Even when I signed up on credit karma, I used just last 4 of my SSN and date of birth to validate my identity thereby answering some security questions. You could even use your address and last 4 SSN for identity verification.

You are not getting the point. Credit karma, credit sesame etc will ask you to verify your records. But they can never quote it in a letter meant for an outside person like the one they wrote to David.
