Broadcasting began in Ghana on July 31st, 1935 from a wired relay station opened in Accra. The brain behind the introduction of broadcasting into the country was the then Governor of the Gold Coast,Sir Arnold Hodson, affectionately known as the “Sunshine Governor”.

He was ably assisted by a British radio engineer, Mr. F.A.W. Byron. By 1700GMT on that historic day, gramophone records comprising of martial and light music were relayed and exactly 1745GMT the voice of Sir Arnold Hodson came through to break the tension and the suspense with this explicit message:

The new broadcasting Service was code-named Radio “ZOY”. It was manned by eight technicians and housed in a small Bungalow on 9th Road near the Ridge Police Station in Accra.

Broadcasting first begun in four Ghanaian languages namely Fanti, Twi, Ga, Ewe and later Hausa. Part-time staff were engaged to translate and announce the news in these languages until 1943 when full-time staff were appointed. Between 1946 and 1953, the Organisation was administered by the Public Relation Department, now the Information Services Department.

On the recommendation of a commission set up in 1953, the Gold Coast Broadcasting System (GCBS) was established and from there it became a department in its own right.

On attainment of independence in 1957, the Gold Coast was renamed Ghana and the GCBS became Ghana Broadcasting Service (GBS). The legislation that basically set up GBC as an establishment was National Liberation Council Decree number 226(NLCD226) of 1968....

What is wrong with you? ZOY was a radio station that was established by the British to relay BBC programs in 1939. The Television part was added by nkruma in the 60s.

Just like saying tv started in Nigeria in 1933 because the colonial officers established the Nigerian Broadcasting Service in 1933 which is even older than your ZOY.

As usual, you're used to piece meal information

BBC first started broadcasting tv transmissions in 1926 and by 1929 it was fully running 30 minutes short programs for long periods of the day.

Base of the success to those programs, the British government decided to incorporate BBC in 1936 after recognizing the importance of TV.

Ghana did not incorporate a broadcaster until the 50s though ZOY has been running as a test channel from the 35s.

Was reading somewhere that except for Libya all the North African countries provide the most consistent power supply in Africa men we have a long way to go.

Bro Pokuasi posted the full contents of that link showing it was radio broadcast not TV even at that I dropped a link showing Nigeria started in 1933. The BBC were doing test transmissions not commercial so it's only a limited number of people that would have received those signals.


This is not about dragging who is right or wrong. After all I agreed with you that afrobeat has it's origins in Ghana until new information says otherwise

Exactly. Tanzania is even doing somewhat okay in terms of stability all round at the moment, compared to these four countries you mentioned above.
