Why Have Many Nigerian Lawyers Now Become Scammers? Why??

So have you been scammed by a Nigerian lawyer before? Have you been scammed of your money by a Nigerian lawyer before? Please don't hide it anymore. Share your experiences. Share it on this thread right now. Please don't suffer in silence anymore.

Share your experience of being deceived and scammed by the person who is supposed to protect you and fight for you.

Let us all join hands together to uproot evil lawyers from our legal system in Nigeria. Enough is enough.

We are supposed to be protected by lawyers, but not in Nigeria because Nigerian lawyers have now become scammers. The person who is supposed to protect you and fight for you will end up harming you, scamming you and even intimidating you and threatening you to keep silent. But we can't keep silent anymore. We must speak up and expose evil people in Nigeria, no matter how long it takes. No matter who they are.

As far as I'm concerned, when we remove politicians, there are two most important people, that are very important, that should protect the people, without which a nation will be in trouble. They are, number one; a soldier, and number two; a lawyer. So in Nigeria at least we can trust the Nigerian army not to disappoint the people, they are trying their best, but can we trust lawyers? Why have lawyers become so fraudulent, scammers and untrustworthy? So if the last hope of the common man is broken, then where will the common man run to for succor?

The legal practitioners act of Nigeria stipulates that as a lawyer, you must not disclose the secrets of your client or whatever your client tells you about his or her case to anybody, not even your own wife. But that's only in the book, not so in practice with Nigerian lawyers.

A Nigerian lawyer will secretly and stylishly disclose your secrets which you told him to another person. Or he tells his wife and his wife tells her friend and her friends spread your secrets at the hair dressing salon. And your secret will be out in the newspapers tomorrow morning. That's a Nigerian lawyer for you.

Your secret is never safe with a Nigerian lawyer. It's better you carry a megaphone and stand in the market place and broadcast your secrets out to the whole market than to tell it to a Nigerian lawyer expecting that it will be kept secret. You're on a long thing. Just be rest assured that the whole world will hear it soon.

A Nigerian lawyer will even disclose your secrets to your enemies or opponents and join them to fight you. This is somebody you paid to fight for you, but he will collect money from your opponent/enemy and join hands with them to start fighting you. Evil lawyers are too many in Nigeria. Yet the legal practitioners disciplinary committee or the Nigerian Bar Association will not do anything to these evil lawyers because everybody has been compromised. Oh Nigeria my country!!

If I begin to write every abnormal thing and scams that Nigerian lawyers do, I will keep writing for 6 months nonstop and it will never end. They are so many, so many, so so many and uncountable. So they thought people don't know or that the people are ignorant of the law or that only them know the law or that the people who they are deceiving are so dumb that they don't know their rights as Nigerian citizens.

The problem with Nigerians is that they are too afraid to speak up when they are being intimidated, scammed or deceived. Just like Fela said, suffering and smiling. That's what Nigerians do. Suffering and smiling. Oh Nigeria my country!! It's such a pity.

So you now walk into a law chambers and pay your lawyer to deliver a service to you, he fails to render the service to you and he refused to refund your money and begins to intimidate you and threaten you because he is a lawyer and you are now afraid of him and you keep quiet and forget about the money. Suffering and smiling. But when Buhari does any little thing you will call him all kinds of negative names and abuse him. But see your evil lawyer who is a thief and a criminal and who duped you of your money, you cannot do anything to him or charge him to court because you are afraid.

Let me tell you that as a non lawyer, you can jail your lawyer if he has committed a crime or fraud against you and if you have evidence and can prove it. There's not much difference between you and a lawyer if you are well educated and if you know your rights as a Nigerian citizen. The fact that he is a lawyer does not make him above the law neither does it give him the guarantee to commit crime, to scam you or to defraud you of your money. It's because of evil lawyers like these, that have made the Nigerian legal system backward, because they are the ones conniving and conspiring to frustrate cases and turn cases upside down.

So I gave you money as my lawyer to deliver a service to me, you refused to deliver the service, or delivered it reluctantly and very unsatisfactory and even compounded the case instead of solving the matter, you made it even worse, do you expect me to be happy with you? When I now have to hire another lawyer and pay double or triple money, do you expect me to be happy with you? And you refused to refund my money and started intimidating me, manipulating me and threatening me? Just because you are a lawyer, what kind of evil scammer lawyer are you??

And many people in Nigeria are in my shoes who have had very terrible experiences in the hands of Nigerian lawyers but they can't even speak up. Speak up now, don't be afraid of any lawyer because there's nothing they can do to you. Speak up my people, let's expose evil lawyers so that the good ones can thrive and flourish. Because any good lawyer can never find fault with what I'm saying. But I know the evil ones will surely be very angry and mad with what I've written. But I don't even care.

