benjaminlawson:3.6 trn was what they expected to spend on subsidy in December 2021..back then there was no war in Ukraine, no crisis, no expectation of bad weather. By September 2022, we had spent most of that money thanks to rise in crude oil prices pushing up the cost of petrol and the cost of the diesel used to subsidize it. To put things in perspective...we had spent 2.6 trillion of that money by August due to the above reason. And by November, we had spent more than that.(2022) The weather getting hellish in Spetember and October 2022 added to the costs....plus the high price of diesel. |

So what's the benefits to Nigerians as being one of the largest oil producing countries in the world?, Which safety net are you proposing? And as regards removing subsidy totally that will be practically impossible forget what these contestants are saying make them enter first make we see naso Buhari say no subsidy until e enter e see subsidy by force. If you deregulate 100% nah wahala be that oo Kobonaire234: |

[quote author=pinkasso post=119889772]So what's the benefits to Nigerians as being one of the largest oil producing countries in the world?,Nothing. We should benefit more being an exporter of manufactured goods and earning more income from a higher tax to gdp ratio...than we do producing oil. Only oil producers that benefit are those with populations less than 50m people, and who produce as much as 10m barrels per day. Which safety net are you proposing?A safety net funded by taxes...not one funded by limited oil money. The oil money we have , even before we bring in corruption...is not enough for 200 million people. And as regards removing subsidy totally that will be practically impossible forget what these contestants are saying make them enter first make we see naso Buhari say no subsidy until e enter e see subsidy by force.Well, we would then pay the market price of fuel......at the World Bank and in Beijing. (When prices of oil rise, prices of fuel rise...which bring about rise in subsidy costs...which eat out of the budget...which lead to more loans to cover the resulting deficit) And anyway, I am not in charge of the country. Direct your quesitons to our leaders, or run for office yourself. |

exchange rates affects fuel price and local production of fuel will be cheaper. international price of fuel (95 octane) is around 1.30usd per litre. |

sweerychick:Because the money we use for subsidy is what keeps NNPC from collapsing. It does not let them make a profit. Little explanation NNPC right now imports fuel at N510, and sells it at N140 (Nov 2022). In essence NNPC sells fuel at a loss to the depots to keep the price low. Government then pays part of the subsidy money (the rest goes to transporters to help cover their costs and by extension keep prices uniform across Nigeria in theory)...to NNPC to keep it from going under. The thing is, NNPC is not making a profit ....or enough profit...so there is not enough money to keep refineries running or to pay for new refineries. Whereas without subsidy...fuel would cost N600 and above....but NNPC would make enough money to consider paying for domestic refining. Invoestors will also come in because now they can refine crude in Nigeria...and make a profit doing so. You get? ![]() |

Kobonaire234:Stop buying into that crap that government doesn't have money. What have they been doing with the billions they have been borrowing for the past 7yrs? Serving their interests of cause. Is it not the national assembly that earmarked 30 billion for themselves as severance package? For years now they have deliberately grounded our refineries resorting to importation that would enable them to steal billions through their bogus subsidy. Why is it that none of our refineries have been working for years now? The money usually spent on subsidies every year can fix our refineries many times over but they would never do it. If you tell me they don't have the money to service the needs of ordinary Nigerians I would say its true because they always service themselves as often as needed. |

nesphil:In 1994 it was N5. Compared to that...GEJ was awful Also, by 2013, most petrol stations were not selling at N97 or N87...they were selling at N100-180 tops. Especially if they were independent marketers. Subsidy claims from the GEJ admin were not fully paid off till 2018...and Bubu had to take a large chunk of the budget to do that. Once you understand the nature of the beast called subsidy.... P.S By 2014, 78% of Nigerians were buying petrol above 97 naira per liter. |

It annoys me when I hear people esp government officials claim we have the cheapest fuel...that's insensitive! Firstly, subsidy and importation of PMS is primarily consistent due to the failure of the present and former administration inability to fix 4 refineries and even build new ones as promised! Just a state in USA specifically Texas has a whopping 31 refineries.... Just one state ohh Saudi Arabia started building three refineries in 2016 and completed it in 2021....but this administration used that same 2016 to consistently blame their predecessors and also declare subsidy as nonexistent! Now some of the modular refineries have been completed but cannot access crude oil because the FG want to sell it to them at international price....the same crude that is in abundance in Nigeria and the nnpc wants to sell a raw material gotten from Nigeria at international price Yet they still want the refineries after purchasing at international price, then distill with zero electricity provided, then still sell their finished products at a reduced cost? What then is the difference between the imported products and the local products? Does the nnpc not have provision to sell refineries that domicile in Nigeria at domestic price? Finally, the narrative that Nigeria sells cheaper PMS compared to USA by government officials and so called experts of the petroleum industry is rather unfortunate and preposterous! USA sell a litre at 0.96 dollars and that of Nigeria is 300 with subsidy! The question that should be asked is....what is the purchasing power of a dollar compared to the purchasing power of a naira? Can a Nigerian go to the market or kiosk and purchase a product or commodity at one naira just the same way an american can walk into the same supermarket and get products at one dollar? Let us stop allowing these people deceive us....getting fuel at a cheaper rate is possible! It starts by allowing refineries both public and private to access crude oil at domestic prices! Then provide them with reliable power supply instead of allowing them power their refineries with alternative power source! Let them be given the liberty to fix prices based on the production cost that was incurred in getting the distilled products from the refineries! Price of the commodity will initially be high but sooner, the prices will start going down as competition within the public and private refineries will commence just like what happened in the telecommunications sector! |

The current price of petrol in the world market where EVERYONE buys the commodity is 460 naira per litre. That should also be the price in Nigeria. So any market that sells for less than that is rigged. Which means someone is getting free money by corrupt means. Yes a free market price will cause a lot of suffering. That is how nations become prosperous. Good things are NOT cheap. I don't know why anyone would expect otherwise. But this is Nigerians we're discussing. Everything must be cheap. ![]() |
