Just seen this report on the increasing number of uncleared/unauthorised refuse dumping spots in major cities in Anambra. I thought the state gov't had mapped out a plan for regular collection of refuse from residential and business premises, so why have things degenerated to this extent? Is it that other things are now preoccupying the governors time, and even if this is the case, aren't there gov't officials and civil servants charged with ensuring the state is kept clean? So if Soludo doesn't do their job for them by personally going out with shovel and wheelbarrow to evacuate the eyesore, does this mean they can't do the job themselves?

For crying out loud, keeping our cities clean and free of unsightly refuse dumps isn't rocket science! Whoever TF is responsible for this dereliction of duty should be queried immediately and made to sit up or face the prospect of getting sacked!

DR MADUKA IS A SERIOUS CONSIDERATION FOR ALL WELL WISHERS, DAUGHTERS AND SONS OF ANAMBRA STATE IN 2025.

THAT ELECTION WAS BETWEEN HIM AND SOLUDO.

WE MIGHT HAVE TO GO AND GET HIM TO RUN IN THE NEXT ANAMBRA GUBER.

This video has validated the reports I was getting from folks in Onitsha and Awka, The sanitary condition in Onitsha has gone back to the days before Obiano left office( when refuse contractors went on strike)! That strike was a sytemic shock to a well oiled refuse collection system........I knew that for the system to catch up and get back on track will be an uphill struggle! Even the Obiano refuse collection system was at best delicate but it was still manageable! For soludo's system to work properly ,billions will have to be spent by anambra on compactors, bins and personel emoluments etc

The government needs to commoditize/commercialize refuse collection, disposal and recycling, if there is money in it ,then people especially the unemployed may venture into it! Onitsha is a large metropolis, Anambra state has to designate more refuse collation centers within town and dump sites for mass private participation by individuals to work...

My take is that we need to think out of the box to tackle this refuse issue!

The Soludo administration is full of incompetent people including ASWAMA.

Waste management is a MANAGEMENT issue. The state should ask first where is the waste being generated, how much waste and what types before deploying a solution. This is where simple enumeration of residential and business activity in cities is critical so that one can estimate it and price the costs of waste collection and disposal. Every single tenant of a flat or shop should pay a waste fee that aligns with waste they generate.

Once you can price costs of waste collection and disposal then people should pay for generating waste and having it collected for them.

The state needs to also pass the cost of waste to manufacturers of pure water sachets, plastic bags and plastic bottles. Anyone manufacturing drinks in plastic bottles should pay a surcharge per bottle for waste disposal.

Finally, thr state needs to do something about informal hawkers of foods, fruits, vegetables, etc. They congregate on busy roads and dump their waste and go.

We need to hold this government responsible bc they are now complaisant about giving anambrarians a quality state governance like their predecessor in apga has done.

Valid points !! In Woji Town in Port harcourt where my house is,there is no problem at all with refuse collection, the ubiquitous Hausa cart pushers are all over town, they always announce their presence in a loud voice usually early in the morning but the problem is that Port harcourt does not have one single refuse collation center in woji........so the hausa boys dump the refuse into the creek surrounding woji!

Instead of hausa cart pushers why not allow all these youth associations in Obosi,Onitsha etc and members of APGA youth wing apply for different sections of the the metro area and allow them to collect refuse for a designated affordable amount! What equipment do they use? instead of expensive truck compacters, why dont we re engineer the keke to tow waste wagons or build a wagon unto the chassis..............either way we can use Innosson to do the redesign of the keke or get our university engineering faculties to do the work! I am tired of seeing Nigerian engineers/technicians idling away............let us get serious about development and growth! Refuse disposal alone can get thousands of youths busy...................Anambra state can restrict herself to sweeping major roads and streets and clearing drains! More resourced Private refuse contractors can bid for refuse collection work for major markets and industries but the state must establish dozens of refuse collation centers for the system to work!

Awka is becoming unnecessary insecure, dead bodies lying everywhere.

Someone should suggest to Soludo to take decisive actions against this people (cultist)

Yesterday was sorrowful as a rival group came to okpuno awka and start shooting innocent people all in the name of showing off (counting point) eight people gunned down as a retaliation for what they did on 31st night at ifite awka (killing four people)

We have to leave last night to Enugu, I’m going back to portharcourt this morning, someone will not have peace in awka, even my sister staying here are all with us together with his husband. They will be staying with us for sometime before going back to awka.

