Classic madness. Kenya export food. Kenya import food. It balance out. If every country was to plant their food - that would be moronic. We have comparative advantages in certain areas - like growing tea - we cannot grow cocoa - although some people in kenya consume cocoa.

We cannot grow the 500 food types people eat - FREE TRADE and CAPITALISM - will work the magic.

Gov job is to facilitate trade and capitalism.

Just30:
It will never be cheaper to import any food than to plant it yourself.
One description of communism where countries who couldn't feed themselves.
Communist Kenya will keep being the North Korea of Africa

You can't even feed yourself because you import all the food you need while using your land to grow useless avocado and tea.

If it balanced out, you won't have a trade deficit of 18 billion dollars.

Learn to feed yourself

If trade was free, you wouldn't be needing dollars to buy food for Kenyans to prevent starvation

It rich getting advice from a bankrupt country unable to pay debt until 2037.
There is enough food in high seas - so why would we grow useless things like rice - instead of high value crops like avacados.
Allow capitalism and free trade to decide.
They are way smarter than anyone.
Leave alone a mad cow like you.

If there was enough food, it won't be so much expensive in Kenya.
Grow your own food and your country will immediately cut 6 billion dollars from your import bill.

When your country is spending 6 billion dollars to import food that can be grown in Kenya, you guys are using the land to grow Tea and avocado that you only make you 1.6 billion dollars combined.
Yeah what a smart way to waste time and land.. they must be the smartest people in the world grin🤣😂

Kenyans re so poor when it comes to agro processing industries.
No wonder they keep producing tea with the little fertile land they have for export. Am sure the West were the one who told them to face tea production and ignore other important food product their citizens eat.
No wonder every year the West media will use Kenya stunted citizen as an advert of African poverty on their television and the Kenyans still don't have sense to retrace their steps.
The West bend them willingly as they like.
Thesame dunces will call themselves brave whenever we talking of african country with balls.

Subsaharan:
As I said before Nigeria is not barren ladden Kenya. Nigeria has 34 million hactares of arable land with a mean annual precipitation of
1, 165.0 nm per annum.

She also has a teeming population of >200m and has no business importing rice or any grain for that matter
Nigeria has a comparative advantage in the production of grains such as rice and maize. If only there has been more work and less corruption, rice and maize would have become far less expensive than they are.
Re: Kenyans Are Far Behind Nigerians In Every Aspect – Fani-Kayode by Mkenya2019: 10:06am On Mar 18, 2023
If we remove overcooked Nigeria - kenya is top - and has some least arable land.

If people have money to import food - what problem.
Free floating KES will sort out import/export equilibrium.
Why must you produce rice when there is excess cheap rices produces in Asia.
Why not focus on expensive avocados - kilo of avacados can go as high as 5-10 dollars - kilo of rice as low as 50 cent usd.
Plant avacados - buy cheap rice.

First off.. the KES is not free floated
Imf already told you that.

You must produce rice because it's your staple and you're spending huge forex you don't have to import it.. which is why there's food shortage in your country, you can't afford it.

The money you spend to import rice, no amount of avocado planted in your country can bring you that money.
Re: Kenyans Are Far Behind Nigerians In Every Aspect – Fani-Kayode by Mkenya2019: 10:15am On Mar 18, 2023
It stupid to do this - it worse than useless.

Cost of rice worldwide.

Nigeria self-produce rice at 3.57 dollars a kilo - 4th worst in the world.
Ghana 1.9 dollars
Kenya 1.8 dollars - half Nigeria.
Cheapest - you'll get it for 0.6-0.8 dollars - this 5 times Nigeria!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Based on what? When you're producing rice at 5 times what India or Thailand is doing. You don't have any comparative advantage. You do with palm oil. Concentrate there plus Cocoa.

We can listen to IMF but not a bankrupt country.
We will let farmers decide if it make sense to grow rice or not.
If they can compete with Tanzanian and Uganda farmers - good for them.
If they can compete with Asian farmers great.

Our staple food is 1) Maize 2) Irish Potatoes and 3) Rice. We are not into Jollof like West Africa.

Rice is pretty much a useless food anyways. Maize and Irish potato have some much calorific value.

You do realize that rice is still cheaper in Nigeria than in Kenya right ?

You also realize that if you produce rice, you'll most likely be enriching ordinary Kenyans than enriching the Indians who are responsible for the rice import in Kenya, right ?

Your previous post made sense, you grow tea because u have the climate good enough for it,and you can't grow cocoa because your mate isn't good for it.
But few minutes later u confuse yourself by saying you can't grow rice because is cheap!
In my understanding kenya can't grow rice because u have a dry arid land

Kenyans are free to grow anything they want.
It's market to decide.
If I see there is ready market for rice, and I can produce competitively, why not.
That is the principle.

Rice industry in kenya is simple - Kenya rice grown in irrigation is high quality - then we get cheap Tanzania and Uganda rice - as they come in duty free - then Pakistani rice have preferential deal of 35% duty - then some people import rice with duty at 75%.

Kenya rice farmers therefore have to find space within that economic policy to survive. There are rice coming in from Bangladesh even with that 75% import duty because it's dirty cheap there.

Why would kenya farmer therefore grow dirty cheap rice? They dont. They grow high quality pishori rice that can meet cost of production.
