel. Kenya led in digital economy by far in many parameters.

Cyrptos

Kenya has the largest share of its population with cryptocurrencies in Africa, says the United Nations, pointing to the country’s exposure to the ongoing meltdown in the crypto market.

A report by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) says that 8.5 percent of the population or 4.25 million people own cryptocurrencies in the country.
This places Kenya ahead of developed economies such as the United States, which is ranked sixth with 8.3 percent of its population owning digital currencies.

War-torn Ukraine is ranked top, with 12.7 percent share of its population with cryptocurrencies, followed by Russia (11.9 percent), Venezuela (10.3 percent) and Singapore (9.4 percent
Wow! On the surface unbelievable but knowing another side of Kenya just from this thread it's NOT surprising at all.

Ati failed terribly, you must be high on some luo drugs .The Lagos BRT achieved socio-economic, environmental and public health success, feasibility, as well as cost-effectiveness by starting small in line with the capacity of public and private actors involved. Within the first one hundred days, the BRT led system had carried over 9.7 million passengers. same goes to DAR BRT systems

Don't ever post these things. Especially the last project.
You started constructing your blue rail system in 2011, 11yrs ago. Yet still no signs of completion.
A mere 27km of rail infrastructure (electric or not) should not go past 2yrs. This is a clear indication of a failed state. A zoo.
We did expressway in less than 1.5 yrs. Expressway is more complex, expensive, and labor-intensive than the $1.2B stretch of a rail line.
This documentary was reliesed in 2020, two yrs ago before the expressway break its ground.

Another 589km masterclass rail infrastructure that took only 4 and a half years to be completed.
China Communications Construction Company, the project kicked off in December 2014, and was completed two and a half years ahead of schedule. It was officially opened in May 2017. The SGR was shortlisted by American engineering magazine Engineering News-Record as the world’s best railway project in 2018.

Each SGR freight train has a capacity of 4,000 tons and can carry 108 TEUs. Their maximum speed is 80 kilometers per hour. Each passenger train can carry 1,096 people and the maximum speed is 120 kilometers per hour. By June 30, 2019, the SGR had transported 3 million passengers and 5 million tons of freight in 761 days of safe operation. At present, the SGR operates 4 passenger trains and 14 freight trains daily, with the average occupancy rate of the passenger trains being over 90 percent.

More than 300 local enterprises and 1,200 local suppliers participated in the construction of the SGR, together creating more than 46,000 direct and indirect jobs. More than 90 percent of the employees are locals. The project has also trained 5,000 local person

Kenya is lost. The post-covid issues will continue to mess up Kenya for a long time to come. Debt keeps rising, inflation is rising, climate change is affecting the country worse than most other African countries, the ksh is going down, etc. And you can't expect them to have a boom from any minerals. Minerals wouldn't really matter but in a continent like Africa where hci and investments are low, minerals matter. They absorb some of the shock.
I'm taking a risk knowingly engaging a professional Makoko danfo man but nigga do you know what this chart means!?

That's your OFFICIAL rate! The real rate has broken 700!

Those who know say it may well fall off a cliff.

The naira is floating, indeed, tumbling freely with no hold based on positive economic imperatives. There is apprehension that except there is a complete turnaround, the naira might plummet to N1000/$1.
https://guardian.ng/opinion/any-red-line-for-the-falling-naira/

Luckily people apart from your mental age mates on this thread can see the obvious major takeaways of the writeup.

The floating of the naira has triggered the worst economic downturn since the end of the Nigerian Civil War.
Even the aviation biz you were prematurely nutting over is DOA.

From the aviation industry is the fact that no less than 14 foreign airlines have shut down their operations in Nigeria due to the rising cost, low patronage, low profit and harsh operating environment
Ohh,Naij! SIGHHHH!?

You cannot compare this to a BRT system

there are dirty matatu's and there are clean matatu's as well. The point here is both matatu's and Danfo fall under the same classification

What's special in BRT buses? If you ask me I'll tell you that BRT buses are nonsense without the special lanes. Put a BRT bus and a Matatu in the same condition and you will see Matatu outperforming BRT buses hands down.

Both Dar and Lagos BRT systems failed terribly. There is no inspiration that one can get from them. Kenyan media outlet used to compare Tanzanian BRT with local transport but since they realized its failure, they stopped comparing Tanzanian BRT to Matatu.
You can try to bury your head on a sand, but the truth is Dar BRT have won some global transportation awards, even your fellow Kenyans are admiring our BRT

Don't think like a two year old.
There is no beauty in calamities. Mount Longonot, Mt. kenya, and many more were all active volcanic mountains - (only good for geographers and scientists but not for the country and any human,) luckily, they are now dormant. Just like floods, earthquakes, and tsunamis; Calamities are more detrimental and catastrophic to human beings' lifestyles.

Please, don't hype calamities.
