North’s Oil Find Controversy by ItsTutsi(op): 11:13am On Nov 28, 2022
IF Nigeria weren’t a country whose fault lines have been exacerbated, the reported discovery and commencement of drilling of one billion barrel crude oilfield and 500 billion cubic feet of gas reserves in the Kolmani fields, should be cheering news for a country that depends almost exclusively on crude oil exports for its foreign exchange earnings.

This discovery, as reported by President Muhammadu Buhari who doubles as Minister of Petroleum Resources, might increase Nigeria’s crude oil reserve to 38 billion barrels, while morphing our erstwhile 180,000,000 million cubic foot gas fields considerably. It also brightens the prospects for other inland frontier oilfields such as the Anambra, Sokoto, Bida, and Lake Chad.

With the refinery, gas plants, power plants, and other industrial facilities already earmarked around this site, which is lodged between Bauchi and Gombe States, it could offer thousands, if not millions, of Nigerians gainful employment directly and indirectly. It might bring more revenue to the federal and concerned state governments, attract investment, extend our energy base, and bring petroleum products closer to people across the North.

Many experts, however, have continued to express their doubts as to the reality of this oil find. Issues of transparency, viability, regional agenda, and even security, continue to plague it.

While flagging off drilling about a fortnight ago, Buhari merely claimed that the project had attracted three billion dollar investments, without disclosing the details.

The involvement of the New Nigeria Development Company Ltd., owned by the 19 Northern States, in this project marks the first time a regional body has got involved in the upstream sector of our oil industry. Our 64-year-old oil industry in the Niger Delta offers no such privilege to the nine oil producing states of the Niger Delta.

This gives the Northern States residual “resource control” from day one of oil production in the North, while the Niger Delta oil states are paid derivation funds along with the interventions of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

From his body language at the flag-off, Buhari, who had been obsessed with oil finds in the North for over 40 years, feels a sense of accomplishment with the commencement of the reported Kolmani oil drilling. Unless there is a hidden agenda, Nigerians have the right to know everything about this oil facility.

Refinery, gas plant and power plant is being earmarked to be constructed around d kolmani oil well sites. This is a welcome development but my question is why is such facility not built around oil wells found in akwaibom and other South south oil producing states. But rather they went to kaduna and lagos to build refinery while the oils from the south is transfered via pipelines to other regions for refining.

Listen Lagos state and Dangote got authorization to build a refinery, Anambra got authorization to build international airport. Lagos state is about building another port in Badagry, they just finished building one in Lekki... What I'm saying is stop saying "they built, they built" hold your governors responsible, only wike has used Niger Delta oil money well though he didn't do something that the people really need, like laying a foundation at least for a refinery, or building a port, or reviving an existing port, rivers money should be able to build port or refinery.

You now know that the federal government is not holding governor or legislator back from doing the right thing for their people. It's time to hold these people accountable. Stop blaming Buhari or FG for everything

Guy you don't understand... Does Calabar and Rivers have governors? Do they each senators, do they have HOR? Did the government or Calabar or Rivers tried to revitalize any of the mentioned port and got block by the FG... See for our own sakes let's play good politics. Osun state government got private investors to work on the gold mines in the state, Zamfara did the same but many of us don't think no one is holding our governors back.

How much is Lagos State money in Dangote refinery
How much is Bauchi and Gombe contributing for this oil find?
The two functional ports in Lagos, what is Lagos State's contribution towards their operation?
Stop telling lies

I don't understand you... Those are private investment... Firstly vote in a candidate that can create an enabling environment for business to thrive, build infrastructures, then you as citizens behave well and be friendly to the foreign investors and investments and see how your state will strive... Security, infrastructure and good policies drives investments in state... This things you will understand if you can remove bias and study how lagos was planned to be where it is today... Your governor must be able to woo investors. One mistake we make in this country is, instead of appointing business men with friends world wide that can invite the business friends and colleagues to come and invest in the state, we vote the most popular person a party as to offer and then we start throwing all sorts of blames and excuses for the useless government we are supposed to chase out

How did Lagos state govt create an enabling environment for business to thrive? Which infrastructure did they build? Lagos has always been the top nvestment destination in Nigeria regardless of state govt or whatever. Besides, FDI to Lagos has dropped just as it dropped nationally. Do we also interpret that to mean Lagos state govt has destroyed the business environment and the citizens are no longer friendly to foreign investors?
Lagos was mostly planned by the FG while a capital. That planning still exists till today. No major change has taken place in its plan since 1991.
Who are the "we" who voted popular persons as against a businessman in 2019? You all just keep on making spurious assumptions based on the unique capabilities of Lagos. Mind you, Lagos is not even the most industrialized state according to statistics, it is Ogun state. If so, Osoba, Gbenga Daniel, Amosun etc deserve to be president more than anyone else.
If the Lagos model works so well, can you explain why it did not work out in Osun state where proteges of Lagos landlord ruled for 12 years and threw the state into financial despondency
