The second term bid of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is being threatened by the continued insistence of the G-5 governor to work against former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Makinde is the only first-term governor among the quintet – Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Samuel Ortom (Benue).

Although Ortom, Ugwuanyi and Ikpeazu are seeking senatorial seats, Makinde’s ambition is the most threatened considering the dynamics of Oyo politics.

The state is controlled by many political gladiators that it is difficult for a single politician to be the major determinant in an election.

Makinde won the 2019 election on the strength of a coalition of gladiators who wanted to oust the then-ruling APC and stop late Abiola Ajimobi from installing a successor.

Despite Makinde’s insistence on not supporting Atiku, some leaders of the PDP in the state, including a former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Wole Oyelese, and a former Minister of State for FCT, Chief Olajumoke Akinjide, have all declared support for Atiku.

An Ibadan-based political affairs commentator, Rasheed Olanrewaju, said if not well-managed, the opposition might take advantage of the crisis in the PDP to take over the state.

“Seyi and his advisers need to think through their actions. It is a dicey situation. If Tinubu wins the presidential election, the momentum might favour APC in the state, especially those PDP leaders working for Atiku who might work against the governor to pay him back.

“If Atiku wins without Seyi’s support, it is also dicey because the APC candidate, Teslim Folarin still enjoys a good relationship with some leaders in the PDP, where he was until 2017. So they can decide to work for him and negotiate his return to the party after the poll, ensuring PDP still controls the state. Some PDP stalwarts are already campaigning for him,” he said.

You forget recent history so easily. Obaseki left APC and still won in the presence of 'strong' Oshiomhole and Tinubu. The massive goodwill that Obi is currently enjoying should have taught Nigerian politicians to take decisions based on conscience and the interest of the masses rather than based on ungodly and self-centered political calculations.

Let the Oyo politicians keep supporting another Fulani to succeed Buhari while Fulani are still sacking whole villages in Ondo, Ogun, and Oyo. The good Makinde should stand with the oppressed Oyo people and he'd never regret it.

Well, i dont understand why he is supporting G5, Wike has nothing to lose but Makinde want to win his relection Bid. Not supporting his Party candidate wil denitely affect his bid. Aja ti o yo ki ba eyi to yo sere(hungry dog does not play with well fed one)

Whatever happens, let those who do not mean well for the citizens be rendered useless in the coming election.

Makinde's second term is non negotiable....he will win by landslide..

A united APC will not stand a chance, not to talk about a divided one of APC, where those that are suppose to work together are now contesting under different political parties.


Like APC in OYO State...Like PDP ( divided into LP, NNPP and G5) at the centre.

It won't affect him. It's a 2 weeks break between both elections. They will campaign with region, he will tell Oyo people they need to support their son( Tinubu) to win the presidency. It will greatly affect Ortom, Okezie and Ugwanyi. Holding elections ( senatorial and presidential) the same day. Abia and Enugu have an igbo man contesting, how will they tell their people to vote a yoruba man over their son(Obi). It will even affect Makinde more if he supports Obi over Tinubu.

Teslim Folarin of Apc can only win Governoship election if he is the only Sole candidate in Oyo state.. Teslim offended many political glaitors in Oyo state. His Jagba ideology will work against him this time
