So I believe there are handful of us, techphiles here, who are on reddit. And at the moment there's a lot of drama on that platform with some major subs going dark for 48 hrs starting on Monday. Since there are a handful of app developers here, I decided to gauge the pulse of those active on Reddit. What is your take on the drama? Do you feel its warranted? Up until the drama, I had always exclusively used reddit with the official apps. I've previously used Apollo and Slide apps but somehow always went back to the official app. Over the past two weeks I used several other apps, And have ended up liking Apollo and Narwhal and like both. Particularly like the absence of ads on these. Has anyone had a similar experience? Have you considered the alternatives like lemmy, tildes, and postmill?

I've already ported to Lemmy but there aren't many reasonable instances

I've always expected that reddit would do that because any corporation would do what reddit did

I became aware of lemmy in 2021. lemmy.ml specifically.

So with Reddit, I expected that they’d go commercial. But what they are charging for API access is where there seems to be a problem. It comes across like they are charging a lot to force 3PA out and keep access exclusively to their official app where they can absolute control. It’s okay to charge for API access, but I think that charge should be a fair value market price

They say it's too expensive.

Is it something you agree with? Do you use any of the apps to access Reddit?

I use Reddit App directly. I have tried third party app before I didn't like them. As for agreeing with them to be honest it's their platform and they have every right to do what they want with it.

The drama's a bit excessive.

Some/most knew Reddit would try this bs at some point, given the decisions they've been taking before this one but not charging unreasonable amounts for API access.
So if some major subs go dark and never return, still gonna stick around, though not as frequent as I used to, plus I won't be surprised if Reddit "revives" the ones they deem relevant with new mods or someone else creates a new sub to replace it

I was like you until I used the 3PA exclusively for a week. It's a different experience from using the Official app. And dare I say it's a better experience.

So I don't know that "excessive" is the right adjective. It's the speed at which Reddit is planning to implement the changes that people found repulsive. Add to that the fact that the content that Reddit is looking to monetize is user generated. I understand if they charge commercial rates for LLM. But for 3PAs, those rates are atrocious.

Right, but the blackout won't help much. Instead, the better option would be for its users to find some extensions (saw one on r/Apple called sink it) tailored to remove most of the BS Spez is trying to force on its users or browse old reddit for them OGs

So old Reddit is going to be killed off eventually when Reddit goes public. And any web browser extension is going to only be a band-aid. And could also be killed off. Youtube over the weekend mad a move against invidious.io even though they don’t use YouTube’s API. I’ve been messing around with the several alternatives and I’ve started to enjoy the fediverse. Looks like I’d be settling with kbin or lemmy.

I laughed over the cease and desist while listening to some Linux weekly news channel last weekend, didn't know it existed.

And it's not only Reddit and YouTube that's making moves like this, there's Twitch new ad rules and there's Docker who wanted to sunset free plans earlier this year, but reversed the decision as soon as its community revolted and moved all their images out of it.
Overall, looks like their investors and execs wants to see some profits

As for Lemmy, checked it out, gonna take some time getting used to it, but if you know any aside it lemme know. Rather use the less popular ones.

I’ve known of lemmings since last year. Knew of the fediverse when we had twitter banned and came across Mastodon and PixelFed. It mostly used to be an echo chamber and I just had my accounts there so they can be aging. I’ve started using Mastodon a lot more and I like it. I’ve never really liked Twitter when it went pop, but Mastodon reminds me of the very early version of twitter where there aren’t any commercials/ads. You still have trends and all put you don’t have stuff shoved in your face like on Twitter.

For lemmy alternatives, I mentioned one earlier but looks like you glanced over it. It’s kbin.social. I kind of like kbin’s UI over lemmy. kbin is federated and federates with some lemmy instances (lemmy.ml and beehaw I believe). There’s also tildes.net but not sure it’s federated with any of the major others. I might end up sticking with kbin for it’s clean and ascetic UI.

I think this small migration from Reddit will lead to the fediverse becoming more mainstream. In 5 years, I see the Fediverse going global popular

Ah, didn't see it. I'll check them out later in the day

Most of the subs have started shutting down and going private, people are even going as far as deleting all their post and topic.

These people no day take nonsense

Yeah a handful of "technical users" have deleted their post history and accounts. I don't think the subs going private will have any impact though. All the brouhaha will just weed out the "troublesome" users ahead of the IPO
