I visited my 120-year-old grandmother and gave her some money when I was leaving and she told me she doesn't need money again.

That she can no longer buy or sell at her age, so I should give the money to the younger ones who need it.

I also have a former governor friend whom I worked with as a greenhorn PA. He was governor from 1999-2007.
Not too long ago, I saw him.

After check-in, he was left seated by the corner of the Murtala Mohammed international airport awaiting his flight.

No one even recognized him again, not even passengers from the State where he was governor, and as I walked up to him and greeted him, then asked if he wanted any assistance, he stretched forth his trembling hands to hold me and simply said,

"Thank you for even recognizing me again. I just want your attention briefly my daughter . Sit down let me ask you something.

How is your Governor doing?"

I also have a retired Major General friend whom I served as a golf caddy at the NDA golf course in Kurmi Mashi, Kaduna.
He was so rich he built a beautiful house he was so proud of.

I visited him too not long ago and wanted us to climb to our favorite spot on his balcony upstairs.

He stared at me with a broad smile and said, "IT, I can't remember the year I went up there. It is lizards and cobwebs and the likes that live there now.

Even the kids, when they come, they don't enjoy my company in the house any more than a few hours and they are gone.

I don't have the limbs to climb up there again and the cost of cleaning keeps getting higher."

I have seen a lot more things.
How yesterday became the day before, how today became yesterday, and how tomorrow became today.

How the past became history, how the present became the past, and how the future became the present.
Nothing ever remains where it is.

Your strength, your muscles, your beauty, your wealth, your guts, your worth, your courage, your talent, your YOU, will progressively diminish until it returns to its source.

The richest man in the world in the 1960s will not be on the payroll of the richest man in the world today!

Even the strongest lion in the jungle will someday become weak, and frail and be eaten by the same predators it once terrorized.

Keep that in mind always and know that no matter how appealing and tempting that thing may seem, our interest in it will diminish with time.

Our strength to consume or own it will vanish with time until everything is surely taken away from us or we are surely taken away from everything!

This is absolutely beautiful, nothing last forever.

Realistically, only few humans are smart, the rest are just ignorant or dumb. The few smarts take life as it is, they realise human only need food, shelter and sex, and they enjoy peace of mind and good health. These particular set of humans are many in advance Western countries.

We are all ignorantly working all our lives for other thinking we are accumulating wealth for future. Your houses, cars, money in accounts are all for others the moment you say goodbye to this wicked world.

I don't blame anyone accumulating wealth because, in this part of the world where there is no single social program for the children and the ages, one need to plan his future very well. This is the secrete of advance countries that dumb Africans fail to realise. Every citizen irrespective of his/her social or financial status much have access to abundance quality food. Children and ages much be well take care of.

It is a simple logic, why would I steal money or accumulate wealth when I know that government will take care of me at old age. Why would I accumulate money for my children when I know government will take care of them till they start working on their own?

This is why I do my best and leave the rest. No need pleasing anybody, just treating everyone equally and fairly. I'll rather risk everything for my integrity and straightforwardness because no matter how weak and frail I grow tomorrow, knowing that I did my best in life will always be good consolation. People tend to forget the man who displeased himself to please them and remember the one that just treated them fairly. This is why we forget our fathers who wore one pair of trousers to see us through schools and adore our our mothers who were barely doing their duties as mothers but not me, nonexisting1, not me.

IyaTola, thank you very much for this piece. I hope the mods would move this to front page cos our youths of nowadays need to ponder on this. Life isn't what most of them think it is. I know Kurmin Maashi very well in Kaduna. I may also know the man you talked about . Down the road, off that express way is Sefa Specialist Hospital in Kaduna, off college road. The owner, Dr Akuse was a highly intelligent doctor. He passed away in 2014. How time flies. Nobody even remembers him again in their association called SOGON, where he used to be very active. I've been to the lengths and breadth of Nigeria, even transversed the Atlantic ocean, down to Indian ocean and the Great Mediterranean sea and I've come to realise one thing, vanity upon vanity, all is vanity.

My mum is almost 90 years old. Very active in her hay days. The moment I read your post, my mind went straight to her and i wished I saw her that very moment. There was a day I first gave her money and she said, please give it to Igede, her maid taking care of her. I asked, but why and she said nothing, that the lady would need it to be buying things for her. My mama wey no dey trust anyone with money .

I hope people would learn from this reality. The Buhari we're talking about today, the politicians who think they own Nigeria, would soon become a passing whim. I boarded same flight as Prof Sagay sometime ago. I looked at this man and remembered how he used to be active in those days. Prof is a good friend of president buhari. He walked a little and sat on a couch at the airport to rest a little, putting his walking stick aside. I greeted him and he just waved his hand...a refined gentleman, full of honesty. I asked a young man recently, what can you tell me about Awolowo. I pointed to his big statue at the Agidingbi junction, off Awolowo way in Ikeja. He said, i learnt he was a popular politician. That was the same man who gave our grand parents the opportunity of passing through western education by making it free. He's been forgotten by many, just like that?

This life is not worth stressing oneself over. I just look at the greedy politicians at times and shake my head. They'd soon be gone and nobody would remember them ever again. Thanks for sharing this.
