If You Have An Upcoming Interview, Let's Talk by Pojomojo: 8:39pm On Dec 18, 2022 |
I feel embarrassed anytime I sit in an interview and some candidates come ill prepared. I repeat: Treat every interview as a final exam. Read the job description to understand what the employer is looking for. Anticipate the likely questions that may arise from the JD or even your CV. Prepare possible answers to them and practice until you're very conversant with them. It's not often you get opportunity for a job interview and hence you need to invest your all if you so happen to have one. When you don't prepare very well, your responses to the questions will expose you. It can be that embarrassing. For example, someone is coming for an accounts officer role but does not even know then statutory obligations arising from payroll. That's bad! And for me the moment you fail that question, I switch off and whatever you say is COS 90. Let me share these with anyone going for any junior or mid-senior or senior accounting interview this week. They are standard questions that often arise in most accounting interviews: 1. Describe the procedure you will follow in closing the books at the end of the month or year "month-end closing procedures" 2. Walk me through the legal obligations arising from the preparation of payroll. (SSNIT Tier 1& 2 and provident fund, PAYE, date of filing, etc). 3. How would you ensure efficient accounts payable when you are hired? 4. You recorded 1101 sales as 1110. How will you correct this? (correction of errors) 5. Walk me through the 3 main financial statements and the relationship between them? 6. What procedures would you implement to safeguard cash? "Internal control procedures" 7. How will expired goods written off affect the financial statements? 8. Describe your experience with budget preparation and monitoring? 9. We have had problems with debt collection? What procedures do you intend to introduce to safeguard sales and collections? 10. There is currently no filing system in the company. As an accounts officer how do you intend maintaining accurate filing system whiles maintaining confidentiality over critical documents? The above may not be exhaustive but at least knowing them would go a long way to helping you ace that accounting interview. If you have an upcoming job interview, let's talk. I want to help you secure that job. 2 Likes |

Are you aware that the compliance season for 2022 Employers tax return (Form H1) is fast approaching? There is no better time to start preparing than now! As a background, Section 81 of the Nigerian Personal Income Tax Act (PITA) confers the obligation to file Form H1 on all employers. This return is to be filed on or before 31 January following the tax year (2022 tax return would be due by 31 January 2023). Form H1 is expected to be filed with state tax authorities of where employers have their employees resident. As you may be aware, penalty for non compliance is a flat rate of N500,000 and the option to waive this penalty is completely at the discretion of the state tax authority. In preparation for 2022 Form H1 returns, employers are advised to have following things in place at the immediate: - Collate all revenue receipts for PAYE paid on behalf of employees so far. This would be needed for your form G (schedule of payment) - Confirm filing requirements for relevant states - Collate all final payrolls for each of the months. This would be needed at the point of consolidation/reconciliation - Validate all login details for states that requires online filing. States like Lagos, Rivers, Anambra etc have a designated portal where this return would be filed. - Specifically for Lagos state, ensure that 80% individual tax payer ID threshold has been met. It is also important to note that this return is instrumental to processing of employees’ tax clearance certificates, hence the need to ensure that the return is validly filed as may be directed by relevant tax authorities. Feel free to reach out if you require further clarification on the above. |

In as much as I don't think a candidate who can answer all the questions correctly is the best I agree that preparing for interview shows good attitude. I had the rare opportunity of interviewing some accountants and one of them literally had one recurring answer to most of my basic accounting related questions, "I am a fast learner I can learn"...that response can be acceptable from a fresher but for someone with years of experience I was amazed! I want to add that one may not know everything but be very good at the little you know and be confident to talk about it. It could be that little thing that will bring you breakthrough in career. Interview inform of examination may not give you the best person for the job most times... Right attitude and character should be the type of test should in case you truly need the best candidate provided the person have knowledge or familiar with job descriptions. Every other things stated as last examination questions here can be learned. Cheers! |

How can you stay confident during your job interview? Avoid giving long responses to questions except if absolutely necessary. One mistake to steer clear of if you want to answer interview questions confidently: rambling or giving long-winded answers. When interviewers ask a question, they want a clear, direct answer. For example, if they ask, “What can you bring to the company and position?” you should name two to three top skills. Focus on your main strengths. Don’t name 10 different skills. Talking too much can show a lack of confidence and can cost you the job offer in an interview process. So when the employer asks you a tough or complicated interview question, take a deep breath and think about which two to three crucial points to share. In the job interview, confidence beats mastery. |

Preparing for an Interview? Here are some critical information to digest: 1. When interviewing, forget about other candidates and focus on yourself, some "Expos" from asking other candidates the questions asked are completely useless and Detrimental. 2. Interviews are personal, the pattern used in interviewing you may be different from another candidate. 3. Memorising answers could be disadvantageous as it gives no room to think or process further. 4. Communicate clearly - Listen and understand the questions before you answer. Always get clarity and make sure it makes sense before absorbing it. 5. Observe the body language of the interviewer and know when to adjust your answers.. it's always obvious when you ain't in sync with the interviewer. 6. Be original, there's no one way to having a successful interview, do your best and leave the rest! Goodluck! Your thoughts? |

IT’S A NO! NO! NO! - Let’s Stop This Omo, “Nija interview space” has really suffered if i still get comments like “ Thank you for making this one of the most engaging and impactful interviews i have ever had”. Really! what are we subjecting candidates to? I remember another candidate telling me that he has only ever encountered an interview session like this in UK. Really! What’s happening to the recruitment space in Nija? During the course of my career as a Recruiting Specialist, I have always strive to make any interview process engaging and interactive. I try to make it a positive experience even if you are not proceeding beyond my stage. Let’s remember that: The interview process is a mutually respectful process where two partners meet to sell each other to one another. It’s an opportunity for the Recruiter to sell either the organization or his/her client to the candidate while the candidate is trying to market his/her worth. Interview process is not a leader- servant medium of garnering information about the candidate. It’s a medium of exchange of information by BOTH PARTIES. It’s not a FAVOUR to the candidate. The less a candidate knows about you or your client’s, then know that you have also failed in your role to get the right messsge passed across. Just as the candidate has a story that goes beyond their resume, so does the organization have a story that goes beyond the specific job posting. Okay, my question is for Hiring Managers, HRM (quote & unquote) and those unqualified to handle recruitment, how do you ask interview session? Are you that stern and make candidates fidget on their seats? Is your body language so terrifying that some can’t recall what they want to say again? How many times have you offered candidates water, sweets or drinks? Have you purposely set up the interview panel with the most sadistic person that is unmotivated to take part in the interview process? How often do you project your emotions and disappointment with life on candidates? Why make the interview session a grueling and a battle field? Guess what, there is no BADGE or ACCOLADES for the most “stern of faces” during interview. Have you ever seen any award like that in any organization? Make “Interview process” more engaging, interactive and a positive learning experience. If your role involves “interviewing”, then it is your responsibility to ensure that you are selling, “Respectability” to a candidate that decided to grace your presence. Make it respectable and a positive experience. 1 Like |
