History Of Oko Irese Community In Kwara state, Nigeria. (Summary History)
Oko-Irese is in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. It is along Omu-aran / Oro-agor Road. It has seven major wards namely: Owaro, Irapa, Iwoye, Idemorun, Odo-oko, Inisan and Odo-aba respectively. It is one of the most primitive ancient towns in the suburbs.
Irese people is an autonomous community within the Igbomina -Yoruba people. It is ruled by its great king, Elese or Oloko of oko land and the present traditional ruler is the Elese of oko, Oba Victor Olawuyi . The oko people were also great farmers, planting mainly garden eggs (Ikan) ,okro (Ila) , and yams. It was from the sale of okro and garden egg that they got the riches which earned them their fame.
Irese people were best known for their excellent works of art. Igba finfin, It was such a predominant occupation of the people that it remains a proverb till this day that:“Even if Onirese refuses to carve patterns on calabashes. The one he had already carved will never perish”, Their women folk were usually very beautiful but they were very jealous and could be very sexy. They could not tolerate sharing their men with a second woman
Oko is regarded as a citadel of learning due to the start of western educations and establishment of school. Especially, Thomas Adewumi University in oko, also one of best college in Nigeria called Thomas nursery and primary school oko, to be mention but few of the social amenities like good electricity, good road link one area to another and so on, that make my home town so unik among other town in kwara state.
