I am wondering if there were that many Diesel Mercedes Cars in the country however, I am hopeful that I will find an old one with a good drivetrain to harvest.

The M104 engine is quite common. Early model C class (W202) and E class (W124 and W210) use them. I fitted one into my current C126 and it's been awesome.

The diesel engines are rarer but should also be available. Some mercedes mini buses and light pick up trucks use them too.

Yes, the M104 would be my fallback option if I couldn't get a good Diesel one. I am looking to install it in an old school Mercedes.

You are correct, I hear some Sprinter Buses would have them, but I worry that the Gear Ratios of their Transmissions (Automatic) may not be very suitable for smaller vehicle applications. Do correct my understanding if I am mistaken.

Did you get your M104 Engine and Transmission in bits or did you take the complete systems from a running vehicle?

You are spot on with the gear ratio.

I got mine in bits. Engine and matching electrical from the parts dealer. Retained the old transmission that came with the M103 engine. However, I just recently swapped it for a 5 speed manual transmission.

Was your Auto Trans a 4Speed or a 5Speed? What model was it?
Did it require a TCU Electronics?

I may end up going the same route as you did; that is, getting the parts in bits. It would really be great if I could find a complete car with the desired Engine and Auto Trans to avoid many issues. I won't mind the body condition the car would be in as that is irrelevant to what I need.

Mine was 4 speed auto transmission. The early models that takes off in 2nd gear.
