*First Anniversary of Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport*

By Paul Nwosu

The First Anniversary of Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport, Umueri is at once a cause for celebration and sober reflection.
It calls for celebration that such a magnificent edifice could be built against all odds, especially as the Covid-19 pandemic raged on and successfully began flight operations on December 7, 2021. The brand new airport built under administration of the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, remarkably recorded 142 flights carrying 3,865 passengers in its first month of operation. The airport has ever since waxed quite strong by serving as a well-facilitated conduit for ferrying passengers ever since its commencement of flight activities. It especially saved the highly itinerant Anambra commerce-oriented people the trouble of having to travel to Asaba, Enugu or Owerri to catch flights to their business destinations.

The sober reflection on Anambra International Airport is that it is as yet a work in progress. The necessary hope is anchored on the multiform plans Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, has in place of turning the airport into an international showpiece for passengers and cargo haulage. Mr. Governors design of an Anambra Emporium for exports bears the imprimatur of the Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport.

Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike has given the promise that regular international flights may commence at the turn of the New Year. She disclosed that discussions are ongoing with some airlines in France, Germany and the United States for the commencement of the international flight operations.
In this busy Christmas season, the domestic passenger airlines, Air Peace and United Nigeria Airline, are busy flying full schedules into and out of Anambra State.

On the planned international front, initial studies have shown that from Anambra to Miami in the USA is just about eight hours of flight time. Transport Commissioner Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike said: We are engaging with the airlines to find out ways we can make it possible for airlines to carry passengers from Anambra to Miami directly.”

It is a universally known fact that commerce is the second name of Ndi-Anambra who are always open for business. Through the airport, Anambra businessmen and women are ready to build relationships and interface with their contemporaries around the world.

On the part of the government, Mrs. Igwebuike stressed: We are also looking for partners from airports around the world. We are new, and the advantage of being new is that we get to do things in line with international best practices. We are looking for investors and experts that will assist us in capacity-building. Also, we want to grow our revenue base.”

The Anambra aviation authorities are in advanced discussions with many local and international airlines, and Commissioner Igwebuike assures that “we are doing things systematically and learning from those who are already in the system. We do not believe in reinventing the wheel.” Mrs. Igwebuike further said: We have engaged with some companies in France, Munich, and now we are engaging the Maimi Dade County. We will seek a partnership or some sort of collaboration. We are going to acquire all the necessary footprints to make ourselves known.”

The grand plan is to make the Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport commercially viable. Through the Anambra Emporium, export revenue will start flowing into the state through the vast riches of exportation via the airport. Being in its first year, the airport is still in the process of growth. In due course, it will break even.

According to Commissioner Igwebuike, We have generated revenue from the airport for the government of the state. It is very promising from the way we are going and when we grow it the way we want to grow it, both the commercial arm and others, it will be self-sustaining. That is where we are going.”

The Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport is indeed an idea whose time has come.

Las Las, we all should be very GRATEFUL to Obiano for his giant strides in Anambra.

I can confidently say that he would probably be the most development-minded, critical thinker that ever occupied government house Awka. The only thing was that Obiano was not a noise maker and did not use the media to hype himself.

All the same, I am grateful for the magnificent work he did in Anambra state!

Good news all round sha! however talk of international flights seem premature to me! The government should work hard to make a good airport even better by completing and upgrading the existing facilities......the aero bridge, aviation fuel tank farm, facilitating the air peace flight school...etc When the time for international flights comes...Houston maybe a far better destination......before that they should try to get air peace to make the airport a hub for domestic flights or even a sub regional hub for flights into central and east Africa.

Exactly! Though i feel things will really kick off at the airport when the new gov't (hopefully a Obi presidency) resumes next year! This present gov't just doesn't seem interested, and it's like any little concessions they give, you have to first send a delegation to go beg them in Abuja....Hadi Sirika is not proactively engaged in seeing the airport grows and thrives to its full capacity!

The avio-bridges should have been installed by now. Surprised there's no recent clips showing this....as well as other aspects and surroundings of the airport so we can see if they've done the landscaping as adviced.

Would have thought the far-east....specifically China, would have been a much more viable international route to start off with, then other routes like Miami and Houston could follow.

Would like to see the latest airport passenger and aircraft traffic figures for 2022. I expect the new airport to show some impressive numbers, even with it presently just operating local flights.

Governor Soludo should engage investors for at least two new terminal buildings: one for cargo and another for international flights while the present one is reserved for local operations. Gov't should also think of linking the airport by rail with the three major cities in the state. These could be done on a PPP or BOT basis, or even use diaspora funding.

that rail link suggestion is a "killer app"! Ndigbo are truly gifted in metallurgy but the naive and indolent federal governments of Nigeria have never really bothered to develop such innate skills....the institute of metallurgy in Obosi is under-funded like most National institutions...being domiciled in the southeast just makes its fate worse...............Can anambra state develop and attract investment in materials and metals......we can fabricate rail lines and pipelines as well !
why can't we design and build our own rail lines,if Oilserve can design, engineer and commission multi billion dollar pipeline networks........I do not see why we cannot design and build a 20 km rail line between the airport and onitsha..........na to assemble the requisite talent! we have hundreds of hardcore engineers like Sir Emeka okwuosa of Oilserve, who probably has the best Engineering design bureaus in his Frazimex group! Thankfully Soludo is against the idea of saving money. Anambra has so far received over 1 billion extra revenue from 13% derivation courtesy of Obiano. The man really loves and meant well for the state. God bless Willie Obiano and help Soludo to continue with these high ambitions.

This is the President of African Export–Import Bank (AFREXIM), Dr. Benedict Okey Oramah who is from Anamrba State. Listen as he revealed the sad reason why Anambra lost billions naira investment to Ogun State.

Just for a moment imagine what this coud;e done to the economy of Onitsha and Asaba. But because of some illiterate Nwa Boi who has this utopia that they can gain independence by attacking security outfits and personel in AlaIgbo.

Tomorrow we will say there is no job, but we are using our hands to destroy.

Frustrated Aba pig, you should be more concerned that Abia is about to repeat the mistake they made in electing Ikpeazu, Orji kalu and TA Orji as governors of the worst and most backward state in Nigeria which is Abia state.

Instead of you to start by now to kick that abia should get it right in the next poll, you are busy digging for video somewhere to divert attention on the mess called abia state.

Instead of you to be more concerned that aba is a cesspit of a dilapidated failed town ravaged by dilapidated muddy roads and filthy environment and umuahia has remained a glorified village, rather you are worried about a progressive Anambra that has thrice the economy of Abia state.

There's nothing wrong with igboland, but there's everything wrong with Abia state. Focus on getting a good leader because almost all the states in igboland has relatively good leaders unlike your cursed backward useless shithole abia state.

Very soon ebonyi will have an airport but abia has remained a local dirty failed state with neither roads not airport. You should be hiding simply because you are from Abia.

At least Anambra is generating IGR that's thrice bigger than your backward useless worthless shithole abia state. When shall you question your useless leaders in abia that has kept your abia state as the worst and most backward state in Nigeria. Ikpeazu has wasted almost 8yrs doing almost nothing, now he has turned a PA to Wike while Abia state remained useless and backward with almost nothing to show except bad roads and filthy environment.

Ogun got a lot of investments because of geography. If anyone thinks it's anything else they either don't know geography or are being willfully blind.

People just want to bend reality to sentiment. How many police check points were on SE roads before 'illiterate nwa boy' and how do you believe this effects business? Some ppl want to live in their emotions and chattering like an August meeting