This is disheartening, I have been having fun here since on 28th, hospitality business is really booming in awka, I pray the governor look into this Cox it might affect hospitality business in awka

There is no Ebubeagu in Anambra state. If there is any attack on Uli/Ihiala , orlu and Orsu boys are responsible. Those guys have swore an oath never to be useful again in their lives.

Uli should rise and secure themselves like others are doing. They should stop playing to the gallery because they are only doing themselves. Fish out those criminals and send those boys back to Imo state.

This is all well and good, but i think it's a bit premature at this point in time. It's better to get the basics in place first.....like adequate, visible and responsive policing, after which CCTV can follow. Currently, mounting them up will present new problems like: vandalism; constant power supply; maintainance; and adequate monitoring of the feed being sent back to the control room.

Assuming officials in the control room see a crime being committed, then what? Would a rapid response unit be mobilised to the scene ASAP or would said officials start shrieking helplessly and aimlessly run around the room like headless chickens? Also, without proper onground policing, what stops criminals from aiming a gun at the camera and shooting it to bits?
Re: Update on developments in Anambra state-photos by investnow2013: 11:23am On Jan 05, 2023
The Cctv in Enugwu Ukwu Town is part of the local/community policing in place. This includes the Enugwu Ukwu Vigilante services ,Anambra Central Vigilante security, security volunteers and the police.
This model should be implemented in the whole state. I know Alor Town are setting up their own.
Other towns like Awka Etiti, Oraukwu,Neni,Agulu,Ozubulu are finalising their plans to set up their Combined security control rooms with CCTV and other monitoring equipment.

Failed Amawbia axis of Awka-Onitsha expressway receiving attention from the state government. Anambra turning to one big construction site
One hopes that Soludo will continue to devise a way of using Direct Labour to address the mammoth challenge of bad roads within the major Anambra cities.
It is obvious that due to how massive the collapse of road infrastructure is within Anambra cities, not even the budget of Lagos State can address the situation by awarding all the roads as "Contracts". Let contracts to construction companies be used for building roads traversing from one part of the state to another. While internal city roads and drainage gutters are purely by DIRECT Labor through a special committee on Anambra internal city roads that reports directly to the governor.

If we learned anything from the administration of Sam Egwu and Umahi in gradually transforming the city of Abakaliki as the best good roads network in the southeast, it is the fact that they both used DIRECT LABOUR to gradually rebuild every street and every gutter in the city. That is the ONLY cost-effective method that can be employed to transform the internal city roads in Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Ekwulobia, etc.

We cannot afford the method of awarding "contracts" for our internal city roads in Anambra state. That is a very expensive and wasteful method which will not address 1% of the problem of bad roads within our major cities.

This is what I have been saying, contracting all and every road rehabilitation will bankrupt Anambra state! Here in the united states, you see Town and county roadworks crew repairing roads especially after the winter, they use basically wagons of asphalt,a small coal tar tanker and simple hand driven steam rollers and compacters...........you do not need multi million naira heavy equipment for such prompt repairs !

Oga Chima,

I'm glad to see some of you are finally bringing up this serious issue. I didn't want to raise this issue because I knew Anambra people themselves should use their tongue to count their teeth.

Truth be told, when I was growing up in Onitsha in the 1980s and 1990s, Abakaliki was the DUST CAPITAL of the world!
Cities like Onitsha, Awka, and Nnewi had decent roads and minimal dust. Today, the reverse is the case!

Rebuilding the internal roads in Anambra's key urban centers must be a key priority. You are right that Soludo won't even scratch the surface of the problem if he hopes to use the easy method of awarding contracts. Direct labor is the solution to reasonably solving this shameful issue. How Abakaliki managed to transform itself from the dust capital of the world to the shining modern city of today must be studied by anyone that wants to develop despite having lean resources.

Yes, Soludo could award contracts to local contractors to hire local labor to do the roads under the supervision of the governor's office.

Re: Update on developments in Anambra state-photos by XerXerz: 12:54am On Jan 06, 2023
Cj, does these pictures actually represent entire cities you mentioned. There's no city in Nigeria that doesn't have its own fair share of bad roads. Delta is a major oil producing state like Akwaibom but one can never place Asaba on the same pedestal with Uyo. Even ikot ekpene is almost overtaking Asaba despite the huge oil revenues. Agreed Anambra has its own fair share of bad roads just like every single state in Nigeria, but the reality is that Soludo is tacking it state wide. By the time he is done, Anambra would have regained it prime position as the state with the best road networks in Nigeria.
