The point is that move from Messi started the proceedings that led to the goal whether ricocheted or not, so it was counted as a plus from him.

When Modric or Iniesta does that, it counts for them as well because the first impression created after that move is that it is a good quality play even before you find out it develops into a goal. That it ends up in a goal after a secondary passage puts more value on it.

Although it may not rank as good as Messi's input vs Switzerland, it's still a positive and counts in the overall contribution from Messi in that tourney.

If I recall, Pendulists were screaming for Robben to win golden ball since there was no outstanding German player, but the same Robben did not score a knockout goal at that World cup with no K.O assist. So why push him forward on a worse basis than that being used to discredit Messi? Fugazi people
