It's unfortunate everyone now has the space to comment unintelligent talks all in the name of freedom of speech.

ASUU fought that schools should be funded adequately and if that is done, there wouldn't be issues of strike and the rest. You all relegated them and abused them.

Now, tuition fees will be very high. Can the average downtrodden and rank and file of this nation afford #300,000 and above school fees?!

What exactly do you want ASUU to do?

The poor will suffer this development even though it's a very welcomed development to arrest incessant strike. Just know that when school fees skyrocket, don't blame ASUU.
Truly, no where Education is free and cheap technically

Calm down. The schools Nigerians are attending in UK are not subsidized and there is student loans also. Nigerians are paying upto #2million per session in UK.

Meanwhile, the government has made it clear that once you are employed your employer will be paying 10% of your salary every month to clear the loan directly from your salary.

Let ASUU go to strike and allow thunder to strike them back

You get it.
ivolt:
The student loan bill is a scheme by the government to stop sponsoring tertiary education
and end all education subsidy.
Students will access loan at the true value of their school fees.
Which will be at the same level or very close to private schools such as Covenant.
The biggest beneficiary of the bill will be school management who can now independently
determine how much to charge.
The era of cheap tertiary education is over if this bill is fully implemented.

It may also mark the end of national ASUU because ASUU can no longer fight the government
for any policy enacted by their individual university.

Heya!

Abeg, Make ASUU go on strike to protest against the Bill joor since it discriminatory.

Abi, ASUU dey fear ni?
They should please do another 8month without Pay joor. Atleast let them fight for the Rich for once.

ASUU won't fight the Government because of student loan. FG has been planning to introduce student loan for a very long time. FG said they want to increase lecturers salary and introduce student loan but ASUU said no.

Useless union. Always pessimistic and never optimistic. Always want everything done their way yet cannot run university successfully.

It's not ASUU that is running university.

Hmmm the introduction of this student loan means that tuition and accommodation fees will be increased by 100% or more.

By the time the tuition fee goes up. All of us will understand.

ASUU is a very selfish body.

Really? Do know that university lecturers in Nigeria are the least paid in the world? Even polytechnic lecturers earn more than them. I just wonder why the university lecturers don't fight for higher pay.

I strongly believe that there are two core investments a government must do for citizens - Education and Healthcare.

Any shenanigans that gives the government freedom to abandon these two should be resisted.

You're actually smart but not correct. Government spending on tertiary education will certainly reduce but govt totally stopping the funding of tertiary schools will require them to be privatised which is not practicable now. The correct word is autonomy.
haha.
I don't mean zero percent funding as even private universities will benefit from research grants.

The 2 people below are few of the major problems of Nigeria. More importantly, on our educational system going by their counter statements here as usual. They came from a region that are always pessimistic on anything about Nigeria since their bloda lost election. (1) National President, ASUU, Prof. EMMANUEL OSODEKE and (2) National President, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Mr. ANDERSON EZEIBE.

Were other members from other regions blind when these 2 people were contesting for the chairmanship position knowing fully they are too ethnically dented

Is Nigeria the first to grant loan to indigent students?

I believe in other climate something like this is being practiced.

Let's encourage good idea and manage the challenges encounter afterwards.
Employment opportunities are very surplus in other countries,so loans are easy to repay

I thought I was the one who invented the idea of "The Poor" becoming a cause celeb or a Property so that "The Poor" is something less about the actual poor but a weapon exploited by opposition articles. I used the the phrase "the tyranny of the poor" as the collective noun for my concept. Today however I learned that the concept already existed. Below is what ChatGBT outputted when I prompted it.

Tyranny of the Poor

Litmus: Explain tyranny of the poor

ChatGPT: The concept of the "tyranny of the poor" is a term that refers to a hypothetical scenario where a society or government becomes unduly influenced or controlled by the poor or lower socioeconomic classes. It is a counterpoint to the idea of the "tyranny of the wealthy" or the "tyranny of the majority."

The notion of the tyranny of the poor suggests that in certain circumstances, a majority of impoverished individuals could exploit their numerical advantage to enforce policies or decisions that prioritize their immediate needs or interests, potentially at the expense of the larger population or societal well-being as a whole. It implies that the poor, when organized and motivated, can exert significant pressure and influence on government and public policy.

Proponents of this concept argue that the tyranny of the poor can arise when democratic systems are susceptible to populism or demagoguery, where charismatic leaders appeal to the grievances and frustrations of the economically disadvantaged. They claim that such leaders may promise immediate relief and favor policies that provide short-term benefits to the poor, even if these policies are not sustainable or may have negative consequences in the long run.

I fear Nigeria is headed towards a point where you can't breath for fear of disturbing The Poor.

It is a good initiative. Yes, it shows a disparity between the rich and the poor. Truthfully, majority of Nigerians earn less than 500,000 naira per annum. That is a monthly salary 40,000. It will give advantage to students who have to take odd jobs to fund their education, enabling them to focus more in school.

After this, I look forward to the Government remodeling our curriculum. So that our schools can become a problem-solving curriculum. This will enable graduates be integrated directly into the economy after graduating

The other side is Students loan would leave students whom the majority of which are from poor families indebted to the tune of up to 2 million naira at the end of their school, and they have to pay their debts 2 years post graduation. Now the unemployment rate in Nigeria is nearing 50%, which means one in two persons is unemployed. These students had people stand for them as guarantors; defaulting will affect the guarantors. Are you connecting the dots?

oh shut up and read in between the lines! Not everything is political, analyse this as a policy and you might come to the conclusion that this is the first move by the FG to divest itself from subsidising tertiary education
