Like you did not get my analogy

The bakery is the refinery and the bread is PMS

The cake, biscuits, and puff puff are the other refined products. Cake stands in for diesel and ago.

Now, think on my analogy again.

Plus using yours...NNPC is only bringing in a few products because 1) it is not being given enough flour 2) it was told to sell crumpets, pasts, muffins etc at low prices to help the poor...which meant that it was not profitable to run such production lines. 3.It is selling bread below production cost to help the poor.

Crude oil prices depreciated so Nigeria has to use from the reserve (ECA) for subsidy yet we didn't borrow to fund our budget neither were we borrowing excessively for projects yet we were paying subsidy.
Forward to Buhari administration crude oil prices started increasing yet we could not fund our budget or remit anything to CBN.
The unsubstantial excuse was militant illegal tapering of oil pipes and stealing of Crude oil (bunkering) - Jonathan's administration there was more militants activities than Buhari yet we did not see these propaganda been peddled on Nigeria.
We saw what tompolo unravel which shows that it was a cooperate illegal practice.
We can go on and on but Buhari administration on crude oil dealings has to be seriously probed for whom ever has the capacity to do so.
We are waiting for the excuses after fuel subsidy removal, it will surely come.
Actually, we had chronically low oil prices under Buhari, and high prices under GEJ (I have been following oil prices for a while, so I am not lying )>

But this is not a defence of Buhari. In the face of low oil prices, he should have diversified. Same as GEJ

The fact is, at the end of the day, comparing oil prices under both admins misses the point. Nigeria is not making enough money, and we should have diversified yesterday.

Don't mind this poster either.

His job is to abuse and label anyone that supports the removal of subsidy a liar, because he is being paid by subsidy crooks, stealers, and corrupt government officials and if subsidy goes, so goes his mealticket

He also needs money to buy a new car urgently, and build a mansion in the village, and if subsidy goes, so does his funding for both projects.

He is also been carrying petrol across the border and selling it in Niger at a profit. As a result, he has been able to build two new houses, own a fleet of twenty five sportscars amd twelve private jets, and marry five wives, and send all his kids to good private schools, and also has three side chicks, one of whom was a former Miss World, and another who was the most beautiful woman in South East Asia in 1989 (old is good ).

He also is able to afford five trips abroad, and spends half his time in Dubai where he has his eyes on a prime plot of land there. He is also expanding operations to Northern cameroon

It is such a pity that such a big man feels threatened by lowly old me. Must be the old vapors setting in. You're correct... But the truth is, I cursed those who spearheaded the protest against fuel subsidy under Jonathan regime. By now we would've aligned with the fuel economic factor.

Kobonaire234:
There is only one answer and that is the removal of subsidies totally.

Otherwise there is going to be scarcity whoever is in charge because the price controls inherent in subsides will prevent profits being made which would lead to scarcity

The free money from subsidy leads to corruption and stealing.

The mass smuggling of cheap fuel means we lose billions for nothing. Mass smuggling that both big and small people do

And it is obvious that 50 years of subsidy has resulted in the decline of domestic refining capacity.

Remove subsidy. Let the market control the price. Just like we do for other things

But this apc govt wants to keep believing in the false god called cheap fuel. And they sacrifice our economy and future on its altar

There is Dangote refinery, five other private refineries, plus two NNPC refineries are being renovated.

Plus NNPC spends all its profits making sure fuel is cheap. That is why there is no money for more refineries.

Tor, let us remove the subsidy and use the money for the refinery. But you guys will start shouting poverty!

Because you want cheap fuel...without thinking about the cost that goes into producing it.

Remove subsidy so that you can have enough profit to bring about working refineries...that is how Niger Republic does it.

Yes, because if Dangote refines fuel above N250 and comes to sell it at N40 to people like you, he won't have any profit to keep his refinery running. And it will collapse, and we would be back to importing fuel.
I'm not sure u understand why fuel is been subsidies. If u do, quote me and tell me so we can talk from there.

I do, and it is because we have to 'help poor Nigerians'

I also know that is what you are going to tell me

And in return, the problem with subsidy is when the cost of producing one liter of fuel rises, so does the subsidy cost...which in turn eats a large chunk of our budget.

That leads us to taking more loans.

The problem is, you want cheap fuel. You don't want it otherwise.

Either we pay full market price of fuel, or we pay it at world bank and imf hq. At their terms. You won't want that.

As at November, NNPC was bringing in fuel at 510 naira and selling it to depot at N140, and at it stations at N180

That means NNPC since November has been losing at least N340 for every liter of fuel sold under its auspices.

Selling to black market is how they recoup some of those losses.

The money budgeted for subsidy is not enough to cover the losses...especially since oil prices rose this year.
You keep rugurgitating irrelevant fact thats neglibly related to the subject matter.
Who is Nigeria or Nigerian govt? We are all Nigerians.
Buhari isn't selling his cows to fund subsidy so stop sounding like that's the case. It is the same pool they are looting from to build houses and live large that govt is subsidizing from. If the govt cannot manage subsidy meant to easy businesses and give local Nigerians a competitive edge in global production, they know what Lizy(Elizabeth) Truss did not too long ago in Britain.
Every govt in the world provides some form of subsidy or the other. It may be in form of welfare or intervention funds to industries like semi conductor or auto or clothing industry.
Our major form of govt to citizen intervention and welfare in Nigeria is subsidy. I know what subsidy is and its burden on govt but will not sit back and allow the govt replace subsidy that's impactful to a wider audience be rechannelled into amnesty for killers and free food for almajiris under school feeding trash. If the subsidy is too burdensome, let them readjust pump price to reduce it's burden on govt expenditure.