And if any evil lawyer comes here on this thread to tell me nonsense, to try to manipulate me or try to threaten me in any way whatsoever, or try to deny these things I've written that they are not true, if you provoke me, I will even make sure I spread it all over the internet and I will make sure I write a book about it and circulate it all over the world about the evil of Nigerian lawyers and how they have now become scammers.

Ok let me refresh your memory a little bit. Do you remember a company called Transberg, a transport company in Agege that came up sometime ago? They promised heaven and earth, asked people to invest money. We invested. They later collapsed. They were supported by lawyers. My money is still there up till now. All of us that invested. Up till now I've not heard anything about them. All my money gone down the drain. All supported by lawyers who are their backers.

Do you remember an entity called Bethany? Another fake so called company that purportedly came from Ibadan to Lagos, even with a lawyer and a law chambers backing them, they came to Lagos and went on radio to deceive Nigerians that they were genuine and that people should buy their forms and that people will be given World Bank free grant of Ten million naira, which we later discovered it was all lies. To the extent that the law chambers backing them even gave people receipt of payment with their chambers logo and letterhead. But all these things were just to deceive people and to scam them and continue scamming them of their hard earned money. Up till now, nobody has gotten a dime from that so-called fake company Bethany. And they were all backed by lawyers and championed by lawyers. So Nigerian lawyers have now become scammers. Oh Nigeria my country!!

Do you remember the late Oko Oloyun Worldwide? The herbal man or herbal medicine practitioner that was assassinated few years ago? He was so popular all over Nigeria and I recently read in the news that his wife had remarried another man. Do you know that when the man was alive, he used to do one investment program where he gives people millions of naira, those who invested in his businesses?

Now few months before he died, I was listening to a radio program and I heard one of his numerous radio programs where they were advertising his investment program, and one of the presenters was hyping the investment scheme, and he was now talking about the fact that even a lawyer was there on that day and that the lawyer endorsed it and the lawyer spoke on that day.

So immediately I heard what they were saying, I knew something was wrong and I told myself I will never invest in this kind of thing because it's not going to last. And truly as I said, a few months later, the man was assassinated and I doubt if those who invested their money in Oko Oloyun have gotten their money back till today.

If you invested and you got your money back or not, come out and say it. Let the whole world know. All these things were backed by dubious lawyers who use their position to deceive people and to scam people because of the gains they will make into their own pockets. They are wicked people and God will soon expose all evil lawyers in Nigeria and evil people in Nigeria, except you change your ways.

The problem with the Nigerian judiciary is that when the root is spoilt, it will be very difficult for the head to do well. When a child steals meat from his mother's pot of soup and the mother doesn't even know about it. The same child steals money from his father's trousers pocket in the room without his father knowing it. But the father keeps wondering why money is always missing from his pocket. And the mother will also be wondering why the meat in the pot of soup is always missing. Not knowing that the culprit and criminal is within. The insect that eats the leaf lives within the leaf.

The same child goes to secondary school, plays truancy in school and ends up hiring someone to write WAEC and JAMB/UTME for him. He passed the exams in flying colors but obviously someone wrote the exams for him. He gets admitted to the university to study law and he later graduated, went to law school and is now called to the Nigerian Bar to practice as a lawyer and barrister of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. But this guy is a thief of meat in the pot of soup, a thief of his father's money, a thief of WAEC result, a thief of JAMB result, and all other things he has stolen. Yet, he has been called to the bar to practice as a lawyer, to sit in the chambers and collect your money without delivering the service you paid him for, and that's why he is intimidating you and threatening you on top of your money even after scamming you of your money. He is not a lawyer, he is a thief, a criminal and an armed robber that is supposed to face the firing squad in any sane country.

As you read this, please share it to all your friends and family and all over the internet.

My only hope is that soon Nigeria will be liberated from the hands of evil people, including from the hands of evil lawyers. Another thing that makes me glad is that a seasoned, respected and iconic Nigerian lawyer of repute Professor Yemi Osinbajo will be Nigeria's next president after President Muhammadu Buhari. Nothing will stop it. So I'm glad that when Osinbajo takes over from Buhari soon as Nigeria's president, whether Nigerians like it or not, he being a lawyer of repute will weed out these evil lawyers from the judiciary and restore the Nigerian legal system to its glorious days like the days of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, so that the good Nigerian lawyers can rise to restore hope in Nigeria.

And by then Nigeria will know peace from the hands of these evil people that have so much conspired to truncate the glory of God in our land. But Nigeria shall rise once again. Nigeria shall rise in the hands of our anointed president, incoming president Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN). Yes, it shall happen before May 29th 2023 and nothing will stop it. Men are mere mortals and we are pencils in the hands of the Creator.

