How Tinubu Is Milking And Under-developing Lagos State by Searching03(op): 11:00am On Mar 12, 2023
God-fatherism is a political term that refers to a system in which an influential person, known as a godfather, wields significant control over the political decisions of a region or state. In Nigeria, one of the most prominent examples of god-fatherism is the case of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos State, the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the President elect.

Background
Tinubu became the Governor of Lagos State in 1999, shortly after Nigeria returned to democracy following years of military rule. He served two terms as Governor, during which he made significant strides in infrastructure development, urban renewal, and economic growth. However, towards the end of his second term, Tinubu began to consolidate his power in Lagos by creating a network of loyalists who owed their political careers to him.

Over the years, this network has grown in size and influence, and Tinubu has become the de facto godfather of Lagos politics. His control over the state has been so absolute that he has been able to determine who becomes the Governor of Lagos since he left office in 2007

The Effects of God-fatherism on Lagos

While Tinubu's god-fatherism has helped him maintain political dominance in Lagos, it has had dire consequences for the state's development and welfare.

Here are a few ways in which Tinubu's god-fatherism has been destroying and milking Lagos:

1. Underdevelopment of the state
One of the most significant ways in which Tinubu's god-fatherism has been destroying Lagos is through the underdevelopment of the state. Because Tinubu's loyalists owe their political careers to him, they are more concerned with maintaining his grip on power than with the development of the state. As a result, many critical infrastructure projects have been neglected, leading to poor road networks, inadequate health care, and substandard public schools.

2. Corruption
Tinubu's god-fatherism has also led to widespread corruption in Lagos. Because his loyalists control most of the state's resources, they have been able to siphon off funds meant for development projects and enrich themselves. This has led to a situation where Lagos, one of the wealthiest states in Nigeria, has some of the highest levels of poverty in the country.

3. Lack of Accountability
Another way in which Tinubu's god-fatherism has been destroying Lagos is through the lack of accountability of public officials. Because Tinubu's loyalists control the state's political machinery, they are rarely held accountable for their actions. This has led to a culture of impunity, where public officials are free to engage in corrupt practices without fear of consequences.

4. Politicization of Government Agencies
Tinubu's god-fatherism has also led to the politicization of government agencies in Lagos. Many of the state's agencies and parastatals are staffed by loyalists of Tinubu, who use their positions to enrich themselves and further the interests of their godfather. This has led to a situation where the state's resources are diverted to the benefit of a few individuals, rather than the wider public.

The god-fatherism of Tinubu is destroying and milking Lagos. His control over the state has led to the underdevelopment of critical infrastructure, widespread corruption, lack of accountability, and the politicization of government agencies. If Lagos is to fulfill its potential as a world-class city, then it must break free from the grip of Tinubu's god-fatherism and adopt a more inclusive, transparent, and accountable system.

We have seen how ur people advised Edo to get free from Godfatherism.. Today Edo is regretting. Now they want to be like lagos.. They people who can't put a reasonable Government in southeast is telling lagos where they run to for survival how to put lagos in order. Since you know why don't u apply all u know on development to the southeast and stop receiving insults from North and southwest.. Now I know why Benin people chased ndigbo from benin empire, they might have wanted to take oba from benins nd they had zo send back.. Make ndigbo go develop southeast and let yorubas take care of Lagos.. Stop being covetous.. It doesn't end well

The advantage of eliminating god-fatherism is that. Due to the Governor of Edo's poor performance, he is aware that his time is running out. But if he had been devoted to Oshiomhole, he would have continued to choose successors regardless of what he had done, whether it had been good or bad. When you are enthroned by the people, they have the option to remove you if you disappoint them. With godfatherism, that is not the case.

As an igbo man, I am ashamed of their covetousness.. How can someone without good governance back home be telling people who have run the best state in Nigeria how to do it, instead of even borrowing from them to run southeast.. Infact I think Tinubu should borrow us technocrats to govern east and if u don't see difference in 8years with this mediocre we have had since 1999. Woo I tire for my people oo

I'm more of a Lagosian than he ever will be, if only he knew. God-fatherism is not acceptable to us, the indigenous people of Lagos. How can someone from another state come to claim Lagos, do whatever he feels is appropriate, and enthrone members of other clans? giving himself and his friends control of the state's commonwealth. As long as they are connected to him, he permits members of other tribes to run in Lagos elections as he sees suitable. We are prepared to reclaim our state!

What development are you talking about, despite its population size and economic potential, Lagos has struggled to reach its full potential, this is because of god-fatherism.

Let them leave lagos politics for real lagosians, if they must meddle, then other people living in lagos must meddle too

What is the size of Lagos and what is the population? Again u say no development in lagos, because of Godfatherism... Exactly why GRV is not the answer because upon the economic potential of Anambra obi has nothing to show, and is now the Godfather of GRV. So for us is to still to the small lekki deep seaport, blue and red rail lines, brt etc we are getting than to vote people at tge end of the day we won't have such zo point..

Let me ask u, obi save 75 billion, can 75 billions not introduce brt in Anambra? Does anambra have any wonderful public transit system? Dey play just dey play
