Where does it say the meal ticket was given for free??

Show me where it says it.

Na wa for your comprehension.

Most of you don't know your history.

The students were given bundles of vouchers upon registration every semester.

You tear out a bundle when you get to the cafeteria.

Ask Uncle Shola in your family.

Not even in the advanced world are students given free food.

Talk less of doing so half a million people everyday.

It's not everything we cry over.

The OP clearly stated that
"At that time, a full plate of food cost only 25 kobo"

Some interesting stats come to mind:

A. From only 6 universities in 1972, to 170 as at year 2021 (of which 43 are Federal, 79 Private, and 48 State, Universities).

B. Population 1972 = 58.17m; 2021 = 213.40m.

C. GDP (nominal) 1972 = $12.27B; 2021 = $440.8

D. GDP (per capita) 1972 = $209; 2021 = $2,065.75

E. Minimum monthly wage 1972 = N60; 2021 = N30,000

prof2007:

Interesting! And to think that someone actually kept that meal ticket for so long.

Indeed, those were the days of Nigeria's then nascent University system.

In 1972, these were the only 6 universities existing in Nigeria:

1. University of Ibadan (est. 1948).
2. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (est. 1955).
3. University of Ife (now OAU, est. 1961).
4. University of Northern Nigeria (now ABU, est. 1962).
5. University of Lagos (est. 1962).
6. University of Benin (est. 1970).

The next 7 universities were all established in 1975 ie

7. University of Maiduguri.
8. University of Calabar.
9. University of Jos.
10. University of Ilorin.
11. University of Port-Harcourt.
12. University of Sokoto (now Usman Danfodio University).
13. Abdullahi Bayero University College Kano (Now Bayero University Kano).

Lol... you're the one exhibiting recidivism here, not me. You find it difficult to admit that you're commenting based on your background knowledge of an age-long story that university students were given free meals, whereas this thread never implied that or stated such.

The guts you have to argue in the face of glaring evidence is shocking. I no get your time abeg. 🥴

A quick question, were the meal tickets free back then?

A quick question, were the meal tickets free back then?

No, the meal tickets in the University were NOT free.

The University had a cafeteria, and the meal tickets were accepted instead of cash. However, the cost of the tickets was already included in the fees paid at the beginning of the semester.

Each student was then issued with a booklet of the meal tickets.

One of the major advantages of the cafeteria system then was that it ensured every student had access to adequate and nutritious meals all through the semester, regardless of their economic status or financial circumstances.

This is a photograph of a meal ticket for the University of Ibadan student cafeteria, in the year 1972.

At that time, a full plate of food cost only 25 kobo.

The cost of food on that meal ticket was subsidized cost for students by the University of Ibadan. You could only get a full plate of food for that amount at the school canteen. If you went outside the University of Ibadan in 1972, you would get a full plate of food for more than that amount.

They were not free.

They were like meals in a boarding house. You already paid for them as a part of your tuition/school fees.

However, the cost of food was subsidized for students by the University. So, a full plate of food was not 25 kobo in 1972 Nigeria.

This is correct.

The meal tickets were not free, but the 25 kobo price per meal was a subsidized cost. In 1972, a similar plate
of food in a restaurant outside the University would have cost more than that.
