The process of Ifá Divination involves a complex system procedure of sifting pine nuts from one hand to the other and based on how many wind up in one hand at a given time, marks are made on a divination board. This is done 8 times and is known as the Odù. The Odù Ifá is the sacred text of the Yoruba religion and within the Odù Ifá there are “16 major divination figures called Odù Ifá, and there are 16 verses associated with each figure, resulting in 256 Odù” or verses. The Ifá priest whether it be a Babalawo or an Iyalawo will interpret the verses that one got from the divination process and tell them what kind of sacrifices need to be made for this person. “Additionally, there are 16 more that related to the 256 verses, which makes for a minimum of 4,096 Odù, and each of those Odù has associated with it 1,680 ẹsẹ Ifá”. This many mathematically calculated probable outcomes, lead to the Yoruba people to believe that there is no situation that Ifá divination cannot solve and truly there isn't..
All this I doubt will make any sense to you cause ofcourse you are not an Ifa priest or diviner or spiritualist and yes!! We all can't be one

Do you need to be initiated to worship and benefit from the Orisa?
To understand the answer to this, one must distinguish between the initiation ceremony and initiation process itself.

1. We must remember that Ifa survived the Maafa era of chattel slavery; if you think any of those enslaved devotees were having to perform expensive initiation ceremonies you are foolish. They had no live chickens, goats, etc to sacrifice (remember they ate chitlings, oxtail, mush, pigfeet, and other undesired parts of animals) nor did they have the time to conduct a seven day straight ritual, so basically it is not about the magnitude of the peocess. The fact that they still managed to maintain the spiritual system shows that the elaborateness of the initiation ceremony was not essential to the system.

They managed to maintain the initiation process without the ceremony because they understood that the ceremony was only SYMBOLIC and did not represent the actual initiation and so while tradition, it was not necessary for orisa practice. The actual initiation is when the devotee INITIATES the act of learning and applying the teachings of itan. That learning must not take place in a $3000 seven day ritual. It is a learning that takes years of commitment, which is the true worship of orisa.

2. People remain attached to the ceremony when their desire to worship orisa is not sincere because they are not interested in a personal journey but in a public demonstration to prove to others that they are devotees. Fake Babalawo's recognize this and exploit their superficial desire for public recognition as a devotee, and so they charge them 200,000 on average per initiation ceremony.

3. Yoruba tradition describes one's initiation process as a marriage (igbeyawo). This is because the best way to think of the orisa initiation process is to compare it to the process of marriage. The real marriage does not take place in a day ceremony that cost 100,000 naira or more. That is just a flamboyant demonstration of the beginning of the marriage that has become a business exploiting on human ego and has little to do with their love for one another. Not only can you be married without such a ceremony, the real marriage does not occur when you put a ring on a finger, the real marriage is made of the years of learning about each other and supporting each other.

Just like a marriage, there is nothing wrong with an expensive ceremony if you are wealthy. But if you are not, it is absurd and counterproductive.

Learn to grow spiritually, mentally and emotionally so you can manage your money in wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

SACRIFICES/ETUTU,

Some people will be asking why EBBO/ETUTU must be taken after consultation rather than just normal incantations that might not cost anything?
Also I have seen in so many post where some post that after thier god father make the EBO/ETUTU, things still remains the same which is obviously because due diligence was not taken during consultation process.
For the former question as to why EBO is necessary, firstly you must realise that Ebo is the prescription that is given within the IFA divination. It is the medicine used to solve problems. Ebo is a combination of materials that symbolically has meaning to a person' situation
and no matter the condition so long the consultation is made and the sacrifice is done in the correct way.. there is nothing that can stop it from working and further more It is not advisable to delay your ebo process especially when the odu has appeared.
