The Chairman of Channels Media Group, Mr John Momoh, has cautioned journalists on the need to avoid divisive and offensive rhetoric which could subvert the peace of the country.

According to a statement on Sunday, the media entrepreneur gave the warning while speaking on 'Challenges, prospects and responsibilities,' during the Lagos leg of the two-arm induction of 400 members into the Society of Nigeria Broadcasters in Lagos.

Momoh said, "Irresponsible journalism, rooted in laziness to verify, re-check and triple check facts and figures before going to town with it can inflame a nation. Besides, I want to caution broadcast journalists, especially, to avoid rhetoric that could be divisive and offensive to national unity and therefore, development. Journalists need to be wary of politicians who may want to use them to subvert the peace of the nation."

In his welcome address, the coordinator of the induction Dr Yemisi Bamgbose stated that the society formed would promote professionalism, enhance advocacy and bridge the gap among the retired, retiring and upcoming broadcasters.

He also commended the four-member progenitors of the society and assured them that the solid foundation they laid will be built on.

In his remarks, a member of the pioneers, Yemi Farounbi, lamented that though the population supports the proliferation of broadcast stations, the economy does not support it.

On his part, veteran broadcaster, Vincent Maduka, advised journalists, particularly the broadcast genre, to embrace self-regulation.

Apt for one broadcast station specializing in promoting fake news and unverified information about a Presidential candidate. They yanked news from social media and ran it as a headline in their news without verifying. They apologized and paid the fine for false reporting.

They are also promoting a drug story and certificate matter by inviting a biased soul to discuss the matter without doing verification on their own. They are insisting the candidate must come discuss their controversies with them, instead of unraveling things and presenting facts, thereby leaving the candidate with no option than to respond.

They are too lazy to be doing journalism.

Politicians are now owing media houses, and he who pays the piper should ordinarily dictate the tune.

But then Journalists have the mandate to scrutinize politicians and would-be leaders without necessarily sounding biased, arrogant, angry, condescending, and confrontational.

Just a little balancing here and there, and we will be fine.

Channels try to be neutral but it's obvious they are pro APC the management tho

But the presenters are diverse so I give it to them

A completely natural media is just utopia thinking

How do you guys sleep at night? Why don't you be real here. What's the crime in showing up to address the people you want to lead. Is this asking for too much?
And we think it is ok to project such candidate as a serious person right?
