Do you know how much Lagos city and it's people LOSE everyday in world worst commute. Average time spent in your traffic is 4-6hours. That is half a day of work in most cities. I bet some even spend 4hours in morning and another 4 hours in evening to get home. That a whole day of productive work. So imagine generally you're losing half your GDP stuck in traffic. If China was to build toll roads and charge a little money to recoup their investment and make a small profit - you'd be far ahead. You'd spend an hour of commute like everyone else - 30 mins in morning - 30 mins in afternoon max - and use the rest of hours in your business or work - and improve productivity & efficiency of the economy. But Zoo punishes it's citizens with world worst commute - plus world worst electricity supply - the reward - the world worst gdp to revenue at 5.5% or less - despite being top oil producer - and of course now world's poverty capital - with more poor people than India - 1.5b country IGpro1: |

Nope. Most kenyans are now in services thanks to Motor Cycles, Mpesa and such things. I believe post COVID - the service sector has definitely overtaken agriculture - as the kenyan economy undergoes transformation and prepares for a leapfrog. "Almost half of Kenya’s working population is in the service sector amid a shift from agriculture due to declining wages and salaries. A World Bank report shows the share of Kenyans employed in the service sector rose by eight per cent to 42 per cent in the four years to 2019, as jobs in farming stagnated at 47 per cent." “Growth and structural transformation allowed many Kenyans to transition out of agriculture during 2005- 2019, but this transformation has since stalled and remains uneven,” said World Bank in the Country Partnership Framework (CPF) report. “During 2005-2015, the share of employment in agriculture declined from 58 to 47 per cent (from 70 to 45 per cent in the Central region) but then stagnated at 47 per cent during 2016-2019.” https://www.businessdailyafrica.com/bd/economy/better-wages-attract-more-workers-to-the-services-sector--4051674 AfriqueDuZuid: |

The problem was never boarding schools Kenyan parents were just terrible at parenting their kids. The schools were poorly financed and PTA seem like astro physics which was completely removed from their circumstances. What happened to guidance and counseling department? What happened to student unions where students get to express themselves? What happened to Entertainment and sports? A school is not supposed to be a prison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DSDMPv9cSE |

Just30:schooling in kenya must be very terrible and a nightmare experience for any children. Just thank your star you aren't born there. My boarding school experience still remain the best so far in my life . Too much fucking freedom in university. Imagined, doing something illegally and knowing well when caught you will be disciplined yet you still find some crazy moment to do it. You got some alias name based on your characters. I remember one of my mate who took bread and toothpaste toghther when breakfasts wasn't ready on time . Imagine bread and toothpaste.what a sweet boarding life experience. Everyday be drama. Such experience is totally absent from university. |

None of that explain the root cause. Google search "kenya parents lynch teacher for non-performance". TSC acts after parents lynch female teacher over poor results is the 1st results. Kenyans take education seriously - way too seriously - right from primary school - pressure on kids, teachers and school to excel is enormous . The genesis of Kenya boarding schools that starts as early as lower primary was the obsession with passing exams as only way out of poverty. This started in early 1990s as the SAP/Population/Sanctions dried up jobs - for the employed - and it became very tough to get a job. It wasnt until late 1990s that kenyan started to figure out immigration as options - which west africans have. From 1990s - kenya schooling system became cutthroat competition like India and China. Kids can barely sleep. It worse than prisons. In fact, most school disallow games and name it for final year students - kids barely sleep for 5yrs - and they snap. Most kids are taken through that worse than prison school systems from grade 4 - and by high school - they hate schools - by university almost every kenyan kid hates education. University is only time kenya kids are finally free - and the last thing they want to do - is read another book - they now want drink and do all stuff they didnt do growing up. Moi greatest legacy was his laser focus on education - having himself been a teacher - but I think kenya took it too much - now it's in dilemma to totally make education useless (no exams, no pressure, no boarding ) or continue with it's high quality education system that comes at very high cost. The boarding schools and its unrest are directly linked to high education expectations on poor kids - some of who are mentally stunted anyway. Canning is now banned - after many serious assault cases - but during our time - the whipping kids endured. https://workingwiththegrain.com/2018/02/28/better-education-kenyas-history-lesson-for-south-africa/ In the 2007 standardized tests for sixth graders conducted by the Southern (and East?) African Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality (SACMEQ), Kenya’s average score was 557 points – well above South Africa’s average of 495 points, and only marginally below the Western Cape (the top performing province) score of 560 points; at the poorer 25th percentile, Kenya (with a score of 509 points) outperformed the Western Cape (496 points). These results were achieved notwithstanding higher levels of poverty, average per pupil expenditures which were one fifth of South Africa’s, a cadre of teachers who were no better trained, and (when compared with the Western Cape) a relatively messy bureaucracy. Once the socio-economic influences on educational outcomes are taken into account, Kenya’s 2007 (and earlier) outperformance is even more remarkable. South Africa is among the countries below and to the right of the 45 degree line in the figure, which underperformed in SACMEQ relative to their socio-economic characteristics. Countries above and to the left of the line are over-achievers; Kenya stands out in the figure as far and away the most over-achieving of the countries participating in the 2007 SACMEQ assessments. What seems to have made the key difference in Kenya are the ‘softer’ dimensions of governance. Dr. Ben Piper, a seasoned educational specialist, and long-term resident in Nairobi, put it this way: “What one sees in rural Kenya is an expectation for kids to learn and be able to have basic skills….Exam results are far more readily available in Kenya than other countries in the region. The ‘mean scores’ for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and equivalent KCSE at secondary school are posted in every school and over time so that trends can be seen. Head teachers are held accountable for those results to the extent of being paraded around the community if they did well, or literally banned from school and kicked out of the community if they did badly.” The role of the highly-visible KCPE test is striking, but is not the focus of this piece. Rather, my interest here is on the active engagement of communities. |