The fuel currently being subsidized is refined somewhere and sold at open market cost. Nothing stops govt from changing where they buy from and allow Dangote and co sell to them at open market cost. If Dangote over prices his, you go outside to buy. Or are we saying Dangote refinery can't experience glitches and stop working? It sure isn't fault proof and Nigerians shouldn't suffer if that happens.
Your arguments are one sided and leaves any sane person with the impression you are working for some hidden group about to benefit from subsidy removal.

It is you who does not know...

As a parting shot...here is word from an expert as to why we have subsides...

Fuel subsidies have been in place in Nigeria since the 1970s. It began with the government routinely selling petrol to Nigerians at below cost. But most Nigerians were unaware that this was being done.

Fuel subsidies became institutionalised in 1977, following the promulgation of the Price Control Act which made it illegal for some products (including petrol) to be sold above the regulated price. This law was introduced by the General Olusegun Obasanjo regime in order to cushion the effects of the global “Great Inflation” era of the 1970s, caused by a world-wide increase in energy prices.
And wait, there is more...

Why are the subsidies there?
The official reason for introducing oil subsidies was to minimise the impact of rising global oil prices on Nigerians. But other factors played an important role.

The period 1970-1979 was an era of subsidies in Nigeria. Virtually everything in Nigeria was heavily subsidised – education, health, electricity, water supply, air travel and even provisions or “essential commodities” such as milk, sugar, rice, wheat and beverages.

In the 1970s, Nigerians coined the phrase “national cake,” to depict a phenomenon whereby they felt entitled to government largesse.

Subsidies were sustained by the oil boom Nigeria enjoyed, thanks to the oil-shock caused by the Arab-Israeli conflict that saw global oil prices skyrocket.

As part of the subsidy jamboree, public-sector workers received a big boost in their wages in 1975, under the “Udoji awards.” The country’s state-owned National Electric Power Authority did not even bother to collect electricity tariffs, while the national carrier, Nigeria Airways, sold tickets at below market-clearing prices.

But this jamboree was short lived, as the government was unable to sustain subsidies, following steep drops in oil price in the 1980s. The scarcity of foreign exchange made it difficult for the government to finance imports of essential commodities, which led to shortages.

Has the government tried to remove them?
Various administrations have unsuccessfully tried to remove fuel subsidies since the transition to civilian rule in 1979.

President Shehu Shagari’s government – from 1979 to 1983 – increased the price of petrol in 1982, from 15.3 kobo a litre to 20 kobo. This happened without the government making reference to easing subsidies.

Then in 1986 President Ibrahim Babangida announced a partial removal of oil subsidies, which saw petrol price rise from 20 kobo to 39 kobo per litre. This followed his implementation of the Structural Adjustment Program as set out by the International Monetary Fund.

There was a huge uproar against the decision, which reached a crescendo when workers, students and civil society groups embarked on massive demonstrations across the country. Massive and sustained protests against Babangida’s economic policies played a big role in his hurried exit from power. The administrations that followed left subsidies in place.

It wasn’t until 2012 that action was taken again. President Goodluck Jonathan parred down fuel subsides and used the savings to invest in education and infrastructure. But he encountered virulent pushbacks from labour unions, students, and civil society groups. He was subsequently forced to cut the fuel price by 30%.

Last year in June, President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration announced it was eliminating fuel subsidies. It said it had granted approval to the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency to remove the price cap that was in place for petrol.

But by March of this year, the government announced it was keeping the pump price of petrol unchanged despite increasing crude costs. This effectively marked a return to subsidies.

If they can propose amnesty for bandits and some clearly wasteful school feeding, let subsidy be maintained and managed as they are voted in to do.

LOL

It is you who does not want to face the fact that petrol is being sold in Nigeria at a cost less than what it costs to refine it and transport it here.

You don't want to face that fact, so you come here to quote me and to be so obsessed

Anyway, no matter how many times you quote me

1.Our problems start from selling petrol below its production cost.

2.If we cannot pay market price of petrol at your local filling station...we will pay it at IMF HQ, and it will be a perpetual thing.

Be realistic.

Subsidy on petrol does not help the poor in the long term.

Removing subsides is the only way we can make domestic reifning profitable, and get more investment in more refineries...without goverment spending a dime.

fuel is sold below its cost of production in many other nations. Venezuela, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iran.
The US, Taiwan and Chinese govt each are putting combined 300 Billion USD into largely private semiconductor industries to give their own people an edge in life. Govt is a selection from the people to give value back to the people so stop sounding as if the politicians in Africa are doing us a favour. Petrol is common to use all. We fuel our business and private gen sets with it. We move with it. We all eat food planted, cultivated(mechanized) and transported with subsidized petrol.
Why should we discard a welfare scheme with such strong impact and retain questionable ones like school feeding and amnesty to killers?

Who gives a damn about some questionable domestic refining.
You think I cannot figure you out right?

Let me burst your âss for good with a simple question. If you are not an agent of the refiners of petrol, what stops them from refining and selling to other countries same way we are buying from other countries? With this approach, Nigerian govt will favour patronizing them to avoid extra transportation (landing) cost they are currently incurring. But NO, you don't want that but for govt to allow the helpless and hitherto voiceless masses buy from few greedy refiners who can then easily fix prices among themselves to cashout aggressively.