You can be sure that a Nigerian lawyer will lie to you, will most likely deceive you just to get your money and scam you. A criminal prosecuting another criminal, so what kind of result do you expect from such a case? He will surely lose the case because he will lie to the judge and try to manipulate the judge or try to bribe the judge, so he will lose the case.

OP in as much as you had some bad experience with some lawyers doesn't mean all lawyers are fraudulent and makes all bad. Do you know you can report/petition any lawyer who acted fraudulently towards you and you have evidence of it to the Legal Practitioner Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) and if found guilty can lose his license to practice? Please act accordingly. Thank you and God bless you.

Thanks bro.

Yes I know that not all lawyers are fraudulent, not all are bad. Only the few bad eggs among them are spoiling the image of the profession, just like in every other profession where the bad ones tarnish the image of good ones.

But if we don't start this campaign to correct this thing in Nigeria and this kind of mentality of pride among lawyers where they will collect money from you and feel too big on top of your money to deliver the service, this kind wrong mentality among them will not stop. It will never stop until we stop it through social media awareness campaigns and shaming the bad ones.

Lawyers in Nigeria are too full of pride and arrogance. Most of them. Almost all of them. They will collect your money and still expect you to beg them to do the job you paid them to do. It's very bad. Lawyers in developed countries like US take their jobs more seriously and have human feeling than Nigerian lawyers.

We must puncture this evil pride in lawyers by exposing them so that they can sit up and change.

Let them realise they are not Lords as they think, or that they can do anything to anybody and get away with it because they are lawyers. Enough is enough.

Thank you bro.

I don't know if mine is scam or what again oooo.
I went to magistrate court (Ikeja/ogba magistrate court in Lagos) to get a court order of fund transfer to a wrong account, I met with the security and explained my ordeals to him and he referred me to a barrister inside the court.
The barrister charged me 35k out of the 80k I wrongly transferred.
He told me it's going to take 3weeks to get the court order as it has procedures it will follow before he can get the order.
This was around July, till now, the man said my case is in court 12 that the judge there resigned and left the country and they are waiting for the case to be reassigned to another court.
I don't even know what to do because I don't know if he is telling the truth of how an order he promised 3weeks is/has taking 6months

Drop your comments below. And share it everywhere you can. Share all your experiences of being scammed by a Nigerian lawyer. Enough is enough.

Hmmm, I strongly suspect you may have been scammed by that lawyer.

Pls everybody in the house come and give your advise over this issue.

How can a promise of 3 weeks turn to 6 months, except there is something fishy going on? And to think that you lost 80k, and the lawyer still collected 35k from you without considering the fact that you have already lost 80k, because the 80k is almost lost now until you recover it. So you have now lost a total of 115k or more, plus transport and other expenses.

How can people be this heartless? Heartless and wicked to helpless and defenceless people who are supposed to be helped.

As far as I'm concerned, no court order will take that long. And if it's Court 12 as he told you, there must be evidence that he filed the matter in court in your name and hearing date fixed or given to you by the lawyer, for you to appear in court where the magistrate will most likely interrogate you about your claims to the money, before issuing the court order to the recipient bank to return your money to you. This can be done within one month by a good and genuine lawyer.

If I'm wrong, please everybody in the house correct me. Can a court order for an erroneous transfer take that long? 6 months? No, I doubt. Something is wrong somewhere.

By the way, they played on your naivity. This issue can be handled by yourself even without going to court to obtain a court order, since the money involved is not much. It's not up to millions. It's something you can just approach the recipient bank directly, especially if it's the same bank you're using, complain to the manager, then they will freeze or restrict the recipient's account and get your money returned to you if he/she cannot prove ownership of the money.

But if it's another bank to another bank transfer, it may delay a bit, but you will still get your money if you persist. Or to make it faster, you write the bank and copy the CBN. You will get your money fast.

That's what I think.

Let's wait for others to give their advice/comment over this issue.

Like I always say, you only know you begin a case in litigation. But you can never tell how or when it will end.

The journey is not solely determined by the litigator (lawyer) handling your case. I once did a reversal case that took close to a year for a microfinance bank.

At a point, the bank thought it was my fault that their case wasn't moving. But I asked them to come to court and find out for themselves.

In your case, the magistrate resigned and left the country. How is that the lawyer's fault?

Your case will be reassigned to a new magistrate. And in this election period, anything can happen.

Litigants must understand that the litigator does not have control over the day-to-day administration of the court.

Sometimes, a litigator travels from Lagos to Ibadan or Akure, only to discover the court won't sit that day. And the litigator can't do anything but take another date.

