Tragedy struck the Zaki Akpuuna Settlement area of Ukum Local Government area in Benue State today as unknown gunmen unleashed a wave of violence, resulting in the death of no fewer than 20 people. The horrifying incident took place in the early morning hours of July 8, 2023.

According to reports, the unidentified gunmen arrived in the village and began a shooting spree without any resistance or interruption.

So far, authorities have discovered around 20 bodies, with the majority of the victims being young and able-bodied individuals. Sources suggest that the gunmen may belong to a militia group operating in the Shitile area of the state.

The exact motives behind the attack remain unclear at this time. Expressing his dismay over the senseless killings, Hon. Engr. Ezra Nyiyongo, the Member Representing Ukum Constituency at the 10th Benue State House of Assembly, condemned the violence perpetrated against his constituents. In a statement released in response to the incident, he described the killings as extrajudicial and barbaric.

As a representative of the people, Hon. Nyiyongo vowed to fulfill his duty of safeguarding the lives and properties of his constituents. He pledged to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure that the culprits are apprehended and adequate security measures are implemented to prevent similar acts in the future.

The lawmaker also extended an invitation to any aggrieved individuals or communities to engage in dialogue with him, with the aim of preventing the recurrence of such heinous acts.

He concluded his statement by offering heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and urged them to find solace in their faith during this difficult time.

The problem I've got with this Benue is that Armed group are just too much. while you're suspecting Fulani herdsman, you'll be surprised to find out this killing na Dog eating dog matter. Tiv people especially are always fighting everybody. If they're not fighting Jukun at wukari, they're fighting Kuteb and when they're not satisfied they are fighting Idoma or when they feel too idle Tiv shitile will be fighting Tiv aya leaving their collective Enemy.
