Not a lawyer but a lot of things cause it
One being if you have a good lawyer he can uncover malpractices by the prosecution or police or unearth hidden evidence which can exonerate the defendant
Two can also give both the lawyer and defendant time to think the case through and maybe strike a deal with the prosecution for a lighter sentence or closure of the case

It is compulsory in a law court. Once you say uou are guilty, the judge will just sentence him directly

I knew it will come to this. I was equaling discussing with someone, sometime back, about this scenario of this man pleading “not guilty”. And of cos, he is not guilty of “murder”.

The State Attorney is very stupid for charging him with only one charge; “murder”. Which obviously the accuse will win this case against him. “Murder” wasn’t the best charge that would have been charged against him, but, “Manslaughter”.

“Murder” are always argued to have been premeditated before it was actualized. The prosecution won’t be able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accuse planned the crime before he actioned it out on the poor lady.

Nigerian judiciary are just some useless sets of idiots. His lawyer obviously saw the loophole and requested he pleaded “not guilty” cos he knew he’ll be able to defend him.

The preferred allegations would have been “1st degree, 2nd degree and perhaps 3rd degree Manslaughter”. This, he wouldn’t have been able to plead “not guilty” to.

Did she make any promise to kill her? Does she know her from Adam? Was he drunk ? Was it an accidental discharge? Did he run away? In this case, an eye for an eye is best.

Sometimes, the long arms of the law is short and karma could be a tortoise, people should reap the consequences of their actions immediately maybe that will reset humanity and some wolves in sheep clothing among us.

Kindly note, I'm not better neither am I righteous but the pain of losing a loved one while you see the killer walking scot free is on another level.

Because law is different from justice.
Under the law, the killing of another person is murder.
But under justice, the killing of another person may not be murder, it maybe manslaughter.
He only pleaded not guilty to murder.

As much as much we are all pained by the incidence. We should still stand for justice.

To me the Issue is Murder. Murder implies it was premediated, deliberate, orchestrated. Manslaughter would have stuck. You killed someone unknowingly without intend to cause harm.
That would have been 3 counts for 3 people as I heard that she had twins. Plus the fact that there were people there, so they could have charged him with 7 other counts of endearing people for illegally discharging his firearms.

So why Government lawyers would hang everything one 1 count is weird.

So the dude didn't intend on killing - so its NOT GUILTY.
The guy has 30+ years with no disciplinary action on file. It will be hard to stick murder .
Then government would have to prove that a fetus is a child or living being. At what age is fetus considered a boy or girl. 1,2 or 3rd trimester. But why 1 count is very strange.

He plead guilty if the prosecutor isn't sure its a slam dunk or for a lesser punishment.

It is good that this guy is being prosecuted. However, I must commend the LASG for prosecuting this guy. I am aware that the State Governments have great roles to play in circumstances like these and this is not the first that the LASG has done this, at least from my observation.

One wonders why other State Governments act as though they are helpless when such unfortunate incidences occur in their domains.

The prosecution is very much in order by charging him for murder. What they have done is to aim at the sky and whatever happens they are sure of landing on the tree. So they went for the crime with the greatest penalty knowing fully well that the least judgement they will get is manslaughter. Lagos State Government has actually won a lot of cases like this. Other state governments are not as active as LASG on issues like this and I wonder why.