Now, I am using my funds to chase a court order that will activate a global standing instruction(GSI) on the fraudster's BVN while also pursuing other means to enforce the judgment, as it must not be made in vain.

While we got judgment in others but have been unable to enforce it because the fraudsters don't have monies in their bank account, and we do not know their whereabouts to enable us to attach their physical assets.

Some of these cases started in 2021. 2022 is almost over, but the client has been unable to get their money back. Some clients that might have given up will be quick to say that I am a fake and that I scammed them.

I have handled a couple of cases for Nairalanders since I joined Nairaland. Some are high profile, while some are low profile cases.

A couple of them went well even when the client had lost hope and wanted to give up. And some good cases are stalled in court. In some instances, we had to start all over again at the expense of the lawyer.

Now you see why I seldom take small cases. It's not profitable in the long run. And to preserve your integrity as a lawyer, you end up spending your funds.

The only beautiful thing is that a judgment does not expire by the effluxion of time. But clients are not interested in their judgment. They want their monies back, albeit with the interest and ancillaries ordered by the court.

And until this is done, the lawyer has not done anything.

My advice is that before you castigate a lawyer, understand the procedures and possible challenges involved.

Trust you got the gist?

Shalom.

thank you so much for your contribution.
I understand the bank can do something by freezing the person's account but in my own case According to fidelity bank,
The person's account is dormant, does not have a BVN attached to the account and hasn't upgraded the account.
So therefore, my money did not drop in the person's account (it's hanging) and they cannot just reverse it back to me without a court order.
That the person may decide to later use the account, and if he/she realizes that her account was tempered with without his/her consent, if can be a problem for them.

I see. I now understand. So it means you need the court order and without it you won't be able to get the money.

But they say that justice delayed is justice denied. I think that 6 months is too long to get this kind of court order.

Also, it's important to find out if that lawyer is a genuine lawyer, and whether he actually took any action in court to get a court order for you. Because it's possible he's not a genuine lawyer, that is one issue, then another issue is that it's possible he never filed any matter in court on your case.

If he actually took an action for you, there must be evidence. Did he give you any evidence to show he filed your case in court? Did he give you the court papers showing your name and your claims and hearing date and other court information? This is very important and it's your right to have your court papers photocopies given to you and it's also your right to attend the court on the date of hearing except you decide not to.

If he has not given you any court papers at all, and he just told you all these things verbally without any paper evidence, then it's possible he's a fake lawyer and he scammed you, or he may be a genuine lawyer and scammed you. Because even genuine lawyers scam people too, not only the fake ones.

So what you will do is this; if he has not given you any paper, then call him and politely request for an evidence that he filed your matter. If he begins to dodge it and post you and deceive you, then just know he never did anything for you but he just collected your money and scammed you.

Then to be very sure of what is going on and to find out the truth about your case, just go to court 12 by yourself without telling him, since he told you it's in court 12.

When you get there, go to the registry or court office handling court 12. You will climb upstairs and ask of court 12. Meet the admin people and tell them you want to find out if your matter was actually filed in the court. So they will ask you your name, type of case and other details. Then they will help you open their case file. It's a civil matter, in case they ask you. It's not a criminal case. Money recovery/reversal is a civil case. They will open their civil case files and help you check, using your name and date/month (which is from 6 months ago downwards).

If they can't find your case there at all, just know you've been scammed, then call the lawyer, ask to meet with him, go with a male/man with you if possible, then ask for a refund of your money and hold him until he gives you your money because he's a thief.

For collecting 35k out of 80k which he has not even recovered the 80k yet, which he has already collected almost half of the money already, he is a thief if actually he didn't file your case in court.

But if he filed it in court, no problem, then it's not his fault for court delay, but a good lawyer will transfer the case to another court if the magistrate resigned or is not on sit for too long.

That's it.

Let us know how it's going. And provide any other relevant information about your case.

I for one I can publish your story here on Nairaland on different sections and also on other websites and blogs and all over the internet free of charge for you if your story is genuine and if we discover that he actually scammed you of your money.

He will be fished out wherever he is and investigated to know whether he's a genuine lawyer or fake lawyer, and also made to refund your money to you.

Enough of lawyers scamming people.

Enough is enough.

thank you so much for this, and for the 35k I have only given him 20k and I promised to pay him the balance later after the case.
I don't know if the court has closed for the year, because I really want to go as you advised.
I didn't get any paper from him concerning the case.
All he keeps telling me since then is, my case hearing is 2nd of next month, and if I call on that 2nd or 5th, he will say it has been. Adjourn to 18th and from then, the following month till now same story.