rvp2018:None of this write up address the concerns raise in this video or the questions I asked. You have an English comprehension problem. The video clearly provides all the answers. I clearly said the obsession with exams not wholesome education is responsible chiefly for schools' unrest and of course boarding system on its own need to be reduced. Kenya has world highest boarding school kids' ratio - and all these unrests are signs of a broken system. All these issues have been studied in length and kanya is now on it's 10th year on the new system that has done away with "final" exam for continuous assessment. The new education system also provides non-academic pathway early for kids who are gifted elsewhere in sports, crafts and leaving only the few who are interested in academic to proceed. The verdict of new system will be known soon - maybe a decade - will kenya end up with happy fools like Ghana or South Africa - or smart happy kids like say in Finland. That to me is biggest challenge...going forward...India/China academic focused versus Finland/Singapore versus South Africa/Ghana - kenya if not carefully could end up in South African/Ghana kind of situation as it shifts from India/China where kids are drilled to study like life depend on it. Ghana situation is slightly better than Nigeria - but as clearly demonstrated in this thread - and in videos of kenyans - who have expressed frustration with holding basic of communication in English & logic - it's a failed system of education. Only those born and educated in diaspora are the shining light in a dark tunnel. Ghana we know came bottom of the bottom of the bottom in PISA test - worse than South Africa. Just30: |

CLASSIC SUFFERING AND SMILLING as sung by Fela Kuti. Normally it the mean score - not individual scores that determine the fate of school principals. Those that exceed - are celebrated, paid money, garlanded. Those that fail to meet the parent expectation - can end up even getting lynched During our time and I think even now - head teachers disappear for few weeks - until parents anger subsidize. Kenya parents are very responsible because they spend more than anyone else in kids education. It's their biggest investment. I wish Nigeria took at least somethings seriously - but we know you're used to SUFFERING AND SMILLING. Kids education is SERIOUS business - but yes because the parents have generally handed teachers the kids and almost half their income - they expect success. Obaaderemi2: |
| Re: Kenyans Are Far Behind Nigerians In Every Aspect – Fani-Kayode by rvp2018: 12:51pm On Jan 01, 2023 |
It a cycle. Parents pay - some at least half their income - to schools. They expect school to perform - and do all it takes. The school expect the kids to perform - and do all it takes. Parents give teacher the pressure - the teachers give student pressure - and poor kids when they cant endure snaps. Just30: |

rvp2018:So you watched the video and you're still typing something contrary to what was said? Why do you like to act daft? You're raising fools in school who come out to be hooligans because their parents failed at parenting them and their parents are also supporting such hooliganism by being hooligans themselves instead of finding out why their children are failing massively in exams during PTA meetings, despite the fact that teachers complete the syllabus. Again you can't seem to address the issues raised in the video or the questions I asked you. All this needless attempt to compare yourself to Ghana or SA or Nigeria education won't help you because students from these various countries are highly sort after globally |

rvp2018:Your kids in Kenya are just not good enough. Stop looking for excuses. Lynching teachers or parading teachers shoulder high are not signs of a society that take education seriously. I've posted results from Kenya of the final year secondary school exams over a five year period here. It's simply egregious, my boy. The problem is that your teachers are poorly trained and the kids are dullards who can't wait to get out of school to go and make some money riding motorcycles. |

Just30:Can you imagine? If you see their final year results, you'll feel sorry for them. Kenyan parents shirk their duties and expect the school to right everything that's wrong with their kids. The parents on their own parts don't know much as is displayed here by many of the kenyans. |

1) It's admirable that failing teachers are punished(lynching is over the board) - I wish Kenyans extended the lynching to politicians. For Nigeria - suffer n smile so more. There has to be consequence to poor results. 2) You can only compare kenya education system with another country. You cannot compare kenya exams with kenya. It's kenyans who set the exams and mark them. Kenya gov decided in 2015 to discourage university education and go for TIVET. Therefore kenyan exams are now pretty tough and there is no normalization or standardization. 3) Trust me if kenya sat that useless WASCE or whatever - they would beat West African by 10 miles. That stupid ROTE learning exams was last seen in kenya maybe in 1980s. Kenya exams are very analytical. Try to find online - compare say WASCE biology paper and kenya form 4 - grade 12 - exams and see the difference. Almost every question is set in a way that require THINKING - not just naming 10 things or twenthy crap. 4) Kenya teachers have been assessed - they scored 99% of the exams the kids for - waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay above any in Africa. Most in Africa - teachers score imagine even 60% of the exams meant for kids. Obaaderemi2: |

Off to the beach but it basically the foundation of what ails Nigeria and many africans. You're used to mediocrity; you're used dry taps; you're used to power cuts; you're used to pretty much everything. Obaaderemi2:students having to go to school at 4.30am and close at 9.30pm just shows how poor Kenyan kids are at education such that despite the sacrifices of teachers by putting in extra hours still turn to yield terrible results. This shows that parents are not involved in their kids education |
