ATTACK ON POLICE OPERATIVES: VEHICLE USED BY ASSAILANTS RECOVERED WITH BLOOD STAINS AND BULLET PIERCINGS, AS ENUGU CP ORDERS SUSTAINED MANHUNT AND ARREST OF HOODLUMS

Police Operatives serving in Uwani Police Division of Enugu State Command, while on routine stop and search duty at Osadebe Street, along Campus Gate Road, by Kenyatta Market Enugu, were today, 26/03/2023 at about 11.30am, attacked by armed hoodlums in their numbers and operating in SUVs, who suddenly opened fire on them. Many of the hoodlums escaped with varying degrees of fatal gunshot injuries in the ensuing gun duel, while two of the Operatives, who sustained severe gunshot injuries, were moved to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead and their corpses deposited in the mortuary for preservation.

2. Consequently, manhunt of of the assailants, which was immediately launched, resulted in the miscreants abandoning the black-coloured Mercedes Benz ML 350 4Matic Jeep they used for the operation along Enugu/Port-Harcourt Road, Enugu. The vehicle, riddled with gunshots and blood stains, has been recovered. The recovery of the vehicle and the signs thereof, corroborates preliminary investigation, which suggests that at least two of the hoodlums were neutralized.

3. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ammani, fdc, has ordered Tactical/Operational Operatives of the Command to sustained the ongoing manhunt operation, warning that anything short of fishing out and bringing the assailants to book, to assuage the unfortunate loss of the two Operatives, will not be accepted.

4. The CP, therefore, urges citizens of the State and the general public to assist the Command with useful information that will aid the speedy arrest of the suspects, while calling on them and owners of medical facility in particular, to report any person or persons, dead or alive, sighted with gunshots injuries to the Police.

Gunmen attack police checkpoint, kill two officers

The police is yet to speak on the attack.

Two police officers were, on Sunday, killed when gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Enugu State, south-east Nigeria.

The gunmen, on arrival, were said to have opened fire on the officers who were manning the checkpoint, killing two of them at the spot.

The incident happened at about 11:27 a.m. along Kenyatta Road, near the Main gate of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus in Enugu North Local Government Area of the state.

A witness, who identified herself simply as Mama Chinedu, told PREMIUM TIMES that she and other shop owners ran away during the attack.

“Two policemen were killed by the gunmen. But two other officers escaped with gunshot injuries,” she said.

“We ran away because bullets were flying around here.”

A video clip, apparently recorded shortly after the attack, has been circulating on various WhatsApp groups.

In the clip, seen by PREMIUM TIMES, two bodies of the slain officers were spotted in the area.

While one body was lying along the road, the second body was seen inside a gutter near the scene of the attack.

Passers-by were also seen gathering around the bodies.

The police spokesperson in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, did not respond to calls and a WhatsApp message seeking comments from him about the attack.

Increased attacks

Enugu, like other states in Nigeria’s south-east, has witnessed an increase in deadly attacks lately.

The attacks, mostly targeted at security officials and government facilities, have been attributed to the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) which is agitating for a sovereign state for the Igbo-speaking people in the South-east.

The IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is detained in Abuja where he is standing trial for terrorism.
