The first female governor in the history of Nigeria is Virginia Etiaba.


She was the deputy governor under Peter Obi and became Nigeria's first female governor after he was impeached in 2006


Mrs. Etiaba worked as a teacher and headmistress for 35 years in several parts of Anambra state. She retired in 1991 and went on to start the Bennet Etiaba Memorial Schools in Nnewi



Her experience as an educator contributed to the success of the Peter Obi government in Anambra's education sector

She was reluctant in accepting the role of the governor after Peter Obi's impeachment as she was not in support of it.


However, after several meetings with community leaders, she grudgingly accepted the position, which she held for only 3 months.

Although her time in office was brief, she made a lasting impact in Anambra which earned her the nickname "Mama Anambra".



She flagged off several road projects and signed Anambra State’s Child Rights Bill into law. She is said to have invested heavily in the state’s Orient Petroleum company.

Talking about her legacy, she said,“I have always held the belief that if you are kind to history, history will be kind to you. I want to be remembered as a public officer who served responsibly, compassionately & competently. My training and background as a teacher mandates me to show good examples at all times.

Even if it is 5 days governor na governor, obi cut the governor entitlement of Anambra then else she will be getting paid as a former governor till this day just like what ihedioha, Ambode, oyetola will be eating till today .
